I honestly think we need some form of change to the benefits system but what that change should be and how it should be executed is something I am far and a way unqualified to do, but one thing I think would help is jobs availability that pay a decent wage and access to real job training not some Mickey Mouse "job skill's" course where they tart up yoiur CV for the 10th time and send you on lessons about how to look for work but real skills that get you into a job like proficiency with Office Software to a legitimate standard, and then vocational skills courses in real skill's that will land you a job so if you have a intrest in Building trades you go on a 6 month training course that teams up with building companies who can recruit for jobs from there, etc.
The benefits scheme is a bribe to prevent the lowest rung of society from actively tearing down cushy middle class homes. If benefits were any lower, chavs would be forced to mug people just to get by instead of for fun. Less violent ones commit less violent acts of entropy which cost more to fix than just paying benefits. I'm talking things like stealing copper from your walls and pipes, robbing your shit to be paid a fraction of what it's worth.

You want to ban chavs from buying smokes and alcohol... do you think they'll just happily go without or are they more likely to get "creative" and find loopholes in the system? Niggers sell food stamps for a quarter of what they're worth just so they can buy alcohol - and their innocent families suffer for it. If suddenly the underclass could no longer buy tobacco from the shop then they'll buy it from organised crime, and instead of money going to taxes it goes to people who make society worse.

Since you're a Brit and a Kiwi and we're talking about benefits, I gotta recommend Shannon Matthews the Musical a criminally underrated piss take of a woman who never worked with 7 kids from 6 dads who lied about her kid getting abducted from fame and fortune. They're taking it to the fringe next year.

In the UK we don't have food stamps but I'm always shocked when I see people who are benefit lifers for no other reason than doesn't want to work spending huge sums of money from Budgeting loans on things like TV's and Games consoles or their monthly payout on luxury's first and necessities second or third.

I'm glad we have a social safety net and provisions for people who can't work for various reasons and the number of people outright abuse of the system is negligible in the numbers, but it's still no less grating especially when you see people who have never worked for no good reason living high on the hog when there are direct neighbours who are working full time jobs have a worse lifestyle than they do. I donate to my local food bank when I am able to and I am sure that some of my donations have gone to people who have spent there money on things they don't need like Games etc but there are a lot of people it's gone to help that do need it especially since Covid started as a lot of elderly and single parent families have been made redundant through no fault of there own so I'd rather do something to help than not but when you see a 25 year old chav pot mong drinking Wife beater in the park and a 20 pack of fags rolling a spliff it does make you think twice about continuing to do so.

Sorry for the off topic but it's something I've been thinking about lately with some things that have been in the news, and I am really sorry your in that situation working and starving shouldnt be in the same sentence.
Bruh there's so many people like me. Working to the bone only to have most of it spent on rent, gas (both of which keeps going up), and bills. There's hardly enough for meals so I have to budget very carefully and even then it's barely enough food to get me through to the next paycheck and of course they're not really healthy. Sometimes I can make a pretty healthy meal but that's usually if I have enough money from overtime. But I can't get benefits because I make "too much" for them. Yea our system is fucked. I shouldn't have to bring a poor little bastard into this world to qualify for benefits. It's sadistic.

Hey people either voted Biden or stood by and did nothing as he stole the election. You did your grave you can lay in it.

But best end this here since it's starting to turn the Chris Court case thread into a debate on how unfair welfare and gibs me dats are.

Chris' issues are entirely on Barb. The worst thing you can say about Bob is that he was resistant to getting Chris professional help but thats explainable in 2 ways; Bob was intelligent and he would have observed growing up US mental institutions and he would know they were hell holes before getting shutdown. He likely applied that to all professional mental health facilities. Secondly when Chris was a kid school systems loved to slap learning disabilities on children for federal and state tard bux, with Bob's already previous prejudices it would be easy for him to think Chris would wind up like all those other mental health patients that were released after the government mental health shutdown.
I'm sure he probably grew to regret the decision but by that point he had retirement and barb's mental health to worry about.
I agree with you about Bob's thinking. Problematic children in Bob's time could be sent to nightmarish reform schools. I'm only in my 30s and I remember it was something my mother was afraid would happen to me even though I was pretty well behaved. There was a place in my state called the Dozier School for Boys and it took in boys as young as 3. Survivors have reported abuse, beatings, rape, torture, and murder by staff there. Ground penetrating radar has identified 55 unmarked graves on its premises, though many more deaths were recorded so it's thought they're buried somewhere else. One 13 year old was sent there after trespassing, something Chris is known to do. He was dead 38 days later.

There were reform schools like that in the us and jolly england for years (just read rolahd Dahl's memoirs of childhood) but I doubt they were still a problem by the time Chris was growing up.

Fwiw, Paris Hilton has recently come out with stories of being in an abusive reform school. She’s a year older than Chris.

There are absolutely still reform schools in the US, not just when Chris was growing up, but even today. Some are day schools. others are residential schools; some cater to tards, some to delinquents and juvenile offenders, some to both. They generally get less bad press than they used to (one exception being Dr Phil's residential "rehab ranch", which has been plagued with sexual assault and even murder allegations), but don't let that fool you; they're still shitholes.

If Bob had wanted it, Chris could have been sent to a reform school. Honestly, I don't think it would have done him any good - if anything, I strongly suspect it would have made Chris worse - but reform school was definitely an option.

Here's a partial list of residential facilities in Virginia, and the homepage for one of them.

Yep. Reform schools tend to be somewhere between grimdark daycares focused on warehousing troubled children until they're old enough to be homeless, and actual nightmare factories where bad kids go to get worse. I know some people think that young Chris could have turned out different had he been in a "Sped environment" rather than public school GenPop, and while I totally understand why they might think that, the sad reality is that he probably got the best possible care for himself by staying at home and trying to "mainstream".

Picture all the weirdoes you see on Kiwifarms. All the Horrocows and Pedo Furs and Deathfat Munchies scraping the skin off their own legs. Then imagine that these lolcows are all kids - so lots of hormones, no common sense, and a very poorly developed capacity for impulse control - and they're all stuck in a dormitory or two, 24/7, for anywhere from six months to several years. If they're well-behaved for long enough, then they might get a day pass every other weekend, but usually they're confined to the school grounds. There's a high turnover in staff, and the main job of staff is not so much to tard wrangle, as it is to play tard prison guard and occasionally tackle a kid and put him in four-points restraints. Many of the kids have drug problems, or a criminal record, or they're so retarded they take shits in the communal shower stalls (when they shower at all), and the kids who actually have parents, have probably been assaulted, raped, or shot at by said parents. They learn nothing in school (at most, they'll get a standardized test a few times a year that everyone expects them to fail; rest of the semester they just sit at their desks, swaping tips on self-destructive behavior and/or getting handjobs under the table. Every day, each kid feeding on every other kid's misery.

We all know how crazy lolcows get when they voluntarily spend several hours a day on likeminded Reddit subs, yes? These places are a Reddit sub too, only in this case lolcows are FORCED to be there, and must spend every waking moment trapped in that environment.

Chris was screwed from the start, but I think Bob, for all his failings, really did have Chris' best interests at heart when he tried to give Chris a "normal" upbringing. And to be totally honest? As bad as Chris' life is right now, I can guarantee you that there are thousands of people, his same age, who went through the Virginia reform school system and turned out much. much worse.

Reminds me of the movie trick r treat and the story with at bus of R.e.t.a.r.d.e.d kids that their parents wanted driven off a cliff. It seems sad and cruel at first but then when you realize just how dangerous they are as children and how bad they could potentially get as adults.

Chris wouldn't have lasted a day in a place like that considering he tard raged and squealed like a piggy in the 4th grade so bad they had to hold him down to keep him from hurting himself.

I did not know that about Paris Hilton. I remember she threw a massive shitfit after being arrested so that could make sense. I looked her up on Wikipedia and found that Paris Hilton went to Provo Canyon School. I copy and pasted this from the Wikipedia article:

Since its inception, the school has been subject to a large number of individual and class-action lawsuits, particularly throughout the 1980s and 1990s. These lawsuits ranged from verbal, physical, and sexual abuse and medical negligence, to violating students' First Amendment rights and invasion of privacy, to false imprisonment and battery, to intentional infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy, and loss of parental consortium.

I'm hyped for tomorrow, even though there's a high chance it's another continuance with Chris not even showing up at court. The past two court appearances have been fairly low key, I wonder if this one will attract a bit more attention.

Says a lot about school systems that try to classify children for funding as opposed to identifying issues and working with the child and being able to say "we returned this child to their peer group and they are performing in normal classes."
History teacher here, pedagogy died when standardized testing became a thing. Having schools compete over resources like some bizarre Mad Max: Education Edition is the most cursed model ever.

I know how you feel, it boils my piss when I see some council rat single mum with five kids being interviewed on the news moaning about how it's so difficult just to keep the lights on with her meagre benefits while right behind her her kids are sat on an iPad or playing Xbox on a fucking 50" flat-screen TV in a beautifully furnished home (that they'll probably have wrecked by the time they finally get evicted).

I have never understood why the benefits system isn't heavily restricted to necessities only; it is trivially easy for bad actors to abuse.
I'm torn on this because I agree- but I also think poor people do deserve nice things and shouldn't be harassed for owning them. I grew up dirt poor and was trained on how to make it look like nobody was home when Rent a Center or the landlord came knocking for money. But I did have nice things.

When it comes to SNAP (ebt/food stamps) i'm 100% with you. Nobody should be able to buy anything but nutritional food with SNAP, but i see them time and time again buying luxury foods and soda. It fucking burns me up. I 100% think SNAP should work like WIC, where you get coupons for a certain amount of milk, cheese, rice, pasta, meat, ETC and not just a fucking debit card. Same with rental assistance/stimulus cheques/etc. They should all be for specific things and should've been in a form that could only be spent on specific things.

BUT when it comes to disability insurance, child support, CTC, low-income housing, I think the goal of those programs is helping people live a comfortable and stable life. The goal is that you DO have money to save up and contribute to the economy because you're not spending 99% of it on rent/necessities. People on disability are still allowed to work (very limited hours for very limited income...) for this reason.

Agreed, I'm not suggesting the poor should be forced to roll around in the dirt and dress in potato sacks to prove they're going through hard times, but if you're pleading poverty while also owning a thousand-dollar iPad something's not adding up.

The one that really gets my goat is housing benefit. I used to know a girl who worked the helplines at the benefits office and one day she gets this chick screaming down the phone at her because her bennies came through early, she spent all of it on random shit and now she had no way to pay her rent, and somehow this was the government's problem to fix.

Any benefit that is for a specific purpose --food, rent, clothes, medicine etc-- should either be paid directly to the people who are supposed to receive it, or issued in such a fashion that it can't be spent on anything else, like a check already made out to the landlord or something.

Regarding the IPad, that could've been a gift- it could've been something they saved up for for years, something from the kid's school- etc. Let's be real, the resale value of luxury items (except for maybe purses and shoes) is miserable, and wouldn't actually help these families out of poverty.

And yeah, I get where you're coming from with that phone call. I worked in a grocery store during the height of COVID because I wanted to be a fRoNtLiNe hErO but realistically i just got yelled at constantly for foodstamps/wic that didn't work lmao. It was miserable and totally jaded me. The one that killed me was when a mother came to pick up a wedding cake from our bakery and paid with EBT. That was the moment that broke me.

I also took absolute pride in calling the seafood/deli department every time someone would come up and pay for cold chicken/crab legs/lobster/whatever and nothing else. 99% of the time they would try to walk back and get them heated up/steamed but you're not allowed to use benefits on hot food in the states, so I would squash that shit right there and tape the EBT receipt right to the top of the package. You're already too lazy to work- if you're too lazy to cook too that's not our problem.
