Disaster 8Chan Refugees Blow Their Anonymity - An unofficial new version of the hate-filled forum isn’t as anonymous as its users might hope.

Refugees from the anonymous 8chan forum are flooding into a new censorship-resistant home on the dark web, and inadvertently giving up their anonymity along the way.

A reincarnated version of the hate-filled forum, now linked to three mass shootings, appeared Monday when the original 8chan lost its hosting service. The new site, called 08chan (with a leading zero), has no affiliation with the original and it’s not entirely clear who set it up, but 8chan’s diaspora have been flooding in as word of the site spreads through right-wing social media.

The distinguishing feature of the new site is that it lives on ZeroNet, a peer-to-peer network designed by information activists to allow for uncensorable websites immune from government or corporate intervention. Instead of relying on a central server, a ZeroNet site is hosted in bits and pieces by everyone browsing it, making it virtually impossible to shut down.

“Hard as they try, they will never stop us,” enthused one poster to the white supremacist “/pol/” board on 08chan. “We are smarter and more innovative.”

“The old 8chan site may be ashes, but this is the phoenix egg buried beneath,” another wrote.

There’s just one catch. Peer-to-peer networks expose a user’s internet address to anyone who cares to look. That’s how copyright lawyers catch people trading movies, music and software, and it’s how police and FBI agents arrest pedophiles trading child porn online.

ZeroNet works the same way, a fact that’s been much-discussed on the new site. For that reason, ZeroNet integrates tightly with Tor, an anonymity system that places layers of cut-out addresses between a user and the websites they visit. But only 41 percent of 08chan’s users’ are using Tor, based on our analysis of the peer-to-peer traffic at the site.

Users on 08chan have been complaining that the site is buggy and slow over Tor, and the site’s own administrator initially encouraged anons to just connect directly. “Feel free to post without Tor,” he wrote in a welcome message. “Even as the admin I have no power to identify anyone.”

A Twitter user called “AcidOverlord”, a self-described veteran of the misogynistic gamergate harassment campaign, has taken credit for creating 08chan. He didn’t respond to inquiries for this story and has since deleted his tweets on the subject.

The Daily Beast captured 819 IP addresses for 08chan users connecting from 62 different countries. Most users in our sample, 437 of them, are in the U.S., with Canada (46 users), and the U.K. (37), a distant second and third place. Ordered by states, California, Texas, Washington, and Florida top the list.

Some users connected over VPNs, shielding them from our analysis, but hundreds logged in directly from cable TV broadband networks and other residential services.

Though an IP address alone doesn’t identify the person behind it, it can nonetheless be telling, particularly when a user is running websites or other services off the same IP, as dozens in our sample were. One anon in Georgia runs an open file-sharing server from home. The server’s banner message: “Hitler did nothing wrong.”

So is 08chan any good or is it full of these people that think the jews listen in secretly on their thoughts via 5G before irradiating their testicles? These kinds of people made 8chan unreadable but they might not have the technical skill to get to 08chan.

Also wow, Philippine law enforcement. How do they fit this investigation into their busy schedule of accepting bribes and looking the other way while children are raped?

Who is dumb enough to browse online, especially more controversial sites, without VPN?
Oh about 2 billion people....

Doesn't matter either way. With Five Eyes anyone that visited the old board has had some bong or Aussie spook sift through their entire browsing history, read all their emails and dms etc then pass the information along to the FBI. The CIA responds in kind and does it to their problematic citizens then forwards the information to their governments. Nice little arrangement. Laws prevent you from spying on your people? Get your allies to do it for you, and in return you spy on theirs for them.
You are dead right. Just read the court docs, and you see these references to "cooperating services/countries".
But, if you just look, and don't post, and use a VPN you won't attract attention. Looking is not yet a crime, except with CP.
The zeronet site was definitely a honeypot. And the images posted on it likely had beacons in them and other malware. It may have been the 5E or it could also be crimes who want to rape your computer. Hard to tell.
Problem is that in every 100 visitors to those sorta sites a fair number are journalists/police/intelligence/criminals, supposing there is a real difference.

I really disliked these gosh danged normies. How is this "telling"? Because dumb meme? Or is the "open file-sharing server" the bad part? This entire article is written by someone who does not understand internet for people who do not understand internet.
VPNs are relatively secure, but if some government wanted to, they could just knock on the door of a VPN company and ask for the IP addresses and info of everyone connected.
VPNs are only as trustworthy as the people running them. You have no idea what they are logging or who they are giving informations to. If you are going to trust your safety to a stranger you do not know while they rub their deformed claws together and say "don't worry, goy", you deserve whatever happens.

What do you think about ProtonVPN? I'm thinking about subscribing to a VPN service soon, and Proton seems like one of the best options to start out with. There's even a free option that allows one device at a time. Their mail service seems pretty solid too.

Maybe the Philippines want to see if they can be harnessed as a final solution for the Mohammedian problem.

Even better: does it have /hgg/?

“The old 8chan site may be ashes, but this is the phoenix egg buried beneath,” :optimistic:
Every time this happens the resulting refugees are more autistic than the last.

Works fine for me. I registered multiple free accounts and use them in cascade, one into the other, like a private Tor.
For P2P I put on the end tail another free VPN from another company that lets P2P.

Regardless of where you go or how you protect yourself on the Internet, you are not safe. VPNs are the logical way to go, but they are not 100% secure. Until everyone actively monitoring us fucks off (they won't), it's the toll you pay for wanting to have an Internet.

Also, I fixed the article for journalistic integrity. The Daily Beast should hire me.

Notes from UnclePhil, your new editor-in-chief:

Please refrain from using loaded, opinionated words and phrases such as 'hate filled,' 'misogynistic' and 'white supremacy.'

'Linked to three mass shootings' is a strong claim and confusing to the reader. Even if this is technically true, you have no proof of a casual link other than the alleged criminals having posted there. For the sake of objectivity, I have crossed this out.

I crossed out '(with a leading zero)' as I could not determine whether this was for clarification or a subtle attempt at humor. If the case is the latter, I will remind you that we are reporting the news here, not writing the funny pages.

I also crossed out 'right-wing social media.' The news could be spreading through any caliber of wires, not necessarily from those on the Right.

For the sake of objectivity, I tried to rephrase your sentence about #GamerGate to something like, "The Internet event known as #GamerGate." It then occurred to me that #GamerGate is irrelevant in this case. Your article's subject is 08chan, not #GamerGate.

I crossed out your last two sentences. Your article has a satisfying enough conclusion.

This low amount of quality concerns us. We will be reviewing your transcripts from journalism school and double-checking any claims made on your resume.

See me after work.

I was watching one of the original Law and Orders from I think about 1998 or so - and in the story, a person sending threats and so on was found, via their IP. The plot line was accurate, which means the writers did their research. They also wrote in that the perp was using a proxy (VPNs were not publicly available then to the extent they are now so people used proxies) and Lenny and Co monstered that too. Again, technically correct.
And the governments of the world are a bunch authoritarians (and that's just the nominal democracies) or worse. Literal fascists or commies.

So 8chan is over party when ? @Null
There are so many chans out there...it seems like more chans than in China. But end chan is one place they have gone. And just as jihadis fucked off to telegram a long time ago, so have the extreme right. And to discord. And to Gab's new site. So on. It's impossible to contain this sperging, and it has not occurred to these dumb fuck governments that maybe some of those people going there are sincere in their anger and fears and so on and maybe the governments might want to actually look at the policies that have created all this mess.
I feel really bad when dome fuck goes and shoots up a bunch of people, but you have to try to work out why they are doing it.
The nrxt nig one - and this scares the bejesus out of me - are antifa and the enviros. Unlike most of the right who are dumb fucks, there are a lot of educated people in the left. And already, they are organising: I saw a doco on the telly about a left of center survivalist group. WTF.
I am glad I can retreat to my cabin and watch the whole thing implode.

I'm behind 7 interlaced VPN-Tor connections
How have you done that? I've seen it done with a virtual machine - and two hops. Or two routers....but 7?

I've heard conflicting things about this. Some people say that tor is compromised. Is there any truth to that?

Tor is definitely compromised and there's tons of materials proving how its developers love nothing more than to deepthroat the government cock, but if you're just making fun of autists online and not actively orchestrating nuclear terrorist acts on US soil there's no reason to care.
