Disaster 8Chan Refugees Blow Their Anonymity - An unofficial new version of the hate-filled forum isn’t as anonymous as its users might hope.

Refugees from the anonymous 8chan forum are flooding into a new censorship-resistant home on the dark web, and inadvertently giving up their anonymity along the way.

A reincarnated version of the hate-filled forum, now linked to three mass shootings, appeared Monday when the original 8chan lost its hosting service. The new site, called 08chan (with a leading zero), has no affiliation with the original and it’s not entirely clear who set it up, but 8chan’s diaspora have been flooding in as word of the site spreads through right-wing social media.

The distinguishing feature of the new site is that it lives on ZeroNet, a peer-to-peer network designed by information activists to allow for uncensorable websites immune from government or corporate intervention. Instead of relying on a central server, a ZeroNet site is hosted in bits and pieces by everyone browsing it, making it virtually impossible to shut down.

“Hard as they try, they will never stop us,” enthused one poster to the white supremacist “/pol/” board on 08chan. “We are smarter and more innovative.”

“The old 8chan site may be ashes, but this is the phoenix egg buried beneath,” another wrote.

There’s just one catch. Peer-to-peer networks expose a user’s internet address to anyone who cares to look. That’s how copyright lawyers catch people trading movies, music and software, and it’s how police and FBI agents arrest pedophiles trading child porn online.

ZeroNet works the same way, a fact that’s been much-discussed on the new site. For that reason, ZeroNet integrates tightly with Tor, an anonymity system that places layers of cut-out addresses between a user and the websites they visit. But only 41 percent of 08chan’s users’ are using Tor, based on our analysis of the peer-to-peer traffic at the site.

Users on 08chan have been complaining that the site is buggy and slow over Tor, and the site’s own administrator initially encouraged anons to just connect directly. “Feel free to post without Tor,” he wrote in a welcome message. “Even as the admin I have no power to identify anyone.”

A Twitter user called “AcidOverlord”, a self-described veteran of the misogynistic gamergate harassment campaign, has taken credit for creating 08chan. He didn’t respond to inquiries for this story and has since deleted his tweets on the subject.

The Daily Beast captured 819 IP addresses for 08chan users connecting from 62 different countries. Most users in our sample, 437 of them, are in the U.S., with Canada (46 users), and the U.K. (37), a distant second and third place. Ordered by states, California, Texas, Washington, and Florida top the list.

Some users connected over VPNs, shielding them from our analysis, but hundreds logged in directly from cable TV broadband networks and other residential services.

Though an IP address alone doesn’t identify the person behind it, it can nonetheless be telling, particularly when a user is running websites or other services off the same IP, as dozens in our sample were. One anon in Georgia runs an open file-sharing server from home. The server’s banner message: “Hitler did nothing wrong.”

If someone posted CP on say, Facebook and it just happens to show up on your feed for whatever reason, you'll also end up with a copy of it on your computer for a while. What exactly is the difference?
Seeding webpages on ZeroNet works that if you browse to a site you've never been to before, you'll automatically host their stuff up to a certain limit (default 10MB).
You also have the choice to host everything on the site locally, but what you'll end up with seem to depend on the policy of the owner.

Edit: The timestamps are old because I picked an older version of this site. There's a newer, more active one but this example still stands.

Here's an example from my own local ZeroNet folder, a site that I'm seeding called KopyKate which is a video hosting platform.

Clipboard010.png

Most of this is self-explanatory, but the data directory contains a list of users with their own unique IDs while the data-default hosts the global manifest of the site.

Here's the img folder.
Clipboard0101.png

Even though I'm not opted-in to host this whole site, it's still 44 images on here. Which is kinda what the flaw of ZeroNet is, you can check a site briefly but forget to remove it from your list of sites on the main page in order to not seed them.
You are automatically opt-in to seed on your first visit, whether you want it or not.

It doesn't just work on Linux, even though I have a tor service always running.
My own experience with Linux is limited, my laptop is running Lubuntu since it works better than wondowns 10 fucking up my main. And yeah, the ZeroNet dev made a huge mistake by not ensuring similar user-experience compatibility with anything other than Windows with tor.

You're completely right about that. At the same time, might have been under the assumption that the majority will be under Windows since majority rule or whatever. Still, it's disappointing to learn.

Edit:

This shit seems slow as fuck but will look into it when it's done. Was a bit difficult to find the link, to begin with.

To access 08chan.
1) If you have ZeroNet installed: http://127.0.0.1:43110/1DdPHedr5Tz55EtQWxqvsbEXPdc4uCVi9D/
2) If you don't have ZeroNet installed: Google "Zeronet proxy" and copy-paste 1DdPHedr5Tz55EtQWxqvsbEXPdc4uCVi9D somewhere.

Just remember; Don't fuck up.

I've heard conflicting things about this. Some people say that tor is compromised. Is there any truth to that?
Maybe, but your VPN provider may also be compromised in more way than one. It takes a nation-state actor to gain the possibility of maybe piecing your tor connection together, versus a literal single point of failure who could just be lying about keeping IP logs, and they already probably have your credit card details if you're like 99% of people.

It doesn't just work on Linux, even though I have a tor service always running. I've never heard of any other Tor-using software requiring this level of access: https://zeronet.readthedocs.io/en/latest/faq/#how-to-make-zeronet-work-with-tor-under-linuxmacos

Doesn't matter either way. With Five Eyes anyone that visited the old board has had some bong or Aussie spook sift through their entire browsing history, read all their emails and dms etc then pass the information along to the FBI. The CIA responds in kind and does it to their problematic citizens then forwards the information to their governments. Nice little arrangement. Laws prevent you from spying on your people? Get your allies to do it for you, and in return you spy on theirs for them.

Reconquista of the Anglosphere by Americans when?

They can narrow it down to a person if they get info from the isp so we're all fucked once the masses decide only terrorists would want privacy.

I should also add: If you live in New Zealand and you visit 08chan without a VPN or Tor you're probably already fucked.

Who is dumb enough to browse online, especially more controversial sites, without VPN?

VPNs are relatively secure, but if some government wanted to, they could just knock on the door of a VPN company and ask for the IP addresses and info of everyone connected.

The approaches to deanonymize people on tor are usually too difficult in practice. I know everyone wants to think otherwise, but for most parts, law enforcement either doesn't have the resources or cares enough. Certain three letter agencies also don't really care about random *chan shutins who post "nigger" and their completly new and revolutionary hot takes on jews nobody ever heard of before on an imageboard. They have bigger fish to fry yet, even if these shutins really love to think they're more important than that. VPNs are a lot more attractive because they're big, non-moving targets usually bound to law. These agencies love passive, blanket surveillance that's why any action there is a lot more attractive. VPNs are good if you pirate shit because they have no inclination nor motivation to cooperate with random copyright lawyers. They're also good to hide your IP from some random asshole forum/imageboard admin or other people who have otherwise no legal clout.

That all being said, law enforcement, three letter agencies et al, just like every other government agency are usually filled to the brim with people who got the job because of connections and who know can't easily be fired so they rarely go out of their way to do their job and usually go for the very low hanging fruit that are easy to get at. If you have reasonable opsec I maintain you're very unlikely to get caught doing something illegal because there's a lot of people that don't. So basically, don't be one of those idiots that commit toughtcrime on platforms like facebook with your real name attached to it in countries that have "hate speech" laws, and you're probably golden.

At this point, certain silicon valley corps trying to control the narrative are much more influential and dangerous to internet freedom than any government agency. They're making the tech, they decide what happens and they also provide the government with the tools they'd be otherwise clueless with.

Oh good, they're all from the shit states nobody likes.

Lol this article is dumb. "We know roughly what country these people are posting from!"

Nevertheless intent is what matters, so I look forward to doxings of the idiots behind this.
Wasn't that shit an issue with /pol/ from the get go? I honestly feel like that was an exceptional decision in and of itself.

not my kiwifarms. I love our Errverlord of oopistan. He keeps us safe at night.

8chan is under police investigation in the Philippines

Police in the Philippines are investigating the imageboard 8chan, which has been accused of creating a safe space for far-right mass shooters, according to The Wall Street Journal. The investigation is apparently just beginning and will focus on whether 8chan owner Jim Watkins — who lives in the Philippines — was negligent in his moderation practices. “The first thing we want to know is the influence of 8chan in the Philippines,” chief investigating officer Lt. Col. Elpidio Ramirez told the Journal.
Reuters reported earlier this week that police were investigating 8chan but offered no further details. According to a report in Wired, the Philippines’ National Bureau of Investigation already had an “ongoing” probe into the site and had been contacted by US law enforcement after the 8chan-linked March shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The NBI was allegedly focusing on the proliferation of child pornography on the site. Now, 8chan is in the spotlight again because of a screed apparently posted by the man who killed 22 people in El Paso, Texas, this weekend. The site has gone offline after being dropped by infrastructure providers Cloudflare and Epik. An unofficial version is running through a peer-to-peer network, although users are apparently fearful of accidentally distributing illegal content through it. 8chan’s original creator, Fredrick Brennan — who also moved to the Philippines several years ago — has called for the site to be shut down permanently.

Watkins currently isn’t located in the Philippines, according to officials. He was asked earlier this week to testify before Congress in the US, and he posted a message on 8chan’s Twitter account claiming to be “on my way back to America as we speak.” Watkins responded to the shooting in a YouTube video, claiming that the company “has always worked with law enforcement to help them with their investigations.” He also suggested that the shooter had originally posted the rant on Instagram and not 8chan — a claim Instagram has denied.
The United States has expansive laws protecting freedom of speech, and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act broadly shields sites like 8chan from liability if users post illegal content. But that won’t necessarily protect it elsewhere.
