Horrifyingly enough, when I ran a community called horusgalaxy, this guy reached out and offered to make a dedicated board for us after we got banned from plebbit. One look at the main page was enough to make me run for the hills.
One thing I can say for certain is that certain boards couldn't be deader. /pol/, /tv/, /v/ and /co/ are quite active but /mu/ is a ghost town. Even 5 years ago, the board had what feels like three times as much activity. These days, the same posters make the same threads ad infinitum and nobody discusses anything of note outside genre threads, and even those are flooded with rank shitposts. It seems imageboards are a dying breed.
This is the first time I've been off in 20 years, but yes there use to be happenings, clever people and alternative people and I've even met quite a few friends but honestly it's been worse than ever lately. Discords have killed it, but I ain't in many.
EDIT: 4chan is not just a website it's my personality. Racism, rotting, autism, disrespect and low effort posts. As well as flying into an abusive rage and nothing happening (but everywhere else bans me)
Will just pay I think, it's not like it's going to a shitty corporation, even though still a lot of the entertaining shit is by basement dwellers and they can't pay and might leave so the overall content and quality is still going to be down. The site went down fucking once so we end up with capchellas that are universally hated, overkill. A lot of the regulars in regular topics I visit are missing, not just me, can't believe it's been months without addressing this. Has to be by design to get us to pay right?

4chan's userbase in general seems to be skewing younger than it ever has, currently. It's true of every board. I assume it's a combination of older users heading to Twitter or just aging out of using the Internet, while kids flood in from TikTok and YouTube videos about 'da scary dark web where cool stuff happens'
This wouldn't necessarily be bad for the site, except that zoomers are the brownest generation yet, so by consequence the userbase is also extremely brown.
You can open any board about entertainment and basically whichever thing is most appealing to (brown) children, within the subject matter of that board, is what has the most discussion

It's also visible in the overall culture of the website, which has skewed super left wing in a distinctly "autistic teenager" sort of way. You can open any thread on 4chan today and find kids having meltdowns about how AI is depleting the Earth's water supply, random posts relating orange man or capitalism to the topic at hand, etc. Gives you a window into how unhealthily politically obsessed the average child is in 2026 actually

That business with the SPLC makes me wonder if 4chan is being mismanaged on purpose. It's been on the US elite's radar since that Scientology shit, let alone the Trump memes, 'chan slang going somewhat mainstream, and the vax skepticism.
