I wish, mods will genuinely ban you if you even ask them about it. Too bad there aren't more alternatives to gossip sites than just the farms, even /cow/ is barely hanging on anymore and whenever anything is discussed there it just feels like being in a chatroom of some IBS related half-dead discord server.

8chan is 8kun now and that's dead as shit. 8moe, the closest thing to old 8chan, is just gooner heaven with a half-dead /v/ board and half the site doesn't even speak english anymore. Considering that the site owner for moe tried to legit set up a "legal child porn board" called /hebe/ and kept it up for an alarming amount of time, not to mention that he currently has two boards dedicated to lolicon and one to zoophilia(which includes gooning threads to fucking roadkill) I can see why someone would be turned off from using 8moe today. Even if they weren't and wanted to move on to /v/ there, board owner(Mark Mann, pedophile) made it clear that he doesn't want any increase in traffic and created a separate, even deader board called "/vb/" where "cuckchan posts" get moved. It's harder to be even dumber than 4chan moderation, but Mark tries!

I can't speak for every altchan, but I can tell you that a great deal of them(for example, the webring) was taken down due to retarded infighting and drama, not glowies

I quit around the same time, it just felt too exhausting, too formulaic, as if that place had become a parody of itself. Overnight I went from years of constant, compulsive browsing to zero. Makes me wonder what changed (if it changed much at all!), I keep scratching my head over it.
In the past, I'd have said that jannies got worse and more blatant in their favoritism but they've always been retards working with a broken report system. So I doubt it's that.

4chan is so much of a dead gay literal circlejerk that they regularly lift posts from here in desperate attempts engage bait and boost PPH. Probably the most recent example of this is /a/ getting butthurt about posts from the lolicon/shotacon defenders thread, but I've even seen my own posts about vidya recycled on the 'cuck, back when I still gave enough of a shit to spend five minutes opening a thread and pagedowning through all the fucking porn and not talking about video games.

Since someone else already mentioned the absolute fucking state of Fire Emblem threads, the gore and scat spammer was (and probably still is) the most amusing aspect of those threads and anyone mad about it was (and probably still is is) mad about their multiple necrospam AI goonslop generals being disrupted. There is no worthwhile video game discussion in those threads, and posters in them regularly revealed themselves as running the same routines in Zelda threads, YGO threads, and as associates with Reddit discord jannies.

I've encountered an image with it once, thankfully nothing illegal. It's pretty nefarious as well, since it embeds the data within the file data itself so no EXIF cleaner can affect them nor find them, and to my knowledge no file scanner for it exists.

Here is the source code and a compiled Firefox extension for it if you wish to use it/risk using it/see how it works to figure out how to detect embedded data within images you've saved if you want to give it a shot. The name of the repo and theme shouldn't really surprise you.

Technically you could, but I don't want to reencode every meme I've downloaded to make sure it has nothing nasty hidden in it, where in practice maybe 5 out of 5000 files would be like that. If I reencode JPEG's to PNG's, that's a waste of disk space. If I reencode PNG's to JPEG's, that's a degradation of the original files.

There was an incident where a user from temucin had embedded Archive.ph URLs leading to jailbait in seemingly innocuous images. This is definitely much more common than we'd like to think.

PEE does not embed the text and images into the image, but rather short URL(s) and an identifier. Currently the only host that is supported for said embedded URLs is catbox.moe.
PEE has been "functional" since Oct 2023, the sudden resurgence of both the use and the attention of it has been due to altchan drama and proxy sites creating supported versions that also work on their websites. There hasn't been any sort of breakthrough or new method.

You only need to be careful about saving images from the archives or if you are personally going your way out to request the original lossless image rather than the by default "Cloudflare Polish" version. For regular browsing without the extension or URL tampering (?text at the end of the image URL), the embedded versions of the images simply do not exist for you.

You don't need to take my word for it, feel free to post a regular image on any board, save it and compare the size and hash of the original with the newly downloaded version. After that, compare with archive/?text.

Seeing this reminded me that a while ago I thought of how over half the banners used for the site are so old now most if not all of their context is either missing or can only be found in equally ancient record keeping wiki pages, it reflects just how 4chan never even tried to keep up to spec with the world and now they have a userbase of near-cultureless schizoids and hardline gooners.
