Essentially 4chan seems to be taking the bare minimum approach to get the site back online on its crusty AF ancient shitty sitecode (potentially at the risk of bringing it online with unpatched security issues) rather than using new software, or doing a more comprehensive overhaul of the Yotsuba site software (both for security and making quality of life improvements to make the site easier/more pleasant to use.)

There's an old as fuck apple tree in your garden that is diseased, rotten, got struck by lightning, makes shitty apples, and it just got knocked over by a storm.
Instead of clearing it out, planting a new sapling and waiting for a healthy tree to grow, you prop it up with poles and wire, because getting knocked down was the only problem and once you patch that up there's nothing wrong with it apparently.

It's completely unreasonable to even think anyone could do any kind of overhaul in so little time. Their intention is to just get it back up as quickly as possible. And if they switched to some other open source imageboard software, it wouldn't be 4chan anymore.

I feel like maybe it would work on media style threads like /gif/ where discussion should be low and the media takes priority but I've never really liked multi image posting.

That's actually a compromise I'd be okay with and even encourage. It would satisfy the purists and allow the autists/coomers to media dump using cross-links.
