Because people can't deal with his odor and they'll probably refuse to give him the key for that room and Tommy has to get desperate for a room, so he forced to asked somebody to let him in their room so that he can eat his nasty taco.

I figured it was because he went out there dead broke and then sold just enough gravel for a hotel room and street tacos.

I thought he sold enough street to get the street tacos only. He was probably sleeping in his "friends" car until the friend just decided to bring him into the hotel to stop Tom's pity party

Reminds me of that urban legend about the car for sale, which is suspiciously cheap because someone died in it and the owner can’t get rid of the smell. Except in this case, the smell is shit, ditch weed and failure.
So the only confirmation we have that there was a hotel room at all is that he said so in a comment? Could be a face-saving move and he actually spent the whole night in the car. I pity whoever next opens the glovebox.
