It takes a shit-ton of time for a race/culture to truly "assimilate," and it usually involves mixing in ethnically with the population. When a Mexican moves to America, and has children with another Mexican, they're not birthing Americans, they're birthing Mexicans within America. In order for a Mexican to become an American, they have to copy the Irish in a sense—the ones who did assimilate—which involves changing names, changing religion, and essentially assume a new identity. Your kids can't believe they were anything other than American and that should carry down. This becomes close to impossible if the kid sees they look nothing like their peers (this is where skin colour does matter). As one with that ancestry, red hair and everything, yeah pretty much. Got used for cheap labor like the spics are today in the US, and all that comes with it. Thing is almost none of that exists today. Youll get laughed at for "being Irish", thats just saying you're white here. Now it's just a cool footnote in people's 23 and me test.
The best case scenario is you get a group that no longer sees itself as wholly Mexican nor wholly American i.e. Hispanic-American, African-American*, Irish-American, Italian-American, etc. This mostly occurs when an cultural exclave exists in one place long enough without true assimilation or displacement.
The Irish who moved outside of cultural exclaves within New York, New Jersey, and Boston, essentially melted into the rest of America.
This same premise is how Jews effectively never assimilated despite centuries of having no homeland, which I'm not using as a pivot into hating Jews, just using a common well-known example.
High concentrations of non-native groups will never integrate into the larger whole except through ethnogenesis, but in that case you will see both the native group and non-native group disappear as they create a new, combined people.
*Though African-Americans are unique in that they were a group created via ethnogenesis (think Angles + Saxons = Anglo-Saxon. Norse + French = Norman. Normal + Anglo-Saxon = English) with other Africans (and some Americans) as a cultural exclave. Essentially an orphaned people.
Love is the sole justifier for individual immigration (actual, sincere love). Anything else is apathy/hate for your own i.e. the opposite of love. One of the reasons why the whole "you replaced poles with pakis you deserve everything you get!" line is so stupid. I like poles. My cousin is married to a pole. I still don't want them turning up en masse, driving down wages and displacing my culture, while they export cash to the home country. I'd feel the same way if a million swedes turned up every year.
A Pole who moves away for their own benefit ceases to be a Pole, they're a Polish-speaking immigrant who no longer represents the people they willingly separated from. You can genuinely see the same sort of attitude persist across immigrants regardless of country of origin and country they immigrate to if they're allowed to move in large numbers. You can see it wherever you look, and even see the trend when looking back throughout history.
It should be noted that colonists and the children of colonists do not fit "immigrant" and thus do not betray their people like ordinary immigrants and expats. American colonists did not betray "England" for example as it was a form of tribal migration. Empty land being inhabited was not immigration into a foreign state. George Washington did not betray England as he had effectively been born into a new "tribe" essentially. Him, his father, and grandfather, were all born in Virginia. They might've been ethnically English and shared the language, but his "Nation"/"Tribe" was Virginia. England might as well have been a foreign nation.
