These people operate on blackmail and mutual assured destruction of doing things so deeply immoral that they can destroy each other with the acts it take to be part of their group.
They have no deep loyalty of keeping each other safe, and are as likely to kill each other to tie up loose ends as they are to fake a death. Also considering his age (69), he probably isn't that useful anymore.

Thank you for expressing what I do believe. Another thing I would like to mention is if he was "alive" he wouldn't be so hidden he's the type to want attention.
