Gimme clocks or trashcans, but I just can't wrap my head around how the entire Syrian regime which had been resilient for 13 years, just suddenly collapsed in under 2 weeks after a literal who military force comes out of nowhere and starts fucking shit up. It seemed like things were mostly normal, least in big cities like Aleppo and Damascus. I know I saw pictures of people I'm acquainted with who were vacationing there (for whatever godforsaken reason) in the last year and it all seemed under control. can someone explain literally what happened???

The only things I can really say with some degree of certainty is that the opposition going on the offense seemed to have momentum on their side and exploited it after their initial successes. Assad fleeing probably didn't help matters since when leaders do that their subordinates and soldiers they left behind tend to give up. I've seen "complacency" and "sanctions" brought up for why the Syrian Army was so weak.

Fren, when I was a soldier at Camp Cropper in Mahmudiyah, I slapped post it notes on the faces of Sunni Arab tribals so I could keep them organized before ruining their lives.
I learned a valuable lesson from the second gulf war. Governments are shit, but they can only be shit with the help of the men with guns. Like myself. But I have no regrets because at the end of the day what I did I did for America and it's people. If that isn't what they wanted they should have been more forceful in saying so. Soldiers are weapons wielded by the State. Ask not why they do what they do. Ask instead why they were told to do it.
Assad led a shit government. He was propped up by the Russians as part of their murderous campaign against European and American interests. The soldiers of Russia and Assad committed unspeakable atrocities against humanity and now they are held to account.

Assad was relying heavily on Russia and Iran to stay in power. Russia is bogged down in Ukraine and was forced to disband their PMC group after they tried to pull a coup, and Isreal just finished crippling Hezbollah's leadership, giving Iran a really bloody nose in the process. With those two allies out of the way, Assad effectively had no one to protect him.

It looks like the Syrian government was a house built on sand. Reliant on Iran, Hezbollah and Russia and when it’s patrons were weakened and distracted, the government’s feet were in fact made of clay.
I followed the conflict for a long time you know, just reading and such. I’m honestly amazed the rebels moved so fast.
It does remind me of what happened to Omar Al Bashir, in Sudan. He weathered the storm in 2011 but fell in 2018. Assad lasted longer, but in the end his patrons had more important battles to fight and could no longer save him.
HTS is an Al-Qaeda offshoot. I’m curious how true they’ll be to their PR campaign. Anyways, massive victory for Israel, and Turkey. A strategic blow to Iran.
(If I had to give an explanation, at the end of the day, Assad ran the government on the basis of minority rule-most of Syria is Sunni, and he just couldn’t withstand the pressure arrayed against him).
