Most of the Muslim refugees in the West today are not from Syria but Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. So while many Syrians might be sent home, you'll still have to put up with all the others.

They need no other excuse than Syria still not being safe. Obviously this won't create a peaceful Syria any time soon.

The biggest lie about the asylum system is that we can just send people back who don't deserve asylum. It's a bureaucratic nightmare. After all the investigations and appeals to finally deny someone asylum, you then have to send them away as well. Probably by commercial airplane with someone watching over them. And all this relies on the country also being willing to take them back. This is why we have return deals with many countries to make sure that there is no problem. People might think this is easy, but practically this is all a nightmare, especially if the people sent back are difficult about it.

This is why agreements within EU were made that the first countries people enter is the one they are bound to. It makes it easy for countries like Germany and Sweden to send rapefugees to countries like Italy and Greece, with little bureaucracy and issues. Of course this is just a little band aid on a big gaping wound, but it helps prop up the false statistics that these countries are actually deporting anyone.

TLDR: People aren't going back home unless they want it themselves.

A way around this that many countries do is to offer a lump of money if they return themselves. It's easier and cheaper.

All of this is also why it's important to keep people out in the first place. Turkey is a gateway into EU, so if you quietly make sure Turkey don't let people in, then they can't enter to apply for asylum. Of course this is why the asylum system is completely broken in today's world. Most rapefugees have to illegally enter a western country to apply for asylum, because if they were just allowed in you have trouble getting rid of them if they deserve asylum or not. Of course, you shouldn't deserve asylum when you crossed 7 safe countries to get there either way, but that's another problem.

All of this is why it was fairly safe for Sweden to grant all Syrian asylum seekers who came to Sweden residency. People thought this was crazy, but truth was that not that many syrians had the ability to come to Sweden to apply for this in the first place, so it was mostly virtue signaling. But when the big "refugee crisis" happened it bit them in the arse. Germany said "refugees welcome" and Turkey opened up the flood Gates. Suddenly the rapefugees were allowed to go wherever they wanted, and Germany and Sweden were two main targets because of their retarded policies. This went on till Germany finally said enough and paid off Turkey to turn off the rapefugee tap again.

I think their rationale may be that there's currently no proper government, so their invasion and bombing campaign takes place in a kind of diplomatic void. So if a government forms, they can stop and begin talks.

And also why they occupied more territory. I can understand the rationale of just removing pieces off the table (planes, helicopters, etc) while they can with next to no repercussions. They could be potential thorn in their side but now they can’t be. There could be some loyalists or perhaps Iran has some pilots which could steal some of the craft.

But hey, there's no Russian influence over the German government at all and never has been!
