During the downtime, I received over 300 "Outdated Page" removal requests on search engines. These are the threads. There were often many variations of each, some submitted dozens of pages as well.

300 "Outdated Page" removal requests on search engines

So is that something that happens automatically or did someone(s) take advantage of the situation to try to get themselves de-indexed from search engines? I may be just sleep-deprived but I don't understand why a search engine would need to contact a webmaster about outdated content instead of just recrawling, reindexing, refreshing it themselves automatically?

And since this is a Take That Off the Internet thread, how come random people can tell search engines that someone else's website is "outdated"? Sounds like there would be better ways to grief those over your online footprint (like DMCA tools).
