For my own nostalga. I present Raven

https://youtube.com/watch?v=HkQbPcYGgy4
I've been re-watching it and it still holds up but fuck me Raven himself is bitchy to these kids. It's something I only notice now as an adult. But he would fucking destroy these wee children who just jumped in a freezing scottish lake for a race, dripping with water and clearly shivering and Raven just goes "Hmm, some of you did better than others I see. Disappointing..." If you went on Raven as a kid you have my respect. These kids got fucking battered physically and emotionally.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=fkVXgxHMWdI
Look here. There are moments where Raven is just directly slagging off how useless these kids are to the camera and they just have to act passive like they don't even notice him whilst he lists all their many failings for all the nation's kids to see.
Holy shit I forgot that existed, don't remember watching it but what I did see must have made enough of an impression for me to remember it's existence. Might put it in watch later

Ok, maybe a quarter of a century off or whatnot, but still...

When You Must Be Joking was broadcast in 1975 Corporal punishment was still permitted and commonly used in British schools. Children were often cruelly and sadistically beaten and some were severely traumatised by the practice.

It could be argued that the barbarous practice was a magnet to attract sadistic paedophiles into the teaching profession, just the sort of people who should not be there and driving away the good teachers who got no pleasure from inflicting pain on children, people like Jim Bowen, who had been a deputy Headmaster.

Jim explains the rules, such as they were in 1975, though even then they were often broken by the teachers for their own benefit. And a very young Sylvestra Le Touzel, looking uncannily like Margaret Thatcher, sings the sarcastic Leon Rosselson song "I am a Tory Lady sir" in praise of hanging criminals and beating children.

Flintlock provides the music. To be fair to Margaret Thatcher it was in 1987 under her Premiership that the barbarous practice was finally abolished in State funded schools, against strong opposition from the Labour party under pressure from the Teachers Unions.

Sorry, couldn't find anywhere else to drop this. And you need to see this!

Now the school system has gone completely the other way with the kids beating the teachers and worse

Lots of great programmes mentioned in this thread, almost none of which would get made now, sadly. On that note, remember Banzai?

BTW there's penis in this episode that somehow escaped the YouTube censors

Apparently even back then there was a bit of pushback when it was shown in America, with them being more sensitive in regards to Japanese stereotypes. If it aired today, it'd make people's heads explode.

Pretty underrated comedy from the 2000’s, in my opinion.

Also, no mention of 2002’s Top Gun?

Never understood the appeal, basically every episode has the exact same plot. I couldn't understand why people kept raving about it.
its Skins for 'cels
To me Skins from what I seen didnt sexualize or ow the edge teens nearly as much as foreign stuff does. Look at american and french shit like Euphoria and Cuties, or lolicon people. I still think Inbetweeners got it the best tho. Even the attractive actors are made to look plain and unfuckable
you forget how far we came since the 2000s, gays were still barely tolerated, anal sex in general was seen as taboo as tranny sex today. when skins came out, the US just put a guy in federal prison because he made a porno where he pretended to fuck a woman that pretended to be his stepdaughter.

Like i said extras was pretty good, Smerch and Rick are a great duo who havent done anything as good separately since. However i feel Extras suffered a bit from Ricky playing a character that he spoke vicariously thru. I still see Andy as a more meek and submissive character than what Ricky plays now, so its not as bad as After Life but it still includes a tiny bit of fart sniffing

However it gave us “ive seen everything ive seen it all”, robert deniro taking a nude pen and the “little fat man” song so all is forgiven

This far and no mention of League of Gentlemen?!?!

Tea then?

Although I didn't notice it back then, the laugh track is fucking grating.

Trigger Happy TV
From absolute chaotic lunacy

To slightly more subtlety.

Knightmare (1987-1994)

Probably the best kids TV game show to exist, at least in bongland. I wouldn't be surprised if a ton of kids got into D&D because of this show.

God, Knightmare really activates my almonds in a good way. It was before my time but I watched all the re-runs on Challenge. Bloody amazing show. I was really surprised to see Spoony do a review of it. It's something so specific to the UK that you'd think no Burgerstanian would know about it.

only kind of 2000's since it's still ongoing, but over a year ago I watched Doc Martin on the TV and I really liked the show. It's about a highly skilled surgeon who developed a fear of blood so he moved to some shithole in Wales to work as a GP, oh yeah and he's a socially inept sperg. I enjoyed watching it so I might as well mention it here, maybe someone else knows it or will check

The thing about Doc Martin is that it is about a painfully annoying middle class man who is every single middle class stereotype I hate about the middle class and I am too autistic to tell if it's a subtle comedy or a bad drama. Fucking amazingly accurate portrayal of actual GPs. though. Spot on.
The issue I always had with Doc Martin wasn't so much that it was deliberately designed to be as austisic as possible (which makes for VERY uncomfortable viewing at times) but that it was every shitty sitcom "will they, won't they" trope packed together into one boring show about a middle class sperg. There is absolutely ZERO chemistry with his apparent love interest who he pushes away at every opportunity but also gets aspie sad whenever she goes away.

It’s a show where if you are an aspie it cuts too close to the bone and shows just how representation doesn’t always work. Doc Martin is a complete tosser who doesn’t deserve to be pissed on if he was on fire and while I get it was sort of a… slice of life comedy? It feels more like testing the waters of modern programming that’s absolutely designed by committee to hit inclusivity targets.

To show something from that era that was actually really fucking funny but also incredibly niche I present to you "Look Around You". A show that mocked those shitty science videotapes that were shown in science class when the teacher was hungover as shit. Played completely straight it's something that really has to be seen to believed.

I just remembered another program.

Come Dine with Me was great. But not for the reasons it was intended to be. I thought it was great because more than any other reality program it exposed how ugly and narcissistic the middle class can be. Far beyond that comfy BBC style portrayal you see in other programs. You really get to see a level of pettiness not seen anywhere but a real life office or retail job.

Facejacker did a Come Dine with Me sketch. No one but Kayvan Novak was in on it. They all thought it was just a normal Come Dine With Me episode. A lot of middle class people in the UK have this bizare desire to completely kiss arse to rich men no matter how gross and offputting they are. In the hopes that he might give them a tenner or something. You see that here. No one once goes "Hey the weird sex tape room and the soliciting of sex from Thai massagers is a bit weird, innit?" They all just go "Oh well he just lives differently from us.". The complete arse kissing is hilarious.
