Disaster 2-year-old Indiana boy dies after accidentally shooting himself - I would too in this time

A 2-year-old boy in Indiana died after he accidentally shot himself with a gun found in his home, police said.

The shooting happened just before 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Fairmount, about 76 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

The child, identified by Indiana State Police as Leighton Owings Seals, was in a bedroom when he "gained access to a loaded Ruger nine-millimeter handgun," according to a press release.

"Evidence indicates the boy pulled the trigger on the Ruger and was struck by a single bullet," police said. He was taken to the hospital where he died.

The boy's mom, Caci Seals, 22, was in another room feeding her infant child at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

"This is an ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time," state police said.

Authorities said that once the investigation is complete a report will be sent to the Grant County prosecutor's office for review.
Also can no one afford a damn safe? Or at least telling the child that the gun isn’t a toy? Seriously, this is like the 5th time it’s happened since August. What the hell.

They all come with a lock, tards will tard, if they couldnt bother with a cable lock I doubt they would use a safe despite having two children in the house.
 
seeing as how its was 9mm I am gonna guess it was a semi auto pistol. which means it was racked and had one in the chamber.

I m nervous as fuck about what i keep in my house. when things started getting hairy with the wuflu and weird shit going on at the neighbors. I unlocked my gun but fuck if I loaded it.

Hell I had a very nice if naive asian lady from work ask if she could "barrow" a pistol. pressed her for what and turns out she wanted to drive 2 hours and leave it with her immigrant parents. I explained that they need to buy their own and learn how to shoot.

I was told they just needed it to wave in the air to scare bad people.

I was able to get through to her that basically everything she was saying was all around a bad idea and recipe for disaster.

Or just lock the door to the bedroom or put one of those cheap door handles that lock. It's a two year old, they get into everything but are not yet smart enough to bypass a locked door.

Most modern 9mm handguns have trigger/grip safety mechanisms, with no manual safety. This is for extra speed in a self defense scenario.

Unfortunately, this means they’re easier to accidentally shoot by kids towards themselves.

Manual safeties come in several varieties, but the best are those that physically prevent the firing pen from being able to move and strike. These aren’t the most common in hand guns. Most simply block the trigger from being pulled to allow the striker/hammer to go into motion.

This is a senseless tragedy and a reminder to responsible gun owners to keep your firearms well out of reach of young children.

These jackasses are making everyone else look bad, parents and gun owners alike. Don't keep a goddamn LOADED gun in your house with a toddler, AND it's well-documented to lock up anything you don't want a toddler getting into, because they're like cats. If they know they're not supposed to touch something, they're going to try to figure out why you told them "no".

On a much darker note, at least Daddy doesn't have to worry about defending his family anymore...
 
I don't know why, but I find this hard to believe. How does a two year old manage to shoot himself with a pistol weighing over a pound? And even if he did (not going to say if he did or didn't) but did the parent REALLY leave it racked and ready to shoot? Ruger pistols have a manual safety mechanism that has to be engaged before you can fire. So basically, the owner of this pistol not only had a bullet in the chamber but also disengaged the safety and left it in a location where a two year old could get to it? wow

I think someone here posted in another gun thread that there's a specific way kids tend to shoot themselves. They aren't strong enough to handle it like an adult, so they tend to brace it against something stationary and push down on the trigger to pull it. The problem is, when they do that, almost inevitably the gun points straight at their chest, and once they pull the trigger, it's all over but the crying.

It’s entirely possible the kid managed to flip the safety off himself. It’s also very possible the model is one of the ones that doesn’t have a manual safety.

Most people now leave self defense handguns loaded and ready to fire. Saves time. No need to rack it. Of course, this is more dangerous but the trade off is often seen as worth it. Sadly, this means that it’s easier for kids to accidentally shoot the damn things when they get a hold of them.

Yeah, I personally keep my gun ready and loaded just in case of emergency so I totally get that... but I don’t have kids so...
