Jace is her son. She's lived with him being a bit on the "needs medication to function as a stable human" all her life. Despite the whole religious leanings and the issues that come there in, she's probably to some degree a bit used to this. She also doesn't want her son to die living on his own like a maniac.

Looking at it more it loos pretty small caliber. I'm going with pellet gun of some kind. At most a .22, but I really don't see Deagle Nation ever laying their hands on actual firearms, pretty much out of principle at this point.
