Spending 35 minutes downloading gundam-wing-knights-of-fire.mp3 encoded at 128kbps over Kazaa was an early internet rite of passage but anything encoded at less than 320kbps in a modern context is unlistenable IMO. Zoomies and Alphas with good ears might not even like that.

Still don't know how they managed to fit a season of your favorite anime into a 2mb executable on file sharing platforms back then though.
 
The music piracy scene sure used to be autistic, didn't it? It probably still is, but I haven't paid it any mind in ages, now that everything I could ever want is either on Soulseek or YouTube.
I miss what.cd and waffles.fm dearly.
It's 100% true that going on a run or just walking around the city, I don't really need more than YTMusic or Spotify streaming. I don't even need great headphones either, just gimme something half decent with some volume, proper phone controls, and as much IP protections as possible in case of rain or just me being careless.
But at home I got proper monitor speakers and a nice audio interface, and I want lossless as often as possible
 
WAV works everywhere. You can get 128 GB usb flash drives for under $15. Space is no longer an issue.

Use EAC to rip to WAV and have EAC make a .cue file for the metadata and track placement of the CD.

WAV can also handle higher sampling rates and bit depth than Redbook CD standard for digitizing your needle drops and reel-to-reel backups.
 
In Defense of the 128 Kbps MP3: The Greatest Music Media Format Ever

You can always settle for less, but 128 Kbps MP3 has obvious problems, with some songs encoding worse than others. Jango serves up 128 Kbps MP3 or 64 Kbps M4A (AAC), and you can tell when you hear a dud.

192/256 Kbps is probably fine. 320 Kbps or lossless FLAC for the purists or archival purposes. I think the average lossless FLAC song is probably around 30 MB, which means an 8 TB hard drive could store over 200,000 of them.
 
FLAC for local storage, 224 or 256kbps AAC in soundKonvert so I can just throw a folder of converts on a USB drive to move onto an old macbook and load my final gen iPod touch up some more.

Most of my audiophile friends are musicians who can hear incredibly subtle differences in pitch, it's less that they're listening to the quality to justify the expense and more that they're so autistic about the quality that they think the expense is worth it.

You are allowed to be an audiophile, anyone is allowed to be an audiophile, if you want to blow your money you can on whatever you want, the only reason why anyone cares is because they're all copies of the same faggots who get online and post the same 3 things over and over again about how they're superior to everyone else. Every audio fag I've met IRL who isn't a musician is always fat and acne. Audio niggers are like vegans, if 15 mins goes by without them telling someone about it, they'll explode
 
128kbps was not good enough with early 2000s encoders. I found 160kbps VBS to be more reasonable while still having good size reductions.

These days I rip CDs to ALAC (apple lossless) and 320kbps constant bitrate MP3 because there are a surprising number of things which still only play MP3s (ex: my car's built in mp3 player) but space isn't a concern to me anymore.

I was really surprised to find MiniDisc LP2 mode to have excellent quality, I have a really hard time telling the difference vs source CD even with careful listening. LP2 is ATRAC-3 at 132kbps, and they did this in 2000.
 
I listen to 128kbps MP3 only if there's no other version of the album available. This is usually the case with really obscure metal demos. I prefer 320kbps MP3 because it strikes the perfect balance between quality and file size. I download FLAC only if I really, really like the album. And yes, I absolutely can tell the difference between 128kbps and 320kbps MP3 files. 128kbps always sounded compressed and sometimes contained strange audio artifacts, while 320kbps is richer and fuller. You can hear all the finer details that were absent in 128kbps.
