I think Chris is so recently obsessed with himself and making copies of himself and everyone being him is because it's just natural to him, as well as being the natural outcome of his lifestyle. His entire life is about him, he has no friends, he has nowhere to go that hasn't banned him, he can't relate to people, sometimes he can't even speak his first language. Ultimately, other people aren't comfy enough for his increasingly-soft fantasy land. But it gets lonely with just him there, so he'll make more of him.
It might also have something to do with mortality. Maybe he's getting even more stressed about the idea of Barb dying and it being just him, and after that there'll be no more of his family (aside from the large family outside of his house that the Chandlers have fully alienated). It's a wish fulfillment fantasy of his family being infinitely large, made out of nothing but him. Cuz again, he just can't swallow the idea of there being other people around, that he can't relate to or understand.
Before, none of this was a problem, he had gal-pals and his psyche hadn't completely deteriorated yet. Although he always refuse to sympathize with his gal-pals and projected his thoughts and desires on to them like he does everyone else anyway. But now that he's been alone and rejected for so long and won't take his mind away from talking ponies that like everything he likes and hate everything he hates, his thought-process is increasingly going inward, and he's starting to even forget other people beside himself can even exist.
It actually sounds like some really cool Mother-esque villain's backstory, I might save this theory for a villain concept if I ever need it.
That sounds similar to the backstory of Francis Dolarhyde -a.k.a the Tooth Fairy- from Red Dragon, by Thomas Harris.
