Why Aren't There More Japanese Horror Films

Seriously, I think I've seen most if not all of them. It's not like the West where there's a ton of great horror films. So why aren't there that many Japanese horror films?
I love Kyofu
Ring
Parasite Eve
And several others

I think the Japs when they make horror films, they're like 10x more thought-provoking, scary, and unique than anything you can find in the West, but they're just so few. What I love is that the themes and scenery in Japanese horror films are sort of elevated forms of Cosmic Horror.

The answer to your question is that there are tons of Jap horror movies, but like most live action Japanese cinema its medicore and rarely translated. When your country can't make live action block busters that sell in other countries why fund something niche like horror.

I'm not a huge fan of other Japanese culture......except for its conservativism and their willingness to laugh and brown people and other foriegners. I've watched some anime, mainly psychological and Sailor Moon when I was a kid. Overall, I find anime lacking as well. A lot of the modern stuff is overproduced garbage with the same plot + big booba.

They have half an idea and run with it, fuck the questions left hanging, just claim they're up to the viewer to interpret and call it a day. Plus, little girls aren't scary and they seem to think they're the scariest thing on the planet.

Honestly? The way I see it the Japanese don't churn them out in the same way the West does. There's a new shitty direct to streaming slasher or Blumpkinhouse type thing all the time. The Japanese horror that makes it over here is usually pretty good. The Japanese have a strong horror/supernatural tradition with its own unique quirks.

There are a lot, they just aren't subtitled.

There are really great 70's ones too. Just yeah, not subbed and probably not "horror" compared to western standards, perhaps.

Check out Korean Horror as well, there's some good subtitled ones out there.

There are plenty of Japanese horror movies, it's just most of them are shit. The ones good enough to justify translating and exporting are the tiny exception. Which of course is true for the film exports of any genre and country.
