Metal Gear Solid 2 is a steaming pile of piss

its a joke, he struggles at either and the writer he worked with had all the talent. He did however have a strong input that ended up being in service to something interesting, which is all the tiny details like being able to electrocute soldiers with downed electrical lines in V.
busted powerlines and the water gun really opens up the game to so much stupid bullshit and it's fucking great. It's Metal Gear meets Bugs Bunny

That is probably the biggest failed moment in that game.

What the fuck was he thinking? Two man sharing an awkward car ride while a lady scream-sings in the background for about 2-3 minutes, what? It's fucking pathetic. Every single person I've seen play that game either goes silent in complete bafflement or starts laughing hysterically when that shit comes up.

The Rocket Arm is considered a silent weapon in-game. It's a ranged projectile which can take out a whole guard post, ignores armor, and recharges within seconds.

Remember when guards in MGS1 would react to the Nikita rocket and shoot it down? :geek:

20 years of technology really helped those guys out

Never forget that every MGS was supposed to be the last one, so almost nothing had a point or purpose outside of just being a general way to move the plot forward or looking cool.

That's why the story is so fucked up the further you go.
I wonder how that true that really is though, if you look at MGS1, it does seem like the story is pretty well resolved and doesn't really leave room open for a sequel, but at the same time Kojima pretty clearly seems to be setting up the idea that Big Boss is still alive when Snake asks "is there some reason you can't do that?" when wondering why the US gov can't just give Liquid Big Boss's remains and is met with only silence by Campbell, pretty curious.

And of course he claims he wanted MGS2 to be the end and end on an open note, but we are talking a pretty open note, it's no wonder people demanded a follow up because it really did seem like it was intended to be followed up on.

If I may speculate I think Kojima viewed Metal Gear as something he could return to after long gaps doing other games if he wanted to, much like how there was a long gap between Metal Gear 2 and MGS1 with the Sega CD port of Snatcher and Policenauts in between, so he seeded them with potential plot threads in case the mood hit him to continue, but then he got roped into continuing the series whether he really wanted to or not, with no "maybe if I feel like it"

Don't they explain that they can't give Liquid Big Bosses remains because the genome army was technically illegal or something and giving it up would be implicate the US to the rest of the world? It seems weirder that Campbell would know Big Boss isn't really dead and would have never disclosed that to Snake in all the years following Shadow Moses.

It's kind of like how people take the line about Naomi working with "some other group" as evidence of The Patriots, when it was more than likely meant to be The Pentagon/DIA at the time of writing.

And I always thought that Kojima wanted MGS2 to be *his* last Metal Gear, but was (at least early on) hopeful that others would take over the franchise. Wasn't that the plan with MGS4 before people literally sent him death threats to come back?

I find it fascinating that the thread was originally made to talk shit about MGS2 and it naturally evolved into a discussion about Kojima's career as a whole and if he's a hack or not. Dude's simply got that auteur vibe.

Personally, even tho I think Death Stranding is retarded and boring as hell, I'm excited to see what new steps awaits for us in the Hollywood Kojima era. You guys wanna make bets on who's going to be the next celebrity cameo? My bets:

Doesn't necessarily mean that Campbell knew Big Boss was still alive, just that he didn't have an answer for Snake, what you mention is another reason given why they can't give up Big Boss's remains, but that specific scene does seem to imply there's more to it than just that.

If Kojima made movies though, they be Uwe Bowl levels of garbage. We can all admit that, right?
Not really, no.

I don't understand why people make statements like this, there's plenty to criticize about Kojima, but the guy clearly does still have talent.

Not more than likely. Kojima has actually flat out stated at some point that Liquid as Miller was trying to push them towards the DIA. I think it's in the notes in the games script as well.

but that specific scene does seem to imply there's more to it than just that.

I'm pretty sure the scene was supposed to imply that they were being forced to keep Snake in the dark intentionally.

Either way, I don't know how many times Kojima is going to have to say "I didn't plan out anything in advance" for people to understand that he didn't plan out anything in advance.

I'm a sucker for Mads Mikkelsen.

If Kojima decided to make nothing but Death Stranding sequels with exponentially more artsy fartsy up its own ass stories for the rest of his life, as long as Mads was the main character, I'd play em.

Norman Reedus is too fucking boring to draw me in. Dude cant act for shit and has a monotone voice, I thought everyone stopped caring about The Walking Dead 5 years ago, I dont get Kojima's obssession with him.

You know what would kick ass? A remake of the original Metal Gear in the Fox engine with a crazy coked up late 80s soundtrack
The fact they spent so much time making a new engine for mgsV and then made the game get put out unfinished with the last chapter nd final boss not even implimented in, kicked kojima out, and then used the engine solely for MGS survive and metal gear pachinko is a fucking crime. Could you imagine MGS style remakes of the first 3 games? 3 being both Metal gear 2 and metal gear 2:snake's revenge? Fucking cyborg venom big boss in modern metal gear artstyle? Shit would be cool.

At the time I thought the ending to MGS2 was both complicated(the tonal shift, it was pretty ethereal) and hilariously on the nose[edit: maybe a bit later, not exactly when the game ended].

Arsenal crashes through the financial center of the world and into wall street. Shortly thereafter a voice announces that they're the patriots and tells Raiden and Snake about the old disembodied spirits that are the secret rulers of things and they're in the walls of the white house, they have been around for a long time and they control blah blah blah, while Snake and Raiden are looking directly at the stock exchange.
Kojima is really fun and can come up with ridiculous ideas but he's not subtle, IMO people have been overthinking the end of MGS2.

The game that followed up on that, MGS4: the War Economy, Privatized Military to war ECONOMY, war is a business, corporate military, the business of war, so much money in war it drives the economy, makes it stronger than before!
