Kevin Feige's woke Phase 4 approach is turning out to be a disaster of epic proportions as now it is reported that if Shang-Chi bombs at the box office, which it is expected to do, that Disney will delay the release of Eternals.

The info comes from Vulture's report about how Sony is going to further delay the release of Venom 2, where the site reached out to additional studios sources to see if there would be similar delays, where it's noted that Marvel could delay the release of Eternals if Shang-Chiunderperforms, which follows Black Widow being a colossal catastrophe:

Among studio sources reached by Vulture, the short-term outlook is that autumn’s big films (such as Dune and Top Gun: Maverick) will most likely stay on their scheduled release dates — although Marvel Studio’s Eternalscould be delayed if the 24th MCU entry Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsunderperforms at the box office upon its September 3 release.

Recent estimates have the Shang-Chi opening box office as the lowest debut of any MCU movie, including lower than Ant-Man's $57 million and The Incredible Hulk's $55 million, with a range of $35-55 million.

Disney losing faith in Marvel​

Similar to Black Widow, Disney seems to have lost faith in the Marvel brand, as following Disney releasing Black Widow at the same time in theaters and on Disney Plus, which has spawned a lawsuit from Scarlett Johansson, Disney announced that following a 45-day exclusive release, Shang-Chi will be made available digitally--something that has sparked controversy in regards to comments made by Disney CEO Bob Chapek and Shang-Chi star Simu Liu.

"We are not an experiment," said Liu in regards to Chapek's comments about how Shang-Chi getting an experimental release. "We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US."

It should be noted that, obviously, Disney was aware Black Widow was going to bomb big time which is why they released it right away on Disney Plus, as Disney makes a lot more money from Disney Plus purchases than movie theater tickets.

It also seems obvious that Disney thinks Shang-Chi will be a bomb which is why its 45-day theatrical release is considered an "experiment," and Disney apparently thinks the upcoming November release of Eternals will fail as well, hence the release date change.

When the movie stars are suing or feuding with the studio or siding with one another against the studio (Elizabeth Olsen recently came out in support of Scarlett Johansson) that shows just how bad things are.

Feige's woke MCU approach is a bust​

Feige's woke approach doesn't look to be getting any better as upcoming releases include a slate of woke content, which is where characters are changed for the sake of political correctness and/or the liberal agenda is promoted at the expense of quality story:

Shang-Chi - Simu Liu recently said the film "will change the world" and will finally give the audience an "aspirational" Asian character (though that doesn't necessarily mean the movie will be woke).

Eternals - gender-bent, race-swapped characters; regarding the story, the trailer revealed that although the entire universe was threatened by Thanos, they decided to stay out of it (makes sense, right?).

Hawkeye - Jeremy Renner replaced by Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop.

Ms. Marvel - politically oppressed Muslim character (that replaced Carol Danvers in the comics).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - with Marvel Comics killing Doctor Strange, a new woke MCU Doctor Strange is speculated; it's also known Feige wouldn't allow Benedict Cumberbatch in WandaVision because he's a male character (ditto for Robert Downey Jr. and The Avengers in Black Widow).

Thor: Love and Thunder - Natalie Portman becomes the Female Thor; Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie is looking for her "queen" of New Asgard.

Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever - rumors offer Shuri will become the Black Panther and that Ironheart will be introduced in the movie who replaces Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark in MCU. In the comics, Ironheart is a teenage girl who steals Iron Man tech and is allowed to keep the Iron Man suit, though she is a child and has no superpowers (see how the story gets sacrificed for wokeness?).

Captain Marvel 2: The Marvels - just watch the first movie, and The Marvels will feature Brie Larson ('nuff said?), Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel; the director recently said the movie is about "pain and trauma."

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - unknown how woke James Gunn will go, but he may feature a woke version of Quasar, and the comics have gone completely woke; interestingly enough, Gunn is leaving Marvel to go back to DC, so maybe Guardians 3 won't be all that woke and is the reason why Gunn is heading back to DC.

Blade - unknown, though look for something about Blade's daughter.

Deadpool 3 - Ryan Reynolds sold out his writers for two female newbs (as demanded by Feige and Marvel).

Fantastic Four - rumors offer Feige is going with a diverse version of the characters.

Captain America 4 - Chris Evans replaced by Anthony Mackie's Falcon, a character with no super powers.

Moon Knight - TBD.

She-Hulk - unknown, but likely woke as it will feature the goofy version of Mark Ruffalo's Hulk (men are bad, etc).

Armor Wars - the original comic featured Tony Stark as Iron Man getting his tech back from various villains in what is one of the best Iron Man stories, IMO; obviously, James Rhodes replaces Tony, and it is said Ironheart will be in the series, again who replaces Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark.

Ironheart - woke like the comics (see above).

Secret Invasion - unknown.

I knew about some of these changes, but putting them all together like this, it looks horrendous.

Spoiler: Character history and comics sperging

The MCU was successful of the back of established characters with decades of classic storylines, characterization, and development. The ones they're introducing are inventions of the last 9 years that were terrible failures already.

Ironheart, Kate Bishop, Ms Marvel, Jane Foster/Female Thor, Tomasi-era She-Hulk, post-2012 Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Shuri, all were terribly written, terribly characterized, and flopped hard. Most of them had their series cancelled and rebooted multiple times over a span of 5 years. (Female Thor was the only one that didn't immediately crash, because she was early in the cycle. But sales declined steadily after the first 12 issues.)

On top of the immediate failures, you have the "no one cares" characters. Shang-Chi, the Eternals, Valkyrie, Monica Rambeau, the Fantastic 4 (in recent memory), and Moon Knight (I like him but most people only know him from cameos in other stories). That doesn't mean they'll fail in the MCU; remember that no one cared about Iron Man until the first movie. But that took Robert Downey Jr and Jon Favereau to make people care. Phase 4 doesn't have that kind of talent on tap.

Finally, you have the popular characters/franchises still limping along. Guardians would be a "no one cares", but the MCU made them popular, and depends entirely on Gunn's talents. Black Panther's actor died, and Shuri is no substitute. Falcon is not Captain America; the Disney+ show already flopped. Blade and Deadpool could be good, but they're outside the MCU, and haven't released a movie compatible with Phase4 wokeness. Dr Strange has the most potential, if they actually go full Lovecraftian horror. But after Endgame, I doubt anyone in the MCU has the ability to write cosmic scale magic correctly.

(Armor Wars and Secret Invasion are wildcards. Secret Invasion would be a terrible tie-together event to portray in a movie, it requires much different pacing than Civil War or Infinity War did. It would be difficult even if wokeness wasn't a factor. AW is weird; it was a great Iron Man story, but Tony Stark is dead. A post-Endgame TV series with Ironheart crammed in sounds absolutely terrible. I would have loved to get a War Machine stand-alone movie, Don Cheadle got robbed as bad as Scarlett Johansson/Scarlet Widow did with the timing.)

In short, there's no basis for success built in to this lineup. There's no high-caliber talent who can craft something amazing from the mediocre or obscure material they are given. There isn't even bankable nostalgia any more; that's been mined already, tapped out.

There's just money, and political agenda. That's all they have left.

I still don't understand why they decided Clint and Natasha had to get the soul stone. Fuck. Make it Cap so the film feels more impactful. Or just kill Clint.

Another thing going against them is the story. Iron Man set up the world, Thor set up a initial credible antagonist with Loki, while Captain America set up, whether planned or not, set up the infinity stones. They needed something to get them into space, which is where Guardians of Galaxy fits in. What is phase 4 setting up? The multiverse seems likely, but that seems limited to Loki, Spiderman and Doctor Strange thus far. Falcon and the Winter Soldier arguably flopped, Wandavision brought out more magic, but dropped the ball at the end. Black Widow, ignoring the bad writing, should have been a phase 3 film. Everything else looks like stand alone films or sequels for the sake of sequels. What makes this worse for the story is that they had an easy out with Infinity War that was never thought of or brought up.

Galactus.

When we visit Titan, Thanos uses one of the infinity stones to show how it was before his exile, only for him to remove the veil and show it in its cataclysmic state. Through the dialog, it is implied something happened there after his exile and Brolin's performance further implies it wasn't his doing that destroyed Titan. Marvel has had plenty of major events in its literary history, but they are still relatively limited in stuff that can destroy entire planets outside of magical/dimensional fuckery, so what can drive someone mad to the point where he believes that half of all life needs to be wiped out for "balance"? Well, having a massive mother fucker eating your home planet for its life force would definitely be on that list. Plus, it would add a layer to the bat shit crazy plan towards the step of sound and logical; to starve the very thing that ate everything you had ever known & loved. Starve Galactus, and by proxy you save countless planets & lifeforms. There's your balance.

All they had to do is tease Galactus. When they kill Thanos in the beginning of Endgame, have him make a passing remark on starving destruction, with a hint of fear (not so much for his eminent death, but for thinking of Galactus). During the final battle, have Thanos say things out of desperation about stopping something (wouldn't be as confident without the glove like in Infinity War). Hell, have a shot out in space with a voice talking about another great release of energy from Earth and going out to investigate it, only to pan out to show Silver Surfer or at least his surfboard. You still get the emotional conclusion of Iron Man being dead and Steve Roger's growing old, but get the set up for the next storyline.

But no. Instead, Marvel is launching spitballs to see what sticks and trying to use the current, abysmal comics as templates to go forwards. Yes, the article makes points with Disney growing leary of Marvel's future and that Feige is basically giving the future films a fucking noose, but the simple little shit I suggested would have kept some interest going forward.

Disney may not be able to use Galactus or Silver Surfer because they were the subject of one of the Fantastic Four movies. Paying to get Spider-Man back is one thing, but paying to get a potential villain for the next arc of the franchise might not fly when they can tell themselves they have all the rest of the comics to pull from.

Also fighting Galactus seems like it might just come across as Thanos But Much Larger And Worse.

My theory is they wanted Natasha to have her hero's moment, since she hadn't had a couple of her own movies. Clint had the same issue, but they need to keep him around to handoff the Hawkeye role to Kate Bishop (ugh). Cap was destined for the big final Thanos fight, which was a great payoff for him.

(Also the final fight was already stacked with enough female heroes they wanted to push in Phase 4, Natasha wasn't required to diversify the boy's club any more.)

It's really weird that Marvel didn't give us a Black Widow or War Machine movie before Endgame. Both started out in the early Iron Man movies, both are good enough characters to carry a single film, and both check off some diversity checkboxes Marvel was clearly itching to fill. The BW movie was bad and it was badly timed; I think they may have spent 13 years trying to write a good script for her, and somehow never managed it. If that's the case, giving her the hero's death in Endgame was them giving up on trying.

Its really sad since a movie about Banner going on a nerd rage HULK SMASH spree could actually be fun.
