The State Department is always slightly ridiculous in situations like these. When it comes to small poor countries like Afghanistan where there's no real national interest, policy is practically nonexistent in the upper levels and tends to be managed by mid-level bureaucrats. Granted Afghanistan has had some importance in the past twenty years, but only a military base in the war against terror. The Clinton state department said similar things back in the 90s when the Taliban took control in '96, hoping that literal terrorists would respect the rights of all Afghans and that they might be recognized as the legitimate government on forming a representational government.

Basically all these empty words flapping out of their mouths means exactly what it meant then: "We have no idea what the fuck our plans are now that this happened. Ask us later, we might have a plan then, but probably not."

Honestly, all I can think of is how is just causing the rise and expansion of the CCP Dynasty. Afghanistan's new "civil society" would've organically been built up that way. And best of all, with us being the big dog in charge, we would've gotten exclusive rights to the stuff extracted from those mines.

a) we were still in Nam (until 1975)
b) we were fighting communists (whom Hollywood sided with throughout the Cold War)
c) we had back-to-back Republican Presidents (Nixon and Ford; enough said)

There's no anti-war Left anymore - they were purged when Obama won in 2008, and they certainly won't be allowed back now that Biden, the guy who wrote the Patriot Act, is in charge. And while we'd almost certainly be in for a media blitzkrieg if Trump had won, even that would have been tempered by the fact that Hollywood (in so much as it still exists) can never get fully on-board with the Taliban.
