What I would like to know is: when was it that these guys started deciding to go all clocktower instead of just offing themselves in the woods like a good loser?

Makes me wonder if all media is a mistake.

If you don't believe in an afterlife there's really no reason not to take a bunch of people down with you, at the very least you get to make sure people know you existed and vaguely get revenge on the society that wronged you (even if your specific targets had nothing to do with you).
The better question is why would a person just off themselves in the woods?

Sure, the original clocktowerer... but it was a (seemingly??) deeply uncommon event back then. Not so much now.

Then again, there's 'mass shootings' and then there's mass shootings. This guy is clearly a spree shooter much like Whitman (who might have been influenced by a glioblastoma) and I wonder if, but for the massive amounts of media attention that he knew would be provided for him, he might have just blown his head off.

But then again, 5 people killed (including one kid) is a downright pacifist weekend in Chicago during the summer and we don't hear much about those cases.
