Disney Reportedly Paying Comics Creators $5,000 for Movie/ TV Adaptions

Marvel and other studios are once again under fire for paying comics creators a pittance for their work.

Not shocking news, as the guy who made KGbeats said he was paid more for him being in Batman Vs Superman (did you even know KGbeast was in that movie?) than Thanos, Gamora, Drax and likely Shang-Chi once that movie comes out. But I thought it would be more than 5k

DC pays more than 5,000 bucks. There's nothing official in the contracts, but back when Jeanette Kahn and Paul Levitz were running the place,they started sending out checks to creators whose work was used in movies. I know Len Wein said he made more money from Lucius Fox appearing in the Batman movies than he did from creating Wolverine.

@FROG mentioned it years ago in one of his streams that's been the case and he created characters for DC and Marvel and they shown up in the movies. Although really need to ask him for more details on the subject.

I created ANGEL (the bug winged New X-Men version) who appeared in the film X-MEN FIRST CLASS.

I received a single check for $900 from Marvel.

I created IRON HEIGHTS PRISON which appeared in the Joss Whedon film JUSTICE LEAGUE.

I received a check for $96,000. Then six months later, another check for $32,000. A couple more checks that I don't recall. And a month ago, another payment for $7700.

Video games are even better. It's NIGHT AND DAY. DC Comics is a far less healthy company with regards to it's films, but it pays comic creators WAAAAAY better than Marvel does.

Accented Cinema did a video on one of the actors in Shing-Chi, Tony Lueng (I think I spelled it right, but the guy who plays Shang-Chi's dad). Apparently he's a really popular in Hong Kong and a great actor, so we'll see how that goes.

The woman doing the Eternals has actually smashed Chinese propaganda directly and has refered to America as "her country", so I think Commieland will just try and cut off American capeshit (not sure if they've given DC the same amount of shit but I can't imagine they differentiate much) in total.

It goes back to when I was a teenager in China, being in a place where there are lies everywhere. You felt like you were never going to be able to get out. A lot of info I received when I was younger was not true, and I became very rebellious toward my family and my background. I went to England suddenly and relearned my history. Studying political science in a liberal arts college was a way for me to figure out what is real. Arm yourself with information, and then challenge that too.

She actually seems based as fuck so far, so /tv/ sperging out about "muh bug people pandering" seems off for them criticizing her specifically. Whether or not her movie ends up worth a shit remains to be seen.

On a related note, Shang-chi is getting the traditional totally-not-paid-for praise so far. We'll see how that plays out.

I've been surprised by the praise for the film so far, but the thing about action scenes being great makes sense because A) MCU doesn't always have the best fight choreography and B) the guy who did the choreography on the Matrix(?) handled stuff in Shang Chi.

Martial arts movies typically do perform quite well, yeah. Particularly with blacks, despite what I think people might believe. All this movie is going to be is the run of the mill Jackie Chan/Jet Li type of shit with a capeshit exterior. There's a case to be made for "forced diversity" and the cast of this movie being increasingly up their own asses with the supposed importance! of the casting, but for the most part "Asians in a martial arts/martial arts flavored movie" isn't going to be anywhere close to the turn off for most people as I think a lot are betting it's going to be.

Are you fucking serious? Hollywood has been trying to pander to china for most of the last decade at least. I even gave examples. And those weren't even the only ones, just the most blatant.

I wasn't pulling it out of my ass that they put a (Vietnamese) chink into Star wars to appeal to china, and the chinese people thought she was ugly and didn't watch.

I don't really know who or what awkwafina is, but I've heard that the mainland chinks think she? is ugly too. I googled it, and yeah... that's a fucking ugly person. They're playing a main character in the MCU's newest chink bait movie?

What I find hilarious is how they then always half-ass their pandering and being "authentic."

When it comes to authentic representation in front of and behind the lens. They just want something that superficially looks correct to a racially ignorant person and are ignorant as to if it really is.

Similarly to how all female lead films need a female director now. This needed an Asian director. Do they get a Chinese one? Nope. Just some dude from Hawaii who has a Japanese parent. He looks Asian, authentic!

On a writers podcast a while back an Asian American female writer was talking about how annoying this is. She keeps only getting offered writing gigs that have Asian characters. Gets told it'll be great to have an authentic voice. No care if they're characters or people that relate to where her family was from. I can't remember the specifics. But it was something like she was being offered to write something about Koreans in Korea. Told they want to be authentic and representative in hiring her. They didn't understand when she'd say, "but my family is from the Philippines, my parents and I were born and raised in America." It was all so hollow and virtue signalling with no attempt to do what they were saying.
