Are you talking about Maximilian Dood? Yeah I’ve been seeing people like Cohn, Penguinz0, Summ1t, Esfand, and Swifty Twitch steaming it over the weekend. I really don’t think this hype train is going to last. Some ordinary gamers seemed genuinely enthused by the game meanwhile I’m getting fake vibes from everyone else.
So here's what I know about a bunch of these guys:
Cohh - Playing because it was a stretch charity goal. Made it super high as a gag, didn't expect anyone to donate that much. Someone did, but it eventually turned out to be a scammer despite multiple layers of checks to prevent it (guy scammed ACH payments somehow). Cohh decided to keep going though anyways, and has posted a video talking about how the MMO bug has bit him again, and he at least wants to see the story to completion.
Penguin0/Moistcr1tikal - Wanted to play it last year, but chat convinced him not to. Decided to say fuckit and start playing earlier in the week. I watched him play, and he's not narrating and is his typical monotone self. But he's said he likes it a lot so far.
Summit1g - Already level 45+. Watched the full NoClip today and was losing his mind over some of the ballsy moves Yoshi-P made during development. Seems to be enjoying it, but I don't watch him regularly.
Esfand - Playing because he got meme'd on Twitter with a "If a picture of this tree stump gets 10k likes, I'll play FFXIV." He's here now. Seems to really be liking it. Earlier today praised the new player experience for doing a damn good job easing in total MMO newbies to the genre knowing it might attract regular Final Fantasy nerds, not just MMO nerds. Also, this clip is a fucking riot.
Swifty - I've always known him to be a PVP player like Bajheera. He's the one that's a big question mark to me here. Haven't watched anything of his yet.
Maximillian Dood - FF7 is his favorite game of all time. Don't know his position on MMOs. Might be interesting to see if it actually holds his attention.
Either way, the amount of eyes this is going to bring by spreading to the more normie streamers is massive.
Beyond the streamers too, the games journalists have turned on World of Warcraft. Bellular was talking about this in his latest podcast, sharing such wonderful articles as:
World of Warcraft's latest cinematic is a narrative disaster and players hate it
WoW Disappointment, Plus Twitch, Start Mass Exodus Into Final Fantasy XIV
Blizzard learned all the wrong lessons from the MCU
Timestamp below for the start of the conversation (some delays due to equipment problems).
All of these factors together have shown that not only is Wow capable of bleeding, but it's killable. Hopefully we can finally see the MMO market start to break free of it's stranglehold and have it bring in a more healthy environment.
