No ovaries required: viable eggs grown in a dish


Scientists have successfully coaxed mouse stem cells to develop into functional eggs in a dish – that then grew into baby mice, according to a study published in Developmental Biology.

This has wide implications for assisted reproductive technologies in the future, because it may provide an alternative to egg donors.

A team of researchers, led by Takashi Yoshino of Kyushu University, Japan, developed culture conditions in a petri dish that imitated ovarian follicles to recreate the process that stem cells normally take to turn into eggs, which resulted in viable eggs. They called the lab-grown cells ‘reconstituted Ovarioids’ (rOvarioids).

Pluripotent stem cells are immature but have the potential to become almost any type of cell under the right conditions. In the ovary, these cells can become oocytes, which eventually turn in to eggs.

Normally, oocytes are encapsulated by ovarian cells in a fluid-filled follicle structure that help the oocyte undergo a round of meiosis (a type of cell division) and become an ovum (an egg that can be fertilised).

Previously, it was hard to grow the oocytes and ova in a petri dish because the ovarian follicles are essential in the process, so the team developed a culture as an “incubator” for the eggs to grow in, outside of the ovary.

The team took stem cells from mature female mice and placed them in the culture. This simulated the normal ovary environment so effectively that the stem cells developed into functional oocytes –rOvarioids – that could later be fertilised via in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and implanted into mice wombs.

Incredibly, 5.2% of the embryos derived from rOvarioids grew into babies after implantation, and all of the babies born via the method grew to adulthood.

This is comparable to the effectiveness of IVF-derived embryo transfer success in people over 43 years of age, but there is no restriction on the amount of eggs available, because lots of rOvarioids can be made.

“This technical breakthrough holds enormous potential for (reproductive) cell research,” says Lin Yang of the Genome Institute of Singapore.

Ying explains that this allows for high-yield IVF entirely without eggs or genetic manipulation.

Cool story, but they still need a womb, so this won't replace women or help troons.

Though speaking of, this experiment is only slightly less horrifying than the one where they stitched male and female mice together and tried to get the male through pregnancy this way.
 
Imagine using aborted babies to make these eggs. That would be some evil villain movie shit right there, effectively shortening the period between generations from two decades to less than a year. Do this for a few years and you'll be generations ahead of the human race.

Eventually you let these develop and it turns out they have 2 foreheads and 7 chins and faces only a mother could love. But they have no mothers because you aborted them to turn them into eggs. Loveless abominations.

Hm. Interesting. Yesterday I got recommended a video about chicken eggs being incubated in glasses and watched it. Out of the dozen, only one was able to survive full term. Obviously growing in eggs is vastly different from growing in wombs but it was interesting though (the narrator's cheesy tone helped).

Goes without saying but doesn't matter what creature the zygotes come from, this is incredibly creepy. Pray that God doesn't blink from all this pissing in His eye lately.

Ultimately, they don't' have the power to project their army into Albania if they default on the loan the used to build the billion dollar bridge-to-nowhere . Yes, it's them consolidating their power, but in a way that only works if everyone else plays along, since they STILL don't have the force-projection they said they would have any-moment-now 1t years ago... as opposed to the US consolidation of power which is "Fuck around and find out" and we can back that up with a carrier task force in a week.

it says the stem cells were obtained from the adult female mice. now how technical they are being when saying "obtained from" is remain to be seen

edit: I read the actual study, the stem cells were mESC's (mouse embryonic stem cells). so they were in fact from mouse babies.

Dystopian future remarks aside, this is a pretty damn impressive development. Stem cell research has been in a sort of purgatory for a while now given the difficulty in actually inducing desired differentiation, so something like this is a major leap. If we can actually create viable oocytes it's quite likely we'll see lab-grown organs in the near future.

agreed. im hoping that adult stem cell research advances further considering they lack some of the downsides that embryonic stem cells have (cell rejection by host, being tumorigenic, obtained from the destruction of viable embryos). I'd be very interested to see bone marrow and umbilical/placental stem research advance, as very recent research shows they may have the ability to change specialization like embryonic stem cells can.

imagine, a mother has a child and has the placenta saved for the future. if those stem cells can indeed be specialized into other cells that would mean they could be used to create new organs for not only her, but also for her child. organs that will not be rejected by the immune system and ones that do not have a higher chance to grow tumors, unlike embryonic stem cells.

I learned from a bio student some time ago that they were actually on a good path to concretely devising a way to create adult stem cells without any such harvesting, so at least the silent monster that's the medical industry isn't set to harvest cells from the vulnerable.

check the post I made right before you. all adults have stem cells that are specialized, basically they can turn into different adult cells, but only of a certain "class", ie. muscle specialized stem cells can turn into different types of muscle cells, but not into cells for the immune system. recent research has shown that bone marrow and placental stem cells may be able to change outside of these "classes" like embryonic stem cells can, but I am unsure if any headway has been made in that field.
