With otaku bait you don't really need to worry about Western influence, considering it is being kept afloat by BluRay and merch sales. It's more of how Japanese society views highschool as a much simpler time and more escapist compared to the heavy work culture that they have to do as adults. I know I mentioned it a few times but Japan's work culture is a major problem with the country.
