Awful food you love - Guilty pleasures galore

Another vote for frozen pizza, specifically anything made by Dr Oetker.
Based. Best heated in a gas oven.

As for awful food I love, I'm a fan of the potato fritter (a.k.a. potato cake, potato scallop although only actual retards refer to them as "potato scallops"). A thick slice of a large potato, battered and deep fried. If I'm too skint to afford fish and chips, I'll have a couple of potato fritters and chips instead. Or, if I'm really skint, just a couple of fritters.

any kind of meat stick thing that you find in a store, like slim jims or the jack links meat stick things. there's a carnal pleasure in just chowing down on some meat as a snack.

You want to start with simple pickled herring in white wine. It's sweeter, the least oily of all. Just fork a piece right out put of the jar. No prep. Just shake most of the wine/vinegar brine off and try it. It should taste of Nothing but wine with a slight fish flavor. Then move on the to german and scan varieties.

Appel's Filetierte Blatheringe right out of the tin is amazing. It's fried marinated herring in a vinegar sauce.
I realise I'm getting some top level instruction from a herring master, here. I'll do my homework next time I make it to a decent foodhall or my local market. Seems the straight out the tin approach is best.
Noted! Rollmops are for the experienced herrineg-enjoyer.
I can only eat Gregg's sausage rolls, every other sausage roll I've had is a horrible bite sized imitation, usually served at shit parties on a paper plate, the mini quiches are like fucking crack once you've had a few beers though.

Fray Bentos used to be really good from what I remember. The ones you get now are shit, watery gravy hardly any meat, rubbery crust (I used to like the soft underpants of the crust) but they're shite now. I read somewhere an additive in it was the same stuff they used for roadworks, might needto do some fact checking.

For nostalgia notes, pot noodles used to be great. Ones you get now are rubbish. They used to be so rich and salty and had little pieces of soy in them. Think it's the only time I'd unironically eat soy if they brought the original recipe back.
"soft underpants of the crust" ....Well...yes.

I've been good and not been in the morning greggs queue of shame for a while but I think my go-to is a steak slice. I might have to get reaquainted with the sausage roll.

My fray bentos encounter was in the mid 2000's . Dissection revealed two geometric cubes of beef-like flesh, stinking "gravy" and the rest was wet pastry. Horrifying. It erupted with dark ichor and stank like something Giger would have orchestrated for Alien.

I'm able to remember when pot noodles were still owned by Golden Wonder. I've not had one for about 20 years but I remember liking the beef and tomato. more than the chicken and mushroom with it's odd soy-sauce. Am I derranged or did they used to make mini kids sized ones?

I bought some Braunschweiger because I associate the taste with the past.

I understand how awful it is and also love it. But only in very, very small amounts.

If they sell it in Bongistan, I highly recommend shin ramyun black

When I was a fat latchkey kid I'd make an abomination that consisted of a ritz cracker with a spoonful of chocolate chip cookie dough on top, finished off with a squirt of easy cheese...

I don't know if this is shit or not but I fucking love Pizza Pockets, especially if they were made in the microwave.

Not exactly awful food, but my guilty pleasure snack is... microwaved pepperonis. I throw pepperonis on a plate and run it for 30 seconds but you can go for longer than a minute if you want to burn them crispy. I’ve done both but I prefer them to be a warm, soggy greasy mess instead. So yummy. No I don’t drink the grease left on the plate.
Mine is eating Chick-fil-A sauce out of the sauce packet in public.

I miss Gregg's big softies, they were great. Never really took to their steak bakes though. Other bakerie's ones seemed to always be better, same with cheese and onion pasties. Also wish they done festive bakes all year round.

The only Fray Bentos pie I really got were the steak and ale ones. Think those are discontinued now. Maybe they were always crap, I was just eating the nice ones. I do recall my grandad getting a steak and kidney one and I took one whiff of it and said I really can't eat that, it smells like actual shite. Maybe that's just a steak and kidney thing though.

And yeah, pot noodle peaked during their golden wonder era. The kid's ones were decent, the noodles were already crushed and seemed to have a different taste than the regular ones. Just little sodium packed pots of joy.

I know, I know 😆 Perhaps that's how they perfected the crispy base.

My mother-in-law recently told me about a Yorkshire delicacy she enjoys - they call it cake and it's very similar to a potato fritter, only it has fish inside it as well. Basically a deep fried chippy dinner! Never had it myself but frankly it sounds like the food of the gods.

I love how this 'awful food' thread has turned into a discussion of British foods. I think we're accidentally telling the world something.

I'd love to try a smack barm pey wet one day, but I can't see myself ever going to Wigan. I'll just stick with the pie floater; the Australian love child of a smack barm pey wet and a Wigan kebab.

Good fucking god. Yeah, Wigan doesn strike me as the kind of place where people need to go for anything, but if I'm ever in that neck of the woods I'll definitely try the smack barm pey wet! The pie floater looks damn fine too, thanks for the info.

All this talk of fried food has made me think of another questionable food joy (although I'm genuinely confused as to why someone people don't like it): fish finger sandwiches with pickled beetroot slices. The vinegary pickles just elevate the fish somehow. That said, I am happy to just eat the beets straight from the jar as well.

that brown pasty shit in crabs

Ive seen a few crustacean butchering videos, that's like the crab's fat or something, I think they called it tomalley and just scooped it and ate it right out of the crab's shell. Looked nasty but it can't be that bad if people eat it.
It's quite tasty, but unfortunately all my western friends say it's crab shit
