I refer to buffet food simply as 'brown food'. It's breakfast food in my house for about a week after Christmas and it's wonderful. My food heaven is traditional chav buffet food - seafood sticks, cheap sausage roll, vol-au-vents full of sandwich filler and e-coli, soggy cheese and onion quiche. Maybe a mini scotch egg. All served luke-warm and slightly dried out, off a flimsy paper plate. It's a pavlovian-association with disco lights and fleeting happiness from my 80's childhood.
I liked British and Scottish food. Fight me?Im british, so literally everything I eat probably falls under this category

I have no excuse for my hungover craving for all day breakfast in a tin, I got into that as an adult when I should have known better. It tastes of failure and regret, eaten cold out of the tin washed down with a hair-of -the-dog lager before the hangover really kicks in on the morning commute.
Anything with that old-fashioned fake strawberry flavour. Most of the e-numbers in it are probably banned now. Look, if I wanted realistic strawberry flavour, I'd just eat strawberries, ok?
It's "beige" in my household but the same. It's amazing how many things can be contained within pastry. Party Rings are my holy grail. I was taught to repeat that "I'm not allowed party rings or orange squash because I have allergies" thinking back, maybe my mum was just cheap and didn't want me to know what I was missing. I might have been robbed. My friends used to share their Iced Gems with me at lunch tho, so I wasn't entirely deprived.I refer to buffet food simply as 'brown food'. Speaking of 80s childhoods and paper plate buffets, I have two words for you, pal: PARTY RINGS
Sausage rolls in a tin? Holy shit, I'm from a post-apocalyptic northern estate but we had to draw the line somewhere. That sounds barbaric. I tried a fray bentos pie once and had to throw it away then take the bin out because of the noxious smell. Yet I do absolutely agree that sausage rolls gooey out the microwave are the best. You need to microwave those sausage rolls to get them nice and soggy then drown them in tomato sauce. The only palatable sausage rolls when sober are greggs.
If you were a young un in the 80s did you ever come across sausage rolls in a tin? I've had family members tell me they were lush
I can only go on my experience of kosher pickled herring nonsense salad. The sweet-sour-oily fish flavour always made me literally gag but I'm up for re-evaluating herring - There's got to be a use for it, right? I can see a good herring/vinegar combo working out. Might have to be brave and do a weird shop. Are rollmops a good place to start?Pickled herring, a pickle (or any pickled veggie) on the side, chunk of cheese, and a piece of bread is still my favorite lunch. Its similar to the plowmans lunch, wash it down with some ice water and a smol warm coke.

I do second the pickled veg/cheese/bread combo though.
