There was a brief period, at least in some places, where being a brony was a good way to show what a nice, sensitive guy you were. After all, it meant you promoted love and tolerance and weren't afraid to like something target at (little) girls. You didn't dismiss 'good'* storytelling just because it came from an overtly feminine source. Bronies were seen as being a softer side to the usually nasty internet, a more heartwarming version that used "friend" instead of "fag." It was the perfect fit for Dobson, who wants everyone to know just what a nice guy he is. What's easier than shitting out some ponies? Then the newness of guys openly admitting to liking things for little girls wore off and the creepier aspects of the fandom got more attention. Accompany that with the bronies pitching fits over the fact that the series didn't cater to them, and public opinion quickly turned against them. Dobson has always cared more about what people think of him than the things he actually likes, so he naturally jumped ship.

The other factor, of course, which should not be ignored, is the massive amount of lesbian shipping in the fandom.

I agree with that stuff. The show has quite an awful and overreacting fanbase. Just look at that sperg Mister Enter.
But frankly, I think that Dobson still is a fan of the show. The stigma of being a brony was relevant from around early/late 2012 and onwards and yet he remained part of the fandom long enough to do the artwork I linked. to some spin off that is relevant since summer 2013 and is despised by around 40% of all pony fans

OT: you don't miss much. Sorry, I consider the show having a few good ideas and I like the villains actually, but the show feels quite like something up tumblr's taste and has major issues. Many characters are surprisingly flat if not unlikeable if you think about it (including at least half of the leads) and there are pacing issues en masse. No wonder Dobbie likes it.

There are a ninja chick and some rich thief who Alex is afraid of in the comic too. Both are supposed to be "antagonists". you can't even call them flat characters because at least the thief never did anything within all his strips.
something else I need to reimagine. BTW, Friendship is Magic? I can think of of at least five better fictional groups of characters I would have no problem calling friends then Dobbies pirate crew. At least I don't remember being friends with someone involves molesting them.
