Dalmatians are proving to be Disney’s new best friends.

As Cruella heads into its second weekend, The Hollywood Reporter has learned the studio behind the Emma Stone-starrer is in early development on a sequel. Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for a sequel to the film that stars Stone as fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatiansvillainess Cruella de Vil.

Cruella debuted May 28 simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ under the streaming service’s Premier Access tier, making it available to purchase for $30. The film has earned $48.5 million globally. It received positive reviews and has been praised for its 1970s punk rock aesthetic.

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Disney has found success mining its library of beloved animated features for live-action, starting with Alice in Wonderland (2010) and including Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent (2014), Cinderella(2015) and $1 billion grossers that include Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019) and The Lion King (2019). The studio isn’t done with its successful decade-plus strategy yet as it has live-action reimaginings Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy and The Little Mermaid in the works.

So how do you make Cruella sympathetic anyway? Did Pongo maul her mother?

These Disney movies about the villains change enough stuff around that it barely is related to the originals. The people into these movies aren't going to view this Cruella as being the would be dog skinner. Haven't seen the movie yet, but think this movie has her become orphaned as a kid and try working for a fashion designer and some sort of feud happens resulting in her trying to terrorize or one up her boss.

So it's more about a nutty fashion designer than a cruel dog skinner, not exactly the worst thing for a kid's movie.

I am shocked someone would pay this much to see any movie, let alone a Disney cashgrab. This is like when they spent years making terrible direct to video sequels to their classics, resulting in the lowest quality movies the company ever produced, except people pay more to see it than they would at a cinema.

It is just like those direct to video sequels and in both instances it's short sighted, yeah you're making money, but you're also diluting the brand and damaging it's long-term future, so you're threatening your future ability to make money.

Looking back I still can't believe they really went for it with the direct to video sequels, gone were the days when a new Disney movie was a big theatrical event, now it also included cheap straight to video flicks you'd find at bargain bins, the fact that they didn't see how that would be damaging to the brand is hilarious, but at least the third DTV Aladdin was cool.

But Disney used to be a company that was super protective of it's brand, now and it started under Eisner too with the DTV films, they've essentially been strip mining the brand, what's "Disney" going to mean to people in another 50 years?

I'll just be over here waiting for the live-action prequel/origin story for Jafar from Aladdin that reveals he was abused by white Christian crusaders which is why he turned to dark magic. Then a sequel further cementing this as canon, so that by the time you get to Aladdin, you're hoping Jasmine, Aladdin and the Genie die.
