Butlerian notions of gender are generally disliked by a lot of troons nowadays it seems, especially by less intellectually sophisticated ones.

I had Butler inflicted on me at university, but long enough ago that PoMo bollocks theory was still confined to the subject areas where it can justifiably reside (the arts, essentially) and way before it jumped the tracks and started infecting future social workers and, for fucks sake,

Like most of the critical theorists there is a snippet of Judith Butler’s work that makes you go ‘oh yes, I can see how that might be so’ (‘gender’, as in ‘sex stereotypes’ can indeed be performative, and as such exist as an ongoing exchange between performer and viewer - hence that millions of women worldwide wear a dress and heels to go to on the pull in a nightclub and ratty old sweatpants and a hoody in the comfort and privacy of their homes. See also FtM Troon teens desisting in lockdown when they had no class mates/teachers to view their gender performance) but then it all descends into wanky linguistic tricks and everyone, students and professors alike are stuck fidgeting in a stuffy classroom pretending to each other that they get what the writer means in an ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ kinda way.
Butler’s best known work ‘Gender Trouble’ was definitely not written with enough foresight to explain the phenomenon of incel troons who never leave their dirty bedrooms and only ‘perform gender’ by picking the girl avatar to play a video game, nor with the nebulous concept of ‘gender identity’ in mind. Butler is equipped only to jabber on about gender expression and gender roles (and how to ‘queer’ them) but gender identity is a phrase/concept that came from sexology (and associated applied fields such as psychiatry and psychology) that troons and woke-o teens are trying to shoehorn into a civil rights issue.
The law cannot be written around invisible things inside people’s heads (hence the ongoing battle to not base laws on random old books about invisible gods and their murderous prophets).
Which segues into this identifying as a system nonsense, firstly it makes a mockery of people who do actually experience psychological disassociation due to extreme childhood trauma (ie, survivors of horrendous criminal acts, kids who are depicted in the images that the FBI needs to be searching the hard drive of certain Reddit admins for, children who witnessed dad beating mum to death) and secondly, how do you legislate for more than one consciousness in a single body? If your alter attacks someone then damn right your entire ‘system’ needs to be locked away for public protection - the ‘reality’ inside your head is meaningless outside of it.
so ‘gender identity’ cannot dictate the way we organise society - as California is going to have to admit in about 5 years time, once they’ve transferred all the incarcerated troons to the female prison estate.
