American woman sparks furious backlash for ‘tone-deaf’ viral thread about moving to Bali - welcome back to America bitch

An American woman has sparked heated debate on social media after a thread about her move to Bali went viral.
It seems she may have picked the wrong platform to gush about her new home. While her 20-tweet thread may have worked as an Instagram caption about making dreams come true, over on Twitter people had other thoughts.
The woman in question has since locked her account, but here’s a summary of the thread: after spending most of 2019 out of work, she and her girlfriend decided to try out Bali for six months, where she became a self-employed graphic designer and managed to live in a “treehouse” for just $400, compared to a $1,300 LA studio they were in before. They have now been there for a year, and she says that they are living an “elevated lifestyle” and that Bali was “the perfect medicine” for her physical and emotional health.

She lists the benefits of living in Bali as: safety, low cost of living, luxury lifestyle, queer-friendly, and goes on to share her positive experience as a Black woman with the Black community there. To close out, she links to her ebook Our Bali Life is Yours which helps other people to achieve the same dream. It is currently for sale for $30.
The backlash was immediate, with thousands of replies and quote-tweets, many of which were highlighting the impact that relatively wealthy American migrants have on local communities and gentrification.

Some tried to suggest these points were the equivalent to anti-immigration sentiment in the US, but others highlighted that this ignores the reality of the different power dynamics at play.

Her comments about living in luxury were also labelled tone-deaf, given that Indonesia is Southeast Asia’s most populous nation and its largest economy, yet around a quarter of the population lives just above the poverty line, with almost 10 per cent living in poverty.

People who are from Indonesia themselves also highlighted how different life is in the country for those without the writer’s American privilege, and the potential damage of encouraging more Americans to move there.

Others took the opportunity to point out the historical and ongoing violence and oppression which exists in Indonesia, but which she didn’t touch upon at all in her thread.

The Papua Conflict in particular has led to accusations against the Indonesian government of human rights violations including torture, extrajudicial killings and politically motivated arrests.
According to a 2019 report from Amnesty, “the government failed to protect human rights defenders, and restricted the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.”
While Bali is known to be more progressive, especially on LGBTQ+ issues, Indonesian law still discriminates against people for their sexual orientation and fails to protect them from hate crimes and homophobic attacks.
Despite many people branding the thread out-of-touch, there were also many who defended the writer, saying it shouldn’t be the responsibility of a Black queer woman to fix systemic issues affecting the country.

Before locking her account, the user posted one last tweet which seemed to acknowledge the backlash, saying: “The conversations being had here are valid. Though they aren’t the conversations I was having today. They’ve been seen and heard. Just sharing my story with people.”
Meanwhile, “Bali” continues to trend on Twitter as people furiously debate who’s right and who’s wrong in this complex scenario.

What is it with retards in LA thinking that the only way to live affordably is to leave the country? Have they ever tried not living in LA, maybe just go to another city or state? I guess that isn't bougie enough for them.
The amenities/lifestyle LA provides aren't accessible just anywhere. They don't want to move to a place with a lower cost of living if none of the stores, scenes, etc are missing. It's why you rarely hear of city people moving to anyplace rural that isn't 15 minutes outside of a decently sized city.

Kind of amazed a black woman is actually getting chewed out for anything. Generally black women are considered flawless and any criticism of one (however valid) is considered racism by the woke crowd. Even privileged rich brats like this chick clearly is.

Seriously, most white Americans can't afford to live in LA or move to another country. This chick has no room to bitch about being oppressed.
She isn't in the western world. Go outside of the self-flagellation that is North America and Europe; and they'll find out that everyone else is racist/supremacist/don't care for your bullshit. She's just too fucking stupid to realize it; it's why she immediately jumped to race.

She just found out that Indonesia isn't America. I've never left the country and even I know not to expect 'Murrica from outside 'Murrica.

Still, $400 a month is amazing. I haven't heard of rent like that anywhere in over 25 years. You can't even rent a room in a sorta safe neighborhood for that much most of the time. But it's the third world and she's living high on the hog compared to many indonesians. I can see why they are mad at her flaunting her western privilege while people starve in poverty. It's the way she presents herself. Most people in America can't pack up and move countries on a whim either. She's a spoiled new age thot. Glad she's being knocked down a few pegs.

She could be the ruler of the whole god damn world, and she would still find a way to bitch about how oppressed she is. She's a black woman from America, it's in her blood.

Indonesian immigration launches probe into American digital nomad following viral Twitter thread

Immigration authorities said they are looking into the files of an American digital nomad whose Twitter thread about moving to Bali went viral over the weekend, as unconfirmed allegations of possible visa violations mount online.

Putu Suhendra, who heads the information department at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, told Coconuts today that his office is looking into the matter.

“We are still checking the information on our database by checking the name of the concerned party with what’s visible on her Twitter account, but we have yet to find her name so far,” Putu said.

He explained that the foreigner’s data may be handled by other immigration offices in Bali province, either in Denpasar or Singaraja, adding that the Bali office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights are coordinating efforts on this case.

“The second possibility is that the name on her Twitter account is not the same as what’s on her passport,” Putu said.

Eko Budianto, who heads the immigration department at the ministry’s Bali regional office, said that several teams have been dispatched to look into the case.

“So far, we have dispatched several teams. They are checking her [visa] sponsor and we have contacted them. The sponsor is currently in Jakarta but it’s true that they have an address in Bali,” Eko said today.

Authorities said they will check the validity of her immigration documents and consider sanctions should any violation be found.

Discussions surrounding the viral thread are still going strong on Twitter at the time of publication, as many Indonesians accuse the foreign woman of being culturally tone-deaf and urging authorities to look into her visa status, the latter due to her encouraging people to skirt immigration rules and sharing tips on how to get around imposed travel restrictions in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

LOL get fucked you entitled bitch. Even if they find nothing, this'll be a further stain on her credibility.

These two women are on the next plane out of Bali back to LA:

They are black lesbians and went viral after posting this about how they moved from paying $$$$ to live in LA to living in Bali for way less money and were working as web designers online, and you can buy an ebook for $30 from them about how to move to Bali during covid:

Anyway, this went viral and a bunch of people on Twitter were mad saying '$400/month is more than my salary as an educated Indonesian'. A shit-ton of people reported them to immigration.

Immigration found her fairly quickly and she's now in detention waiting to be deported. Her girlfriend is going with her.

She was linked to this:

"A woman-founded, women operated company with the sole purpose to invigorate the WOC experience with ease and healing. From her business life, to her personal life and into family and friends, Her Own Lane shares celestial and ancient knowledge, real-life tools and relatable resources to achieve a life of wholeness that she desires."

I think it's a vague link tho. That Nicole Garcia seems to be colonizing Tulum (I'm not sure if she's there full-time), except she doesn't call it colonizing cuz she's black, and she talks about reiki and healing and bullshit like that, so when she spends her US$$$ in a poor country then it's totally spiritual man.

There was some twatter on Twitter about whether blacks could be colonizers (clue: if you move to Bali and it's super cheap because you're getting paid USD then, yes)

This tweet reply from the girlfriend caused extra rage:

It doesn't help mis-spelling the local currency as IRD, when it should be IDR.

Article follows: https://coconuts.co/bali/news/ameri...ith-twitter-thread-will-be-deported-official/

An American digital nomad whose controversial Twitter thread about moving to Bali went viral is going to be deported pending the next available flight, authorities said today.

Head of the Bali office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Jamaruli Manihuruk, said in a statement that official investigation found that the digital nomad, who the office identified as US citizen Kristen Gray, may have violated a number of immigration laws, including “spreading information that could unsettle the public,” such as Bali being queer-friendly and suggesting that foreigners can enter Indonesia during the pandemic.

“The concerned foreign national is suspected to have done business by selling her e-book and putting up consultation fees on traveling to Bali, which means she can be subject to sanctions according to the 2011 Immigration Law,” the statement also said, explaining that those actions mean Gray has violated the purpose of her stay permit.

Gray is in Indonesia under a visitor stay permit, which is still valid until Jan. 24. However, as the investigation concluded that she has violated a number of regulations, authorities have decided to deport her.

“An American national by the name Kristen Antoinette Gray is subjected to Administrative Act from Immigration in the form of deportation,” the statement said.

Gray is currently detained at the Immigration Detention Center in Denpasar as her deportation is postponed until a flight to the United States becomes available.

The American sparked a heated debate on Twitter after she wrote a thread about moving to Bali, for which she was accused of being culturally tone-deaf and encouraging others to get around travel restrictions amid the pandemic, among others.

Immigration authorities launched a probe just yesterday, following mounting allegations online of possible visa violations.

Deportation notice:

PRESS RELEASE Number: W20.HM.01.02 - 595
Denpasar, 19 January 2021

BALI IMMIGRATION FAST STEPS IN RESPONSE TO THE NEWS VIRAL, FOREIGN CITIZENS TWITTER ACCOUNT @kristentootie

Viral news about a foreigner tweeted on the @kristentootie twitter account on January 17, 2021 in the form of an invitation for foreigners to move to Bali during the corona pandemic. The person concerned stated that she could make it easier for them to enter Bali through the recommended agent who offered cheap, comfortable and LGBTQ + friendly living costs in Bali. Besides on Twitter, it is also published in an ebook at a price of USD30 and is followed by a consultation for USD50 for 45 minutes.

This became a trending topic on social media and mainstream media on January 17 and 18, 2021. In relation to this, the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights took the following steps:

1. Checking incoming data for foreigners on behalf of Kristen Antoinette Gray who entered Indonesia on January 21, 2020 at 23:04:54 WITA through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Furthermore, Kristen Antoinette Gray extended her residence permit at the TPI Denpasar Class I Immigration Office on December 22, 2020 which is valid until January 24, 2021.

2. After checking by the Immigration Officer, Kristen Antoinette Gray's sponsor, with the initials IGW, was found in the Ubud area and carried out a field check on January 18, 2021.

3. On January 19, 2021, the Immigration Officer called Kristen Antoinette Gray to attend the TPI Denpasar Class I Immigration Office for further examination.

The tweet of @kristentootie that invites foreigners to move to Bali during the Pandemic certainly contradicts the Circular of the Head of the COVID-19 Handling Task Force Number 2 of 2021 concerning International Travel Health Protocols in the Covid-19 Pandemic and Circular of the Director General of Immigration Number: IMI- 0103.GR.01.01 Year 2021 concerning the Temporary Restriction of the Entry of Foreigners to the Territory of Indonesia during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

From the results of the examination conducted by the TPI Denpasar Class I Immigration Office, it is suspected that the intended foreigner has disseminated information that is considered to be disturbing to the public, including:

1. LGBTQF (queer friendly) which in Bali Province is comfortable and is not a problem;

2. Easy access to Indonesian territory during the pandemic;

So she should be suspected of violating Article 75 paragraph 1 of Law Number 6 Year 2011 concerning Immigration which reads:

Immigration Officers have the authority to carry out Immigration Administrative Measures against foreigners who are in the Indonesian Territory who carry out dangerous activities and are reasonably suspected of endangering security and public order or not respecting or disobeying laws and regulations

In addition to this, the foreigner is suspected of carrying out business activities through the sale of e-books and the installation of Bali tourism consultation rates so that they may be subject to sanctions in accordance with Article 122 letter a of Law Number 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration which reads:

Any foreigner who deliberately misuses or does activities that are not in accordance with the intent and purpose of granting the Residence Permit granted to him.

Follow-up:
1. American citizen Kristen Antoinette Gray is subject to Immigration Administrative Measures in the form of deportation (expulsion) as referred to in article 75 paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 letter f of Law Number 6 Year 2011 concerning Immigration;
2. In connection with the deportation process, for the time being an American citizen on behalf of Kristen Antoinette Gray was placed in the Detention Room of the Class I Immigration Office of TPI Denpasar.

Note: The Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights urges foreign citizens to comply with the current COVID-19 pandemic situation to comply with health protocols and follow the correct procedures for obtaining visas and while in Indonesia.

Aparrt from being deported for saying Bali is LGBTQ friendly, there are a bunch of Indonesians on Twitter saying 'we don't want your BLM/LGBTQ bullshit, fuck off' https://twitter.com/skadooshhhhhhhh/status/1350965811775758339

She went from 'viral post' to 'shit I better lock my Twitter' to 'deported' in 72 hours.

She is claiming to be deported cuz she is LGBT.

"I dindu nuffin wrong my visa is still valid, I spoke on LGBT and I am being deported because of LGBT"

Bonus caps of black Americans being racist towards Indonesia for not accepting their shit:

Última edición:
Shes going to be shocked that now she's been legally deported that its going to be near impossible to get another tourist visa. Looks like her days as acting as a unlicensed travel agent and selling books on how to live in 3rd world countries for free are over.

How gay the newer softer indonesia is, choosing some weak deportation option. The whole city, the world would know what is and what is not ok if these apostates were led out of their home to the cable of the 200 foot crane parked outside.

Bali is Hindu and has its own woo. Her problem is her black entitlement.

Dindu 'It's so awesome being in Bali I can get this dope treehouse for $400/month'

Locals 'Stop colonizing my country'

Dindu 'I'm black, I can't be a colonizer, buy my book for $30 on how to move to your country and avoid covid restrictions'

Locals

She could have got away with her shit on Twitter in the US.
