It's not that hard to draw a Steven Universe character. Disney's characters on the other hand...
The humans certainly aren't at least. Maybe when he does a good job drawing Garnet complete with those gauntlets (that's the real hard part) I'd cut him some slack.
Funny thing is, there's plenty of artists who aren't good at drawing "on model". There's probably not many outside of pros that can fully imitate something perfectly and even then that requires a lot of model sheets.
But they have something else. Style. And I don't mean "style as an excuse to not draw decently in any way*
Take this for example:
Is it airtight in terms of anatomy? no, not really. Is it on-model? Again, not really. Does it need to be? I'd say no.
That's mostly because it's the artist's personal style, their little "flair" and as long as you know what a Nidorino and Nidorina are, you'd recognize them just as easily.
Thing is, when an artist applies their own style, things like "not exactly on model" are overlooked because hey, it's not going to look exactly the same and it could be an interesting take on their design.
But outside of smugface, anime and flying eyebrows Dobson really doesn't
have a style. Like if he had one and done Connie and Iago in that way, it'd be pretty excusable because hey, artist's interpretation and as long as both could be recognized easily then good enough.
But when you're basically aiming to copy, people
notice little problems like a face being a little too tall or such.
EDIT: Sorry, got lost in serveral topics and pages worth of posts... this isn't late is it? I'll just delete if it is... sorry.
