I've been lucky to have been contracted by a few companies who employ a lot of Amish and enjoyed some potlucks at some company picnic/family fun day type events. Some of the best comfort style foods and desserts I've ever had.

Pilchards in tomato sauce. I've tried them once, they're horribly oily and the tomato sauce does little to conceal that. The ones I tried also had bits of bone in them.

I can't recall the last time I saw any tins of it go through the till.

I also saw some salted fish in the international section. I don't think I've ever seen anyone buy a packet of that.

Most small canned fish have bones and spines in them. I pick them out easy enough. No one around me likes that sort of thing though.

I know my local grocery has caviar but does anyone buy that? It's kind of pricy but not break the bank worthy (probably not the "good stuff" that fancy restaurants use). I've never had the traditional stuff but I like roe on rice/sushi.

Ground beef that comes in logs. If you're going to buy ground beef why not just buy the stuff that comes wrapped with styrofoam? Something about the logs just reminds me of the expensive refrigerated dog food you see at pet stores. I don't even eat beef but something about it really turns me off.

I love pilchards. I will eat them on thin slices of baguette with nearly any kind of cheese.

Putting them in tomato sauce is so insane I can't even conceive of it.

Yeah, I think that might be why they sell them like that. I think people buy them because they're a lot cheaper than the ground beef you can actually see.
If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure logged beef has a higher fat percentage in it in comparison to regular beef too.

Is that for all of them? I know at my grocery store the beef, pork and turkey logs have their fat vs lean protein listed. There's several varieties all the way up to 95% protein/5% fat. The packaging may not be 100% accurate but eh.

Instant tea granules. It's not like instant coffee where I can kind of understand not wanting to grind your own beans or brew your own coffee, but you can already buy tea leaves in individual cup sized bags that you brew and throw away/compost. You don't need instant granules of it. I could just about understand it being bought in bulk to supply hot drink vending machines where they just mix hot water and other things, but these are sold in jars for people to drink at home.
Same goes for instant rice tbh, it's not really saving much time at all.

That's always been my experience. I'm pretty snobbish about ground beef admittedly, but I can always tell when someone has used tubed meat. The gristle is far too much. It also usually has tiny particles of bone. I automatically put the hamburger or whatever I'm eating down when I hit a piece of gristle or bone. I know, it's probably just a weird thing that I do, but I can't finish. It ruins the whole thing. You usually get that in frozen premade hamburger patties, frozen meatballs, tube meat, etc. I know when someone is trying to pass off that stuff. No shade if it's a cost consideration, I totally get that.

Tender Bits of what, exactly? That name sounds like sub-par dog food. This product looks like something that the LiartownUSA guy photoshopped, but I swear it is not. This product has been around since the 70's.

From reading what some people post. I bet a lot of people eat it.

Anyone who looks at a crab or a lobster and thinks "that looks delicious" is someone who deserves to be locked in a psych ward.

And yes, I get they're actually delicious, but they're two of the the least visually-appealing creatures on earth. Crabs are essentially giant spiders with extra armour while lobsters look like giant versions of the already-ugly shrimp, and they both have BIG, MEATY CLAWS. I do want to try lobster some day, (I tried crab claws at a Japanese restaurant and loved the flavour and texture) but I'm scared of ordering it in a restaurant in case it comes dressed in the shell, which would instantly destroy my appetite, and that shit ain't cheap.

Those big meaty claws are awfully tasty.

Lobster is really good but the work to reward ration isn't worth it if you have to "disassemble" the lobster yourself to get to it. If you can get pre disassembled lobster I highly recommend trying it. Just ignore the exoskeleton parts. As long as they don't include the gross gut parts from the middle of the lobster it will be fine!

Don't get that shit, it's invariably bad. Get it from where you know what you're getting is ground from a single cut, not bullshit from all over the planet.

Lobster is really good but the work to reward ration isn't worth it if you have to "disassemble" the lobster yourself to get to it.

If you have the proper tools that's most of the fun though. It's just really nice to smash up an entire hard shelled creature with little hammers and pincers, eat every single edible part of it after dipping it in garlic butter, then eat another. And just keep doing that until done. It just feels really carnivorous.

I used to buy those at Walmart and I thought it was pretty good. I stopped buying their clear packaged ground beef after I found a really long hair in it.

Was it a human hair? We had a scandal in the UK a few years back when it was found supermarkets had been selling horse meat mixed in with ground beef. No idea how that happened in their supply chain. It was a huge issue for Jews and Muslims who'd been eating something labelled kosher or halal that actually had a one-toed animal in it, not split hooves, really if the supply chain and ingredients list is that fucked I think that's the least of your worries, you don't know what else could've got in if horse is there. I was just reminded of that and thinking horses have long hair too.
