I'm of the opinion they don't exist when compared to the the absolute best the cinema world has to offer, but I want to be proven wrong. Post any good black movies you think exist in this thread.

For the record Moonlight is not a good movie. Broken Circle Breakdown, Lust Caution, Terms of Endearment, Casablanca, OldBoy(korean), Goodfellas(Casino/The Irishman), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Magnificent 7(original), 7 Samurai, Alien, ect are good movies.

Edit: Clarification - For the purposes of this thread a movie qualifies as "black" if the writer or director that is black, if the lead is black, if the main cast is black, or if the story deals with "black" issues. Black in this thread is not limited to America. A movie does not qualify because a supporting actor is black.

Example of films qualify: Shame(2011) - Steve McQueen directed it, Love & Basketball, Any Denzel movie, Guess Who's coming to Dinner, Dope.

Movies that don't qualify: Alien, Se7en, Lethal Weapon, Transformers.

Thank you all for the reccomendations! Continue to add anymore you think of!

A Low Down Dirty Shame is a pretty entertaining crime thriller.

Black Dynamite is a hilarious spoof of the blaxploitation genre.

What exactly is meant by "black"? I.e. how much of the cast has to be black? Just the main cast?
Excellent question! Director or writer being black qualifies. Lead/protaganist being black qualifies as well as if it is a "black" story.

Ex. Top 5 is a "black" movie even though its story isn't necessarily "black". Dope is a "black: movie even though the writer was jewish/white the director wasnt black and the story was more outside vs black imo.

Basically if you think it qualifies as "black" it probably does. Just dont put in any of the Alien movies because they had black actors in the supporting cast.

Black lead actor qualifies?

Man On Fire.

I was going to mention that although I'm not totally sure it counts, as I think Denzel is the only black cast member and him being black isn't really relevant to the story, but I suppose it's close enough and it's also a very good movie.

Excellent question! Director or writer being black qualifies.

So The Big Hit would indeed qualify? That's good because like I said, it's a hilarious and very entertaining movie.

If I'm pickin up what you're puttin down... seeing as I grew up half nibba and watching BET sometimes, the more "highly regarded" niggo movies would be something like:

Boyz N The Hood
Set It Off
Menace II Society
New Jack City
House Party
Soul Food
Friday

Some of those are off top, but if you just search up black 90's movies you'll get a good idea. There's a bunch. For someone looking for classic movies the likes of what you're typically used to tho (think a top 100 imdb list), and I'm not trying to be funny or an asshole because I like some of them, but stay away from black films. They typically touch on ghetto shit, something like Soul Food maybe being the exception... but even then, eh. It's culture specific shit at the end of the day, so expect lots of gang banging, death, and woe is me I grew up black shit.

The Friday movies. It's one of the rare times when you'll see blacks have any self-deprecating humor, while also taking a few good and fair shots at other groups.

Soundtrack was pretty good too.

Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood is a pretty good movie. It's probably best watched with the context of 90s gangster movies in mind, but I enjoyed it without ever having watched those.
