Bob is a visual person, everything is all about looks to him. His favorite movies are ones that are light on story but very heavy on the visuals. Stuff like the MCU or Mulan remake where stuff is constantly happening on screen, where cgi explosions and highly choreographed fights are the main selling points. The action scenes in those kinds of films are pretty impressive at times, but its all style no substance. There is no reason to care about the action scenes because the characters act in ways that take you out of the story; either they are too jokey during supposed times of crisis or are so overpowered and devoid of personality you don't really care what happens to them, but hey that laser fight scene was cool amiright? At their worst those films are nothing but a bunch of colors on screen but Bob loves them because they look cool.

A week or two ago he was posting pictures of Singapore's airport saying people should emulate them, not realizing or caring that Singapore has a very authoritarian government and having an impressive looking airport isn't worth the loss of freedom. Its a distraction from the problems at the core of their society, meant to show how advanced their country is just look the other way when you get fined 500 dollars for littering or caned for jaywalking. To him the future needs to psychically change how society looks to show we have made progress, its like his view of evolution and changing is pokemon or something whereas things change they physically get bigger and better. Even though your cell phone has more computing power than the biggest supercomputer from 1969 unless it has pylons emitting electricity from it then its not a visual representation of the future.

Like you said our current world has achieved a lot of what Bob wants out of the SUPERIOR FUTURE but in a more efficient way. One of the biggest reason why all those doomsday scenarios people have put out over the years like Malthusian collapse, Peak Oil, and Climate Change drowning New York by 2010 is because we get more efficient with technology and use less resources. Society has progressed over the last 50 years because the auto industry has created more efficient engines for buses that use less gas than before and has experimented with hybrid vehicles using renewable fuels, not because it put a shiny looking monorail that looks cool but can only go from point A to point B. The worlds universities may not be awesome looking Art Deco buildings made of glass with spires, they're a bunch of brick and mortar buildings but they can instantly communicate with sister university's across the world and your student email grants you access to knowledge from hundreds of library's for free. I know I live in a sort-of superior future compared to my Dad because when he was in college he was still using an abacus and cardboard punch cards while I was using the calculator on my cell phone between quick sessions of Candy Crush and Cookie Clicker.

As cool looking as these buildings are they are not a real representation of mankind's scientific and technological progress but Bob because of his limited mental capacity thinks a visual change to society is indicative of change and progress.
