I think Dobson has a lot of empathy. I mean, its tough to say, but it seems like the original point of "So You're a Cartoonist" was to offer advice to young people who want to become artists. (Regardless how misguided or unsure those strips and arcs could get.)

Sure, but that's a sign of kindness (theoretically), not empathy. You can be kind without being empathetic, and you can be empathetic without being kind (although it'd be stressful). Dobson presumably genuinely intended to help other cartoonists, but he failed to realise that his day-to-day struggles were not necessarily relevant to anybody else. He either didn't see the need to ask himself "Sure, this is a big deal to me, but will anyone else care?", or he did and the answer was always "OF COURSE THEY WILL!". Either way, a failure of empathy.

You're right, Dobson has empathy for people who agree with him, but that's not saying much. The real test of empathy is whether you can apply it to people you disagree with, or even to people who are actively trying to harm you. Dobson doesn't. He thinks everybody who dislikes him dislikes him because he's a fearless crusader for social justice. In actual fact, Dobson-hate is largely apolitical - it's very easy to criticise him from the left, as even a cursory scan of this thread will show. But he's unable to realise this, because his attempts to get inside his detractors' heads are motivated by his need to paint himself in the best possible light, not by a genuine wish or need to see things from their point of view.

The hell? He seriously told her that?

Dobson doesn't feel anything towards anyone that won't benefit him in some way. Either to fit in or for his own tastes. Dobson feels for Dobson.

Yeah, then later he literally came out and claimed "DUDE IT WAS A PRANK"
Y'know, even if it was a joke, it's in really fucking poor taste and I hope Zelda didn't see it

Yeah and you just know if somebody had done the same to him in that situation he would have lost his shit (which would be understandable, but yeah)

(Regardless how misguided or unsure those strips and arcs could get.) His deviantart journals always felt genuine and earnest - like he was eager to help people, excessively so. I think newer journals still feel that way. (However angry, convoluted, depressed, desperate, and delusional they often are nowadays.)

Empathy involves actually being able to feel the emotions of others.

Not just claiming you can.

Dobson just assumes everyone thinks the exact same way he does and then melts down if they point out that they don't.

Yeah, and I read his "So You're a Cartoonist" series as less of a helping hand and more like Clients From Hell. For anyone unfamiliar with CFH, or similar, it's a place where people can whine about annoying clients. You know - the client who asks that you put a security sensitive system outside the firewall so he can log in to it from his phone from random Wi-Fi spots when he's out and about, because he gets irritated when he has to launch a VPN session to get in. I never saw anything of educational value in Dobson's strip. Maybe I couldn't see the good ones for the pile of poor jokes and live-blogging of stuff that's annoying him on a daily basis?

Maybe we are about to see the long-predicted volte face by Dobson from tryhard SJW to tryhard MRA.

Probably not, but it is pretty telling that he goes from bragging about his empathy to LOL SHE'S FAT in the space of 24 hours.

This just in: Dobson hates fatties. In other news, pot calls kettle black. More details at 11.

Btw Chunk was played by Jeff Cohen who is actually pretty hot these days, so I'm calling two counts of douche-nannigans.

Nonono, he's still the good guy!

See, in high school a fat kid ate lunch next to him and didn't smell particularly great in what was obviously an attempt to ruin lunchtime forever and now fatties are the scum of the earth along with art teachers, DA commentors, jocks, his fans and Zelda Williams.

You're one to talk, Dobson. At least Melissa McCarthy seems fun to hang out with.

I've been looking up info about her (I never follow actors) and she seems really cool. Female comedians are rare as are overweight actresses in major roles, so she has a lot of accomplishments. Apparently she's also releasing a clothing line for plus size women.

Oh, and she's a feminist. Whoops. ;)

He hates fatties? Then why does he get off on women being inflated?

What a weird fetish.
