I am genuinely struggling to understand why ralph thinks he can afford a child right now.
Obvious environmental and personality concerns aside, he isn't making any god damn money. $50k in the bank is going to be burned thru really fucking fast by clothing, healthcare, food, etc. The only way I see him affording it is if they go on welfare and both work full time, on opposite shifts so that someone is with the kid. Let's be honest, Momma Gunt isn't up to watching the kid when she has one foot in the grave.
If he didn't feel like a parasite already, welfare will cement that in the view of literally everyone, himself included. That, combined with the stress of working opposite shifts with someone you're supposed to love and raise a child with? Hell, better people than the gunt have tried that and failed.
If their house is actually rented, Vickers would be doing them a financial kindness buying it and letting them stay in it. One that neither ralph or faith deserve at this point, and I'm pretty sure Vickers isn't going to offer.
As I said, other glaring concerns aside, there's no way you can look at your own life in that kind of state and say "yeah I'm ready for a kid." Am I missing something that makes ralph a financially viable parent?
The pregnancy is a lie. It has to be.
