Why the fuck do brits use this faggy "stone" measurement for weight? I know it's autistic but I get extremely annoyed whenever I have to read about how many "stones" someone weighs, whatever the fuck that means. I can understand pounds and kilograms, but NO ONE uses "stones".

Because back in the day, when all material goods (especially metals) were considerably more expensive and hard to get than today, people literally used standardized "stones" as units of measuring weight. Today you will only find weigh-stones in museums, because literally nobody uses actual stones as official weights anymore -- the measuring weights you'll find on scales in places ranging from butcher shops to science labs to fatphobic doctor's offices are usually made either of metal or one of those ultradense and ultramodern ceramic compounds -- but, presumably, even after the British government (and scientists) abandoned literal rock stones as measuring tools, the British people still kept the word "stone" in their everyday language to describe how much a person weighs.

You can argue whether this is a quaint bit of linguistic tradition or stupid hidebound bullshit from the Brits -- but I'll note that despite their casual use of "stone" to describe how much a person weighs, the Brits (like almost the entire rest of the world) otherwise use the metric system, an eminently sensible and rational measuring system where everything -- mass, weight, distance, volume, land allotments, anything -- is based on units of ten.

If you want to get MOTI over a ridiculous, old-fashioned, non-intuitive and hard to remember system, I'd recommend the customary or "imperial system," which the British (and all the rest of Europe and Australia and South America and all of Africa except Liberia and all of Asia except Burma) were smart enough to abandon a couple centuries ago, but the United States stubbornly clings to a version of it today. Let's see: for dry weight (or people) it's 16 ounces to a pound and 2,000 pounds to a ton, but for liquid weight it's 16 ounces in a pint, 2 pints in a quart, 4 quarts in a gallon and 63.00021 gallons to a hogshead barrel. (I had to Google that last one.) Then, for distances, you've got 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 1,760 yards (or 5,280 feet) in a mile, and I don't remember and don't feel like looking up how many square feet are in an acre and how many acres in a square mile. Big numbers for both, though.

IMO, so long as the US (and Burma and Liberia) stick to their customary version of the imperial system to measure literally everything, the Brits with their metric system plus "stones" for a person's weight have nothing to feel bad about.

As a blessed faggy Brit I find I can work easily in lbs, stones or kg for weight. One stone is 14lb, therefore ten stone = 140lb , twenty stone = 280lb a small child can learn and remember that, same as you can learn any other metric easily, like one kg = 2.2 lbs and you can convert about if you have a brain and can do junior school arithmetic. Why is it so difficult? It's just like there are different words commonly used in English in different languages based on geography and historical changes, such as the British 'handbag'' and US 'purse' or 'pocketbook'. Or 'lift' and 'elevator'. Or 'aubergine' and 'eggplant'. Or 'trainers'(British) 'runners' (Australian) or 'sneakers' (USA).

It's not like any of this is actually confounding unless you have what I'll politely call 'learning difficulties'. It's like asking why people in different countries are so stupid and backward for speaking a language you can't be arsed to learn and then calling them dumb when you can only speak one and they can speak theirs, yours, and another.

I can also work in inches for dressmaking/bra/clothing sizes or cm and metres for other household measurements. It always best if you know more than one on an interconnected workd, just like it's better to understand other languages.

The only measurement system I think is useless is the US cup system for baking, as volumetric measurements are hideously inaccurate when dealing with solid as opposed to liquid foodstuffs for obvious reasons.

Look, my faggy nation aside, think we can all at least agree that the women in this thread have eaten themselves to such a state they really deserve to only be measured in terms of giant lumpy rocks. None of your neat little sensible pound increments.

Anna weighs three and a half sunbleached Utah boulders, butter side up.

Becka weighs two small Highland crags, an English civil war cannonball, and a small bag of pebbles.

Ash weighs two Ulurus and a large shoebox of gravel.

Jay is simply a vast conglomerate of unwholesome proportions and unknown composition who will pose a major environmental concern in the event she rolls downhill or into the sea.

Goddamn, but these people are committed to false dichotomies, aren't they? "You can either stay home and eat all day and yourself into enormous weight gain during this pandemic, or you can go out, maskless, into large crowds and deliberately cough in old ladies' faces. THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION."

Literally NOBODY says that weight gain, especially when you're stuck indoors all day, makes you a bad person or means you have sinned. It merely means you ate and drank more calories than your body burned off.

Why are they using hyper-religious language about weight gain anyway? (I mean, I personally do believe gluttony is a sin and that people almost always live healthier, happier lives when they try to avoid flagrantly sinful behaviors; it's OK to acknowledge when we do shit that fucks up our health [physical, mental, or spiritual] and then choose to go another way.) But these people glom on to FA zealotry and turn it into a golden calf and then get angry when other people tell them that bingeing every day during a pandemic probably isn't a great idea and that moderation is always an option, even if we all slip up on occasion. It's beyond annoying, As has been pointed out, no one is saying those who gained weight during the lockdowns is a bad, an EVIL person. But, it's easy enough to have packed on a few pounds & many who did are a little bemused as they're not in the habit of gaining extra weight for whatever reason. Sure, the ads are from companies looking to make money from various diet aids, (diet culture) but the aforementioned who don't have a whole lot to lose can benefit if they follow whatever program they either read up about or buy.

Heart sinking, knots in stomach, days being ruined by hearing or possibly reading such ads... anybody who reacts that strongly either has more than 10-20 lbs. to lose or KNOWS their overall health would be much better if they dropped the weight. Those feelings are often associated with guilt; not just depression.

Yes, those who 'followed the rules', who stayed indoors & presumably less active survived the pandemic & followed the social construct but please... that can be said of the vast majority of people & that doesn't absolve anyone for overall responsibility for their health.

Before CoVD, there was a growing awareness & emphasis on the issues that extra weight can generate & we KNOW obesity is one of the biggest risk factors for a severe bout of CoVD, complications & an increased risk for death. Certainly in my area, family doctors & other practitioners are encouraging people to lose as much extra weight as they can & there are a lot of PSAs telling people obesity is often a chronic illness, can be difficult to control but that help IS available.

If the FA/HAES folks want to ignore that... okay. But to try & make themselves sound like courageous warriors in the face of societal fault finding is just bullshit. Improving your relationship with food & movement, as Bekah calls it, SHOULS encompass a healthier relationship with both & if you're still gaining weight when you're well over what you should be, that relationship still has a lot of work that needs doing.

Because it's a cult. Just follow us and we'll save you from the anxiety you feel about your appearance by making it everyone else's fault. Anyone who criticizes you is trying to take away your salvation.

Anorexics can and do still feel hunger pains. Many revel in it as a signal that they’re “doing well.” The pro-ana sites are filled with girls trading advice on how to ignore hunger pangs, with one literally being “punch yourself in the stomach until you forget you’re hungry.” So shut your fat gob and get on the level of someone who actually understands what anorexia feels like. Sick of these porky little twats whinging that they “used to be anorexic” because off and on they would try silly fad diets or go two whole days without eating, before breaking down in a massive binge.

Most people associate eating with relief from anxiety, but there's a small fraction who are wired the other way; they get anxiety relief from restricting. They're the ones who get anorexia. Just goes to show you that they have no idea what anorexia really is, but they sure as hell have disordered eating and a distorted self-image. It really is impressive to see the levels of mental gymnastics they are capable of.
