I've been following this one for a while, I know I posted about it a ways back. This is the Uber driver who thought it was all a hoax, and when I first posted about it, his wife was just put on a ventilator. She's off it now, because she's dead:
I just wonder how many people he and his wife managed to infect before they had symptoms and got treated.

A Florida taxi driver, who believed false claims that coronavirus was a hoax, has lost his wife to Covid-19.
Brian Lee Hitchens and his wife, Erin, had read claims online that the virus was fabricated, linked to 5G or similar to the flu.
The couple didn't follow health guidance or seek help when they fell ill in early May. Brian recovered but his 46-year-old wife became critically ill and died this month from heart problems linked to the virus.
Brian spoke to the BBC in July as part of an investigation into the human cost of coronavirus misinformation. At the time, his wife was on a ventilator in hospital.
Deadly conspiracy theories
Erin, a pastor in Florida, had existing health problems - she suffered from asthma and a sleeping disorder.
Her husband explained that the couple did not follow health guidance at the start of the pandemic because of the false claims they had seen online.
Brian continued to work as a taxi driver and to collect his wife's medicine without observing social distancing rules or wearing a mask.
They had also failed to seek help as soon as possible when they fell ill in May and were both subsequently diagnosed with Covid-19.

Brian told BBC News that he "wished [he'd] listened from the beginning" and hoped his wife would forgive him.
"This is a real virus that affects people differently. I can't change the past. I can only live in today and make better choices for the future," Brian explained.
"She's no longer suffering, but in peace. I go through times missing her, but I know she's in a better place."
'This thing is real'
Brian said he and his wife didn't have one firm belief about Covid-19. Instead, they switched between thinking the virus was a hoax, linked to 5G technology, or a real, but mild ailment. They came across these theories on Facebook.
"We thought the government was using it to distract us," Brian explained, "or it was to do with 5G."
But after the couple fell ill with the virus in May, Brian took to Facebook in a viral post to explain that he'd been misled by what he'd seen online about the virus.
"If you have to go out please use wisdom and don't be foolish like I was so the same thing won't happen to you like it happened to me and my wife," he wrote.

Doctors and experts have warned that the potential for indirect harm caused by rumours, conspiracy theories and bad health information online remains huge - especially as anti-vaccination conspiracies are being spread on social media.
While social media companies have made attempts to tackle misinformation about coronavirus on their platforms, critics argue that more needs to be done in the coming months.
A Facebook spokesperson told the BBC: "We don't allow harmful misinformation on our platforms and between April and June we removed more than seven million pieces of harmful Covid-19 misinformation, including claims relating to false cures or suggestions that social distancing is ineffective."

I don't even think it's a right wing thing as much as a Trump/Q/schizo 5g thing. I know enough right wing people who are wearing masks and washing their hands, staying home, to know it's just a subset of that group that's really gone berserk.
I'm pretty far left, so I don't have a lot of direct insight into it, but it seems really self-destructive. Any idea why they've lost their shit over this? Are they just stir crazy like everyone else and this is their version of it?

Because of the (mostly Democratic) governors of the States who shut down their economies because Trump said not to. There. That's the reason. This comes after people like DeBlasio, Schumer, and Pelosi told people to go OUT as much as possible to keep the economy afloat. Their shuttering the economies led to massive job losses and the closure of businesses, while they also didn't give a fuck about the race riots where the rioters weren't wearing masks, except oddly enough for those wearing scarves around their faces in the Antifa red and black.
Basically, it has to do with the complete lack of respect the various Democratic State governments have because of their initial handling of the epidemic. Blame Trump all you want, but it wasn't Trump (at least in the beginning) telling people to go out and celebrate the Lunar New Year like Pelosi did.

As though the arbitrary concept of "rights" is any protection against anything. These morons should go to, say, Siberia and then tell the temperature about your "right to not wear a jacket" or how "not everyone believes the narrative around thermal underwear". If you told these people they absolutely must breathe air, by law, they'd stomp around purple faced, waving poorly spelled placards until they passed out. We should stop trying to save the stupid and when their stupidity trips them, leave them where they fall.
Absolutely correct, the Dems completely fucked the handling of this (as they do with almost anything they touch) but in fairness so did Trump. He's been hoist by his own petard by ignoring this and pretending it was a storm in a teacup until it became clear he couldn't anymore. He's at least 50% of the problem, at a governmental level. Too literally stupid to know what he's talking about, too proud to take advice from the people who do. Can't wait to see the back of him and get someone with a treble digit IQ (and/or an ego that isn't made of sugar glass) at the head of the Republicans.

There are few people worthy of respect on either side. Modern politics is a culture of self-aggrandisement and ass-covering and the coof crisis has brought that sharply into focus. If America (or the UK, for that matter) ended up with an actually honest, moral government/political leader, they'd shit themselves as the gravy train derailed. It seems even more apparent than usual at the moment purely because the leaders of both countries are cartoon caricatures of venal self-interest and mistaken assumption of competence.
