SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A pair of new statues in South Korea of a man kneeling in front of a girl symbolizing a victim of sexual slavery by Japan’s wartime military is the latest subject of diplomatic sensitivity between the countries, with Tokyo’s government spokesperson questioning whether the male figure represents the Japanese prime minister.

Kim Chang-ryeol, owner of a botanic garden in the mountain town of Pyeongchang, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he canceled an unveiling ceremony for the bronze statues that was to take place on Aug. 10 because of what he described as unwanted controversy.

Kim said the statues were his idea, but that he didn’t specifically intend the male figure to be Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Since his inauguration in 2012, Abe has stoked anger among South Koreans over his nationalistic stance on Japan’s wartime past and his demands that South Korea remove similar statues symbolizing sexual slavery victims in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul and other sites.

But the statues at Kim’s garden also drew criticism among some South Koreans, who described them as tacky or excessively provocative on social media. Kim defended the statues, saying they reflect his wish for the countries to resolve their conflicts over history. He didn’t expect the statues to trigger political debates.

“The man could be Abe and also couldn’t be Abe,” said Kim, who will keep the statues at his garden. “The man represents anyone in a position of responsibility who could sincerely apologize to the victims of sexual slavery, now or in the future. It could even be the girl’s father. ... That’s why the statues were named ‘Eternal Atonement.’’’

Relations between South Korea and Japan sank to their lowest point in decades last year as they allowed their decades-long disputes over wartime history to spill over into issues related to trade and military cooperation.

During a briefing in Tokyo, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said it would be unacceptable under “international courtesy” if the statues’ male figure did indeed represent Abe.

“I think such a thing is unforgivable under international courtesy,” Suga said.

Kim In-chul, South Korea’s foreign ministry spokesperson, acknowledged that countries should consider “international comity” in regard to foreign heads of state, but he didn’t provide a clear answer when asked whether private citizens should be asked to follow such practices.

Disputes over sex slaves are a legacy of Japan’s 1910-45 colonial occupation of the Korean Peninsula. Historians say tens of thousands of women from around Asia, many of them Korean, were sent to front-line military brothels to provide sex to Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Under South Korea’s previous conservative government, the countries attempted to settle the dispute over sexual slavery in a 2015 agreement for Tokyo to provide 1 billion yen ($9 million) to a Seoul-based foundation to help support victims.

The deal was hugely unpopular in South Korea, where many people criticized their government for settling for too little and accused Tokyo of attempting to silence the victims with money. The liberal government of current South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who took office in 2017, took steps to dissolve the foundation, saying the deal lacked legitimacy because officials failed to properly communicate with the victims before reaching it.

I don't fucking get it. Is this guy trying to imply the Japs were simps for the chicks they raped?

There's significance to the guy being on his knees, but I guess I'm too round-eye to understand this next level passive-aggressive shit.

The guy who own the park and the statues said that the statuses are the symbol of his hope in regard of the dissolution of the diplomatic tension in between the 2 countries.

ie He want to tell Jap let's be friends, but acknowledge all your fuckup shit you done in the WW2 first.

edit: missed a word.

The Japanese run faster from acknowledging their war crimes in WWII than a deadbeat dad running out the house to get milk.
There was a video where young Japanese were asked why they put the manji at the end of text messages and what they thought of it. It's basically something trendy. When confronted with the western perception of the Swastika, they had no idea who or what Hitler was and what he did.

Well fyi, the manji is a sign originated from buddism and have the meaning of happiness.

Also Manji has the same pronunciation as "really(マジ)" in Moonspeak. So they use it as a kawaii abbreviation of that. There's nothing malicious in that regard.

However, the Jap erasing their part in WW2, what Hitler and the Swastika is are true and inexcusable.

Bowing on your knees for forgiveness is the ultimate form of humiliation

It symbolizes the apology that has never happened, at least in their view.

Japan should construct an identical pair of statues, but with the comfort woman statue bending over in front of the jap statue instead in order to be historically accurate

Okay yeah we know Japan did absolutely fucked shit to everyone they fought in WW2. Bataan death march, rape of Nanjing, etc. But can we please focus on China? The actual pressing threat?

Also Unit 731. Not sure what scientific discovery they were hoping to make by injecting horse urine directly into their subjects' veins.

Light hearted whimsy over mass rape aside, I think Japan's issues surrounding what it did during WW2 stem almost entirely from the schizophrenic nature of Japan's government during that era, with a civilian government fancying itself as an enlightened European style colonial empire that would uplift its colonial subjects while profiting from their markets and resources being utterly overruled and straight up blackmailed into compliance by an entirely independent military government that was infested at the lower-mid levels with obsessive bushido fanboys who had gone full reverse-weeb with the racist ultranationalism gaining traction in europe.

By the 1930s the military had devolved into what was effectively one gigantic ISIS style army of intentionally brutalised fanatics and intentionally demagogic officers who were desperate for any excuse to start their holy war against absolutely everyone they decided was a threat to their power, be they external foreign powers with land and resources they wanted or internal civilian or military government officials deemed to oppose escalating tensions, and their wannabe fascist bushido schtick made sure that those in charge saw absolutely zero issue with inflicting all manner of atrocities against enemy civilians and captured soldiers who had "dishonoured themselves" by being captured, especially since it allowed their soldiers to blow off steam and maintain some pretence of discipline.

This is why you had the disconnect of japan's "co prosperity sphere" schtick about liberating and saving asians from european colonialism which was the narrative spread to the citizens of japan and was believed even within the halls of civilian government, and the absolute fucking barbarism of japanese soldiers and officers the moment they encountered said asians on the field, which contrasts with germany's far more explicit and unified narrative of violently annexing its lebensraum, enslaving the inhabitants, and exterminating them over a generation through hunger and forced labour.

Since the military side of Imperial Japan's government was entirely erased after the war though the ones who wound up taking the continued blame for its atrocities in the decades after the war was the civilian government, which chafed at this since as far as the civilian government was concerned it had been waging a perfectly moral and just war for the benefit of all asians and thus there is nothing to apologise for, which combined with the continued societal reverence shown towards the dead soldiers and commanders who carried that shit out has ensured that the issue has remained unresolved one way or another since nobody wants to take the heat for pushing for total denial/justification or for wholesale and official government admittance and apology.

Lol like anyone can tell one slant apart from another anyway

I take it you failed in school. Consider this playing out back then.

"Officer Rice Paddy, what would happen if we injected horse piss into a person? Would they become really strong like a horse or would they die in agony?"

*Injects Piss*

"Officer Jackie Chan, the subject died. Try pig piss, see what that does."

See, that's how science works. You have a question, you run a test, and you figure out if it's a good idea to test demonic medical experiments on living human beings. I mean I am of course joking, but it's not that far from the truth a lot of the time.

In the U.S. you tear down statues to cause drama, in Korea you build statues to cause drama.

Gonna lol if Kim Chang-ryeol has Soros connections.
