I have no clue who they are. Will learning what happened to them ruin my day?

Here's my guess, based on the image, I am reminded of those two chicks that went to Morocco to travel around and met a really, really painful and disturbing end at the hands of some cruel locals.

3 upper middle class white women went mountain hiking in Africa, Arabia, India or a similar place, last known contact to their friends and families is a tweet about how nice and hospitable everybody is in [whatever shithole they went to] and how rumors about the natives being violent, rapey savages are entirely fabricated by DRRRRUUUUMPF and how everyone should go there for vacation. A week later, their mutilated bodies are found. The heads of two of the women are cut off and stuck in spikes, the third head is missing. All orifices show signs of massive trauma caused by forced insertion of jagged objects while the women were still alive. Blunt trauma to the abdomen, chest and limbs, all breasts are either cut off or show marks of human teeth, but there are too many different to match them up to a single individual. Semen of at least 15 people were found all over and inside their bodies. Death was caused by 12-24 hours of exposure after the initial attack.
Someone used the phone of one of the women to send the family a picture of all this.

But there were these two female hikers in Morocco that got killed by local IS-militants (I think), that were gangraped, tortured and killed and one of the attackers used one of their phones to send images of the girls' heads to their mothers. It was some really fucking gruesome shit.
Google has a couple links to articles relating to this depressing thing and frankly, I don't really feel like reading up on that stuff again, cause it was that fucking gruesome and cruel.

There was also a story about some German girl who went to join ISIS and ended up being used as a sex slave for a while and was eventually executed when she tried to escape. I also read a similar story about some random other white girl who went on a long hiking expedition through the middle east, with the intent to prove that it was safe, and guess what happened.

I mean, I felt bad for them dying in such a horrible way, but a small part of me was relieved it wasn't a headline like what you describe above.
