We're reaching a point where I am more inclined to celebrate a historical figure, even knowing he was involved in some really bad shit, just cause this wanton destruction of statues is making me so mad.
I am starting to wonder, why I shouldn't go "Yeah, slavery was really fucking bad and this guy killed a lot of people for petty reasons, but holy shit, he was really fucking good at it and he did some pretty amazing shit that our nation nowadays builds upon."
The western world is the only area on earth that feels a need to apologize for winning in a war hundreds of years ago... Yeah, sucks to be native American and being pushed aside by "immigrants", but holy shit, why should white people in the US not be proud of a history of conquering? I can't put it into words properly, but I think you get what I mean.
The short and less poetic version might sound something like this: "Stop your bitching, you lost hundreds of years ago. Be happy the victors were nice enough not to eradicate your people entirely".
