Multiple Sega Happenings will Revealed to be Happening - It's apparently hardware related

Video game companies making big announcements and promises these days is like losing your virginity in the modern day. It's built up to where you can hardly wait for it but then when it actually happens, it's one big blob of disappointment that leaves you depressed and empty inside and out in more ways than one.

There were 16 games released for the 3DS Virtual Console, so that should give you an idea of what we'll see on this:

This thing is way too small and I don't think I'm alone in saying I would have rather had a Nomad 2, but whatever, I guess it'll be fine for the price.

Aside from the games others have mentioned, the first Phantasy Star game was released on the GG. And of course there were plenty of Sonic games, including some oddities that didn't have a Genesis equivalent like Sonic Drift, a forward-scrolling racer that predates Sonic R.

I must be the only one who liked the size of the game gear. Easy to hold, easy to use, easy to see screen... just not something you could take with you, which killed it. This though... who the hell is going to be able to play anything on something so freaking tiny?

I’m ashamed to admit that I wouldn’t mind getting the one with the three Shining Force games.
Yeah I already have close to a dozen of these mini consoles. If they make the Game Gear mini lineup attractive enough I'll get one.

Especially if they include the Game gear Panzer Dragoon game.

and supposedly the colored plastic is somewhat transparent, so if it turns out to be shit I can see the guts in, it's now a must buy.

I mean when was a console or handheld of any type last released with transparent plastic, we're looking at Gameboy Advance and N64.

There was that extremely limited version of PS4 that was released in transparent blue with matching controller, but it's like a transparent navy blue which means you can't really see inside.

It's also being released for 50 bucks, the last Game Gear collection we got in physical from was part of Sonic Mega Collection+. So it's not really asking all that much if this was instead released on a disc collection rather than a stand alone mini console.

A fucking Game Gear.

does gamegear even have good games outside the first sonic and a alex the kidd?
My question is, why Game Gear only? Why not have Sega Master System games in there too? They practically use the same or at least similar enough hardware.

The SMS/GG versions of Sonic are awful compared to the genesis games (Except for Tails's Adventure, but that's because it's completely different from every other sonic game). Why not just remake them entirely if you want to do anything about them?

All the good Master System games had Game gear ports in some territories, it's not out of the question.

This could be like the TG16 mini where they include games from multiple regions.

I know you guys are speculating what games are in them, prepare to be dissapointed. Each of the four colors come with four, and only four, games, and all entirely different for each one:

Black:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Puyo Puyo Tsuu
OutRun
Royal Stone

Blue:
Sonic & Tails
Gunstar Heroes
Sylvan Tale
Baku Baku

Yellow:
Shining Force Gaiden
Shining Force Gaiden II
Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux

Red:
Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible
Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
Shinobi
Columns

A decent amount of Japan-only titles, so even if they DID come west I imagine they'd be changed up quite heavily.

Additionally, there is an accessory that makes the screen bigger that is sold separately(Would need it with all of those RPGs on a few of them).

And I just don’t see Sega putting the effort into paying for translations. I guess they could offer some money for fan translations already out there.

if it wasnt for the horrible ear-grating sound emulation, Sega @games portable would be better than this, it got Sega MegaDrive, MasterSystem and GameGear games in it

Ok, where'd you come from? You've been dead for years. Maybe KatsuKitty'll come back too.

They all seem to have variety. We got puzzle games, platformers, rpgs, but we can't have much since we only have 16 games to choose from. The NES Mini had 30 games, this one barely makes up half of it with all of them put together.

The Japan only titles getting translated for the first time sounds interesting, but I don't know if it's worth 200+ dollars.

Those things suck. Aside from the audio, the resolution of the screen doesn't match up with the output resolution of a Genesis very well and they scale it up by duplicating some rows and columns of pixels - it's hard to describe, but also hard to ignore once you notice it. That D-pad is crappy as well. I wouldn't recommend one of these at any price.

The game gear mini is supposedly being made by the same people who put out the much superior and better genesis mini that had Castlevania on it as well as a few Disney games and the unreleased genesis megaman and Tetris games.

So I'm really expecting to see some really weird and interesting shit on there. They'll probably even bother translating a few things as well.

There's also still a chance that you can connect it to the big screen to play. It's roughly the same size as the GBA Micro, so putting in an hdmi port or something is not impossible.

I posted what games are on each version of the system, 4 different games for each color, 16 total but it would cost around $200 to get them all four variants. Plus it seems that instead of any TV connectivity you get a shitty attachment that makes the screen look slightly bigger(that is sold separately)

This thing is way too small

This is my main concern. The original gamegear screen took up like 25% of the system since it was bulky as hell, and since most of the games on it were Master System ports, the resolution of those games were already cut for Game Gear since they just ZOOMED in everything by like 50% (meaning in Sonic games you couldn't really see what was coming your way like you could with the master system versions, so death and ring loss were inevitable.)

The games that I actually want would be the Last Bible ones and Shining Force.

But they also come on the worst colors.

Also here's Sega's future plans

And we are once again reminded why Sega got out of the console business.
Because making a console is difficult and expensive and all the profit is in software anyways, so why not let other companies take the hit of developing and selling hardware for a loss? They could maybe try doing the Nintendo thing, using innovative features and exclusive properties to be able to get away with making cheaper, less-powerful hardware which can be sold for a profit, but that's easier said than done; even if they decide to do it, they'd be playing catch-up to build (or contract out to) a new engineering team and hoping they know what they're doing. I couldn't finish the article because the blind insistence of the interviewer that Sega make a new console for some reason was cringey.

You can find articles about the troubles Sega had in the mid-to-late '90s which ultimately led to them exiting the hardware business. It's a pretty interesting story. There were powerful egos both in the Japan and American sides of the company which often butted heads and resulted in things like the development and marketing of the 32X, a 32-bit add-on which allowed the Genesis to play more powerful games but was a tough sell when the more powerful Saturn and PlayStation were around the corner, and the fact that the Saturn's US launch date was moved up by several months to beat the PlayStation's, but that meant that several of the games that would have been launch titles weren't ready yet, and while Virtua Fighter was rushed to release at the new launch date and should have been a system seller, that rush meant it had comical visual glitches. Just a whole bunch of really boneheaded and short-sided decisions. They got their act together for the release of the Dreamcast, but it was released while the more powerful PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube were on the horizon… and then the copy protection scheme got hacked such that it was possible to write copies of Dreamcast games to standard CD-R discs around the time that both CD burners and high-speed internet was becoming common in peoples' homes, offices, and campuses, so even making a profit on software was starting to look like less of a sure thing.

Sega would have to be crazy to try to get back into the hardware biz again. (Of course I'm not counting emulation boxes like this GG Micro or the Genesis Mini.)

That and they did stupid stuff like the Sega CD and how they released the Sega Saturn.
