US U.S. birth rate hits a 35-year low - Bad news for all you Kiwis out there who want to find a mate and procreate

The number of children born in the United States has hit its lowest level in 35 years, according to new federal data, as demographers worry that a baby bust that emerged after the Great Recession is becoming permanent.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report Wednesday that 3.7 million children were born in the U.S. last year, down 1 percent from 2018 and the lowest total number of births since 1985.

Birth rates dropped among women of virtually every age and race group, though they rose among women in their early 40s, the CDC found. Birth rates among teenagers dropped substantially, hitting record lows. The rate of teenagers giving birth has dropped by a whopping 60 percent since 2007, and by 73 percent since 1991.

Since the recession, the birth rate has risen year-over-year only once, in 2014. Now, demographers tracking the declining birth rate say the trend is beginning to look like a longer-term pattern.

"The fact that births and fertility continued to decline in 2019 despite the booming economy suggests that this is a permanent shift to a lower fertility regime in the U.S.," said Cheryl Russell, a demographer and contributing editor to the journal American Demographics.

Studies have shown the overall decline in birth rates is being driven by steep drops among Hispanic women and women who do not belong to religious organizations. A 2018 study by the demographer Alicia Munnell at the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College showed the rising number of women who attain college degrees and a shrinking wage gap between women and men are contributing factors, too.

The decline in birth rates is widespread among American women of every racial group. There were fewer births in 2019 among white women, black women, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic women than in 2018, the CDC data shows.

Now, demographers say the birth rate is likely to plunge even more in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic recession accompanying it. Birth rates have historically fallen in times of economic hardship, the data shows.

"Although some have predicted a coronavirus baby boom in 2021, that seems unlikely," Russell said. "It’s more likely that young women will delay becoming pregnant during this time of uncertainty, so we could see a bigger drop in births and fertility rates in 2021."

I thought Catholics don't believe in birth control, though. Least Mormons don't frown down on the use of condoms/safe sex (since albeit married, couples still need to be able to plan ahead even if God provides for their needs).
Mormons are well known for having tons of kids. Only other religious group like it is Muslims. Most Mormons I see around my parts (the Mormon mecca) have like 3-5 kids.

Actually I'm gonna add some additional thoughts. I don't think this is surprising because every single facet of American life has the message DON'T HAVE BABIES.

High school: don't have babies, you don't want to be a teen parent and your baby daddy will abandon you anyway
Church: don't have babies, you and your filthy spawn will be sentenced to hell 5ever, WHORE. Now bend over and take it up the ass from the priest.

Work: don't have babies, you don't get paternity leave/we'll fire you for taking maternity leave, your projects are more important than children and also you're a traitor if you have babies and take time off from work and also if you take time off work than you're a HORRIBLE UNRELIABLE WORKER that isn't PRODUCING ENOUGH.

Social media: don't have babies if you aren't married, single parents only exist to parade their children on social media for ass pats also children are loud and disgusting also that woman totally cheated on you so it isn't even yours/don't bother having a kid because your man will immediately flip his shit screaming that you're a cheating whore and that it isn't his and when he demands the paternity test he'll run crying to reddit after you leave him because he doesn't understand why calling you a cheating whore puts you off him completely even after it comes back that he indeed the father

Dating: don't have babies if you want a viable mate, also if you try to date when you're twenty your partner will refuse to have children and cite his/her "career" as the reason and will say "I want kids after I'm 30." If your partner gets pregnant panic and cry on social media about how your life is over while she runs to the convenience store to get plan b/cry on social media about how your babby daddy is leaving you/cry on social media about you're getting an abortion and he isn't supporting/cry on social media about how she's getting an abortion even after you blocked her and ghosted her and told her you didn't want a kid/cry on social media about how you're getting a paternity test because IT CAN'T POSSIBLY BE YOURS REEEEEEE wait what she got an abortion?! but she never asked me if I could, not that I care because it obviously isn't my kid BUT THE PRINCIPLE OF IT ALL

It's a self enforcing problem. Society has developed a phobia around children and don't want to disrupt their adult lives to have children. Adults don't trust each other enough to have kids together especially if they themselves are the products of a messy divorce.
I also want to mention that Its expensive to have a kid. Shoe0nhead was taking about this on twitter last night. Some guy running for California Congress posted his recepits and it was 46k, after a 9k deduction from his insurance (Its Blue Cross, one of the best in the nation) . They charged this guy and his wife $10 for 600mg of Ibuprofen. You can get 500 200mgb capsules for like $5 at CVS or Walmart. The medical and insurance prices are too damn high!

I mean, its one of many reasons people don't wanna have kids. Not the only one. https://twitter.com/RealSteveCox/status/1263722167893516288

This is not new news, the fertility rate has been declining globally since the 70's. Estimates put the African fertility rate to be a similar number to the rest of the globe by 2050.

In any case, I can't think of a single good reason to have a child in this day and age.

That's definitely true. Americans can't have kids even with our maxed out credit card debt culture. If people really want to tackle fertility than they need to do something about medical costs and the price gouging from medical insurance (insurance companies are the true drivers of what medicine and procedures cost since they are the hospitals and doctors' primary customers, not us).

It's interesting that you would post about Mormons having lots of kids because the Mormon church has one of the best welfare programs in the nation and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. I had a Mormon bandmate in high school and when her father was diagnosed with cancer her family didn't have to pay a cent in medical costs because the Mormon church footed the entire bill on their behalf. Mormons probably have lots of kids because they can afford to.

There's never a good time to have a kid. The Black Plague was a terrible time to have a kid, people still had them. The Dark Ages were a terrible time to have a kid, people still had them. World War 1 was a terrible time to have a kid, people still had them. The post WW2 baby boom is legendary.

Humanity's history is a long car crash where it's a terrible time to have a kid. People still had them. IMO "it's a bad time to have a kid" is an unironic First World Problems excuse.

"Studies have shown the overall decline in birth rates is being driven by steep drops among Hispanic women and women who do not belong to religious organizations. "

So basically this is due to Mexican birthrates dropping down more to the levels of the rest of the nation.

Also athiest libshits having even fewer kids, something I would have guessed would be nearly impossible.

Holy shit is that real? 46k for a normal delivery - that is highway robbery even for a C-Section.

Edit: It's fake. Some lawyer on the thread called him out for BSing and posting the payment list they give to insurance and not the adjustment. He got caught out and didn't respond.

Not as high as 46k but it still is insanely expensive, the average cost of giving birth is around $11,000.

I love when stupid, uninteresting garbage becomes useful because of a really queer situation:

From my uninformed perspective or rather prediction based on observations, the men are hornier than ever while the women are more sexless than ever.

IS THAT RIGHT?

I would attribute it more to fearmongering from female centric media + the fact that men have made absolute assclowns of themselves on social media. Women get most of their news and social interaction from Twitter and Instagram and other spaces and the problem is that social media is saturated with coomers screeching about censorship of titty games, incel posts, and tantruming endlessly about feminazis. Women are heavily risk adverse and they take those posts as What Men Really Think. r/AITA is interesting browse because there are always posters there claiming to be women stating how completely and utterly put off they are by male behavior every time the paternity rights question comes up.

IMO its all a long game played by feminists who want every day women to think that men are violent, argumentative, rapey, and that they only want to beat, murder, oppress, violate, and scream at women for daring to be individuals. And there's always a pack of useful idiots Kramering in to enforce this idea which means a lot of innocent guys who aren't autistic get painted with the same brush because again, women are very risk adverse.

The average American is unfit to raise a child anyway. The average American that has a child too is rarely fit to raise to a child as well. Wish we could enact some sort of mandatory parenting class, but that would probably violate something.

Dude in the thread says it's actually about 4k. Anyway, that guy running for congress was straight up lying. He tried to argue with a few people but shut up quick when the pointed out his nonsense.

Here's my source for what it's worth

"The average cost to have a baby in the US, without complications during delivery, is $10,808 — which can increase to $30,000 when factoring in care provided before and after pregnancy."

The US healthcare system discourages middle/upper-middle class people from having kids. I don't pretend to know why it does this, but it clearly does. The only people who can actually have large families without concern are the absurdly rich and the absurdly poor.

they're going to blame trump for the low birth rate i guarantee it. also births don't mean shit when every border jumper brings their kids. If you took every spic out of my old high school right now it would be only 1/3rd full.

i'd be pissed if i was born right now. the post-gamergate generation will get the same middle finger that the world gave gen-xers except intensified. there is no justification to pandering to a market that is so absurdly small*, and we've been seeing articles about "30 year low births" since 2017, and 2015 in europe. thats why it was used as a reason for more muslims in that john Olivier segment.

*and its especially notable because births were pretty stable in the 80s and 90s, and first half of 2010s, there was a mini-boom during the 2000s, so in terms of market focus, by 2030 no one will give a fuck about children. expect a lot of pandering to young adult trannies though

From the article:

"The cost with insurance reflects the full hospital bill. Actual out-of-pocket costs would be lower and dependent on the coinsurance or copay included in the individual's health insurance plan."

In other words the average cost to the patient is NOT 10,000 dollars. Thats the average total cost that is billed to insurance.

We had the healthiest fertility rates in the western world until the financial crisis. The real killer though is cost of childcare if both parents work.

If you replace the first and last letters of Mormons and Muslims with Gs you get Gormogs and Gusligs.

This is important info, thanks.

Boomers were only capable of teaching their sons to be deleteriously subservient to women and their daughters to be pseudo-bisexual hot chip eating liars, and you wonder why the birth rate's been declining?

I think I agree with the idea that men and women don't trust each other to have kids, but I disagree with broad strokes of your argument.

High school/college: they either teach kids not to have sex (and nothing else) or they teach kids how to have "safe sex". Issue is that in either case, they're not actually teaching them the gravity of sex-- it's either "don't have sex because Jesus will be sad and all the cool kids aren't getting laid" or "here's some simple tools you can use to eliminate the chance of you having a child" in the same curriculum where they teach children about STDs. Especially when they get to college, it's not that they're not having sex-- it's that they're not reproducing, and they have various tools at their disposal to decouple the enjoyment of sex from its gravity.

Church: Churchgoers are either elderly and married or young and married.

Or actual children.

The bachelor(ette, especially) is an anomaly in any given congregation. At any rate, they're not discouraging their young to have children-- they're discouraging their young to have sex outside of marriage. Not so much because we're totally unable to help ourselves as humans, but because their approach to teaching the young this is the same as the abstinence-only ed detailed above, this has mixed results.

Work: Your mileage may vary, but that's not unrealistic.

Social media: the people in high school and college also use social media, and the most maladjusted people have the loudest voices.

Dating: Oh boy.

I've gone on a whole spiel about this in another thread, but the long and short of it is that we don't know what meaningful love is anymore. For many, love is no more than a throbbing feeling in the chest, groin, or both. Sex in western society, as it stands, is overglorified mutual masturbation in practice. The various methods of birth control that we now have further enable the trivialization of the only act man can do to reproduce. Meanwhile, sex (not reproduction, sex) has been exalted as a rite of passage for men and women alike-- it's gotten to the point that we see men ideologically neutering themselves in a feverish attempt to become more viable for female attention, because they figure that feminist ideals are what women are into (success is mixed, as this transmogrification causes them to become people that would regardless be largely unattractive to women). Boomers, and society at large have taught their children shallow and bastardized ideas about love that suffer from not being grounded in reality, and men and women alike also largely suffer from not knowing how to be lovable people-- meanwhile, we've done away with established subcultural spheres that would have assisted in teaching men how to be men and women how to be women (this is part of why we've seen various MGTOW/PUA/incel discussion boards-- it's an inferior replacement for that, inferior because the social venues lack the warmth of in person interaction, and also because the behaviors and attitudes being passed down and encouraged are various levels of maladaptive).

We also increasingly infantilize our men and women, but especially our women. More freedoms for women are good, but co-requisite responsibility isn't consistently (if ever) paired with these conferrals.

I think constantly putting off the prospect of marriage and children in the high valuation of their career is a major factor as well, but I think you're extremely overblowing the role of social media in this.
