Is "get woke, go broke" an actual phenomenon?

You can have diverse stories and not go Woke. Plenty of stories in the 90s and 2000s had diverse casts who didnt hold it as the singular virtue of the product.

I think a lot of the woke shit these days is more of a deflection and a shield than a genuine call for dialogue about representation. The people that run marketing, know that if they say the right phrases, their multi-million endeavour will have the undying support of thousands of gullible twitterati, who get high on enforcing social norms. Sometimes these same ideologues wind up in the production themselves, and that's when you see the bizarre chauvinism in movies, where they try to rub the audience's face with diversity, but are too inept to actually cater to what the franchise was initially about-- take your pick of examples here.
When you frame your job as a culture warrior against intolerance, suddenly you being downright terrible incompetent is tolerated a little bit longer. I think it's more self-interest than others may think because if pushing Wokeness was just raw ideology, then at some point I'd expect the less capable to step aside and allow quality artists to make content people could enjoy rather than actively repulsing the general public. Rian Johnson springs to mind here, but him and others routinely cling to power tight as they can, so from that angle it's hard to see this all as a conspiratorial agenda by the Powers That Be

Battlefield V, 2016 Ghost Buster's and perhaps the biggest flop of them all, a Wrinkle In Time.

A Wrinkle In Time was a massive flop because of the sheer cost of the film and it's wholly Ava DuVernay's fault due to her uncanny ability to not understand the source material. It isn't a book about blame whitey feminism. Also her inexplicably stripping all Christian references from the story which basically makes it impossible to film the other books and have them make sense.

I'd also add the Chevy Volt, which was the $2 billion dollar car the Obama admin wanted GM to build but nobody actually wanted to buy.

It doesn't matter because the primary agenda isn't usually making money anyway.

Proctor and Gamble owners of Gilette who made that god awful "Men Suck and Do Better" video followed up by "My Trans Daughter shaves too!" video.

Both shaved BILLIONS off P&G's balance sheet and had some spokesdude out of NZ (in order to bury the lead) say "This was the wrong track to align our customers needs and base" because every middle American man AND woman said "No, fuck that I'm not buying Gillette AND not buying other stuff by P&G". Gillette's woke stance to talk about politics and feelings instead of...fucking selling razors to people caused an uptick in competitors brands who kept on point with the message "you are a man, we like you, you buy our product, buy more please?" Harry's, Dollar Shave Club, and other brands took off like gangbusters.

You know what videos are made by Gillette now? White army dudes getting home from war hugging their kids and the wife saying "Smooth skin honey!"

So yes, normal people don't want to see Identity Politics, Social Justice Liberalism, and Fringe Progressive messages in their ads for shit they shave their body with.
🤣 They're wasting more money to protect their brand by building up the likes and positive comments with bots. 🤣

That Gillette ad is so fucking creepy, it just emanates evil.

"Get woke, go broke" is a bad take because it believes the very intention of a company, especially if they lead an industry, going woke is solely done for profits. Companies are as likely to be shaped by the surrounding culture as they are to be in a position to shape the culture itself, and while profits are vital, advertising via identity politics is not necessarily done to make money, although monetizing the journey is important. Indeed, some companies can afford the loss going woke provided they don't proverbially lose their shirts. It's about forging a new generation of consumers because the old ones are eventually going to die off.

An outstanding example is Chips Ahoy's 2019 Mother's Day tweet targeting "Stan Twitter" which overlaps heavily with the Drag and LGBT community:

At first glance, you're likely wondering why a cookie company would be openly advertising to drag queens on Mother's Day, but lots of the LGBT community spends money disproportionate to their numbers especially on frivolities like this, and they're usually friends with women who generally spend more than straight white men. Noticing a pattern here?

Of course, lots of openly LGBT people perceive such acts of corporate pandering as cynical attempts to court their patronage with such sentiments quaintly expressed in memes like this, but in my opinion, it's done entirely out of the realization they are part of the mainstream and thus no longer special:

Let me put this in perspective since you and most people here are very autistic.

You remember how since the early 70s Christian versions of everything started popping out in America? Music, even heavy metal, movies, politics (I'm talking about entertainment and media, not just culture or tradition) and how the media, ads included sticked to those "values" hard to avoid controversy, even tho it was all clearly liquified hot diarrhea and nobody liked it?

Well that's wokeness now, it's also shit and companies are losing money and customers unknowingly because of it, no, billionare companies are not going to go bankrupt because some few angry neckbeards cry about it on YouTube but they are actually losing shekels nice and slowly, which is great!

Let's do a happy little experiment, go and Google "get woke go broke" to see all the articles and pieces debunking it, read them and then realize which websites you're reading them from.

Now research (for just 2 minutes) why "Learn to code" is so outrageously offensive.

Now keep the shit eating grin up.

I think that we can actually see "get woke, go broke" more in line with what people expect by seeing individual cases rather than corporations since corporations cannot fuck it up enough to actually go broke.
Allow me an easy yet shameless example. Quinton Reviews, I know, I'm the definition of an a-log. His channel skyrocketed to over 300k subs around early 2017 by becoming "youtube friends" with several people that today are pillars of the site like Internet Historian and Nerd City, even went to the Sardonicast. He then started watching Hbomberguy and Contrapoints, read CTH and became a meme shitting on Da Trump and Jonathan Tron. His channel has stagnated, constantly complains about money issues and has the bad habit of getting on controversies every month.
This year has been calm, why? He learned to shut up on his channel and reserve most of the spergery for Twitter where it belongs. Guess you could include people like The Cosmonaut Variety Hour and Anthony Fantano to be weird mix of people that decided to commit professional suicide to show how smart they are. It's even funnier when most of them are avid consoomers that don't know anything but to throw smug jabs at an imaginary enemy.

I know Fantano is very left leaning but how exactly he commited professional suicide? Unlike the other examples I can regularly watch his content without rolling my eyes back.

Just to add: people have differing definitions of 'woke', and it's a very small minority of people who think 'woke' = 'black people and women being in things'. More generally 'woke' means 'aggressively pushing a progressive agenda above all else'. Get woke, go broke' isn't 100% accurate but it gets the message across better than the left-wing version of the meme would.

In the case of Star Wars, the vast majority of people who had a problem with Rey didn't have it because she was a woman, they had it because, it seems that since she was a woman, the people behind the movies wouldn't allow her to have any flaws or not be the best at anything. I haven't seen anyone complain that Finn was in the movies, though I have seen a great deal of complaining that he was set up well in the first one and then he was completely wasted, becoming sidelined for the Mary Sue.

But companies that push an ideology first and a product second - not even a lifestyle, but a set of firm political beliefs - inevitably make less money than expected. And in some cases, it seems, using movie examples, there's a sense that they use woke marketing and press when they're worried about the quality of their product. So they draw more attention through controversy and hope that this time, that woke audience from Twitter that these corporations spend too much time listening to, will actually suddenly become large enough to cover their product's shortfalls. 2016 Ghostbusters, Birds of Prey and the most recent Charlie's Angels all tried that angle, because none of them were good enough to get in an audience ordinarily.

Because another aspect of 'get woke, go broke' is that by specifically appealing to one group of people while actively telling other people that 'this is not for you, go away' doesn't work as a strategy in general, but especially when the group you are appealing to is a) a very small percentage of the population, b) never satisfied, c) feel entitled to the product without payment, and d) are loud mostly because of anger and spite - and nobody does something like go to the cinema and watch a film for over two hours out of spite. People won't buy out of spite, but very rarely will.

Yeah you are right, mostly. He isn't on the same league as the other wackos but as long as you don't see his Twitter sperg outs you are fine. His core content is still enjoyable.

Human beings don't like to be manipulated. The only thing they like less is being manipulated badly. So when you have companies proudly invoking shit like...

actual qualtrics motto.png

... the public immediately realizes they are being treated like cattle and rebel. It's not so much the woke shit itself that turns people off, it's the realization that they are being fed garbage by entities that don't respect them nor have their best interests in mind.

After a certain size, not really to be honest. Some big name thing that go too overboard do flop, but most corporations have basically deep pockets that can affort the occasional flex.
If we look at smaller scale businesses then sure, your comic books and indie game will suffer a lot if they decide to hate on the audience.

Also we need to define Woke, things accelerated very fast in the last 20 years.

Most people just pick off stuff from the shelf, they don't even read what is on the box. I mean it would be cool if the citizen body actually gave a fuck and lived their lives mindfully but I don't see that happening. Especially when the current society is set up for all the smarter ish people to be funneled to be fanboys then drones of brands and their hobbies.

I'd argue in modern times it's become more sensationalized. These people always existed in my opinion but they were much easier to shun out due to a lack of a proper platform. With the rise of social media, as many of these people sharing similar ideologies come together to form groups. These groups can appear to be the loudest, but are usually the smallest. Anti-vaxxers, Flat-Earthers, etc. These concepts have existed for a long time. Some more than others, but with social media, these people's worldviews are giving an equal platform as everyone else. And as a result, you see more it.

There were definitely more PC groups that existed years ago. The only difference is that there wasn't really an easy way to conglomerate. You would have to actively search for these people in order to have that understanding be acknowledged, but the benefits of this is that sometimes that ideology would die out over time with no one validating it OR it just died with the person themselves.

"Get woke, go broke" is very interesting because people tend to think of woke as "well SJWs obviously!" but I feel it encompasses more of the issues with social media itself. Everyone is given an equal platform in a sense that you can make an account and tailor it to your needs. Now you can find plenty of other "woke" folks to share your ideologies with all at the push of a button. It's much easier to feel validation from your beliefs when 100's of other people share the same belief I do so it must be true, right? I personally see it as a way of people trying to form connections in a way they couldn't really do years before, but at what cost exactly?

Short answer: A lot. Long answer: Companies obviously noticed these people and sometimes give them a platform themselves. Some of them might agree with them within those circles. (It's much easier to hire people you know or will always agree with (to manipulate).) It's very easy for people of similar experiences to group together with social media. HOWEVER, I think the BIG THING is that it's usually for money. Obviously we can tell it's not working in most cases, but many of these companies are willing to "crack" a code to get this audiences's money. And hey, if they can do that while looking PC, they get good PR too. Plenty of gullible people are willing to take most companies at their word. If you can give a mediocre project, save the most money, and still look good in the public eye, it's all good. The problem is...reality isn't like that.

Normal people are more concerned with themselves than needing to align with ideologies. Don't get me wrong, we all have our values that we learn over time or adapt from our environments. These can be good or bad. However, most normal people aren't the ones screaming on twitter about needing a movie to be a certain way or else it's _phobic. Those people are complainers who will never be satisfied. You can never be "woke" enough because there was never a goal to begin with. They will never spend money because they have contempt for concept of even getting a solution to begin with. You could give them everything they want and they will still NEVER pay for it. Because even they know that it's not that important.

The notion of "get woke, go broke" fails because it satisfies no one other than complainers who will never be fans, buy products, or even support these corporations. AND YET, this is still presented to normal people as something to be accepted when many normal people don't care. Many super fans of anime/manga/tv or whatever fandom won't accept it either because many of those people on a surface level, only came for what they asked for. You won't see weebs complaining about their kawaii waifu anime shows needing _characters to be good or else it's _phobic. Why? Because the story and characters fulfill a purpose that satisfy that niche. No one really expects anything else from that and you learn to enjoy it or you don't. No normal anime fan cares if characters like Goku are black or not (which is funny considering how many black people like DBZ, it's become it's own subgenre) because it was never important. The cool action scenes and character writing was more than enough to be entertaining/enjoyable. The purpose of entertainment was fulfilled and now companies/artists/authors/storytellers make money from it.

"Get woke go broke" COMPLETELY IGNORES the concept of supply/demand. You are not providing an audience anything substantial with your bland rip-off movie about a group of _minorities going into space. It has been done before AND BETTER. You have competition and it's fierce. Woke media makes this mistake all the time. Companies assume they're the first when in reality, they're dead last. Their idea is tired and when you do nothing with it, no one will remember it. You won't get any of that attention, even with normies because it's not worth looking into. People just want entertainment and you can't have that with wokeness being the main point and everything else afterwards.

Characters being race-swapped not out of telling an interesting story, but for PC-ness makes it feel less like a interesting idea and more of needing to have tokens to satisfy this constantly complaining crowd and look good in the public eye. And for what? People who don't buy anything? People who aren't even interested in anything you make other than on a superficial level? How many race swaps have we seen that almost never get heard of again or fall into obscurity? How many "woke" initiatives silently get pushed out when companies realize the can't make a good buck? Quite a few. These companies that aren't fully woke clearly don't care, but they're also so desperate to cash in on the movement it makes me wonder if they think it's even a worthy investment to begin with or if they're just scared of a potential backlash.

TL;DR Woke media can sell (with good writing, characters, etc), but wokeness itself can't. Because not everyone is woke or even wants to be. Companies don't realize this and try to sell the concept of wokeness to normies which drives them away and brings no satisfaction to the initial complainers. No one wins, but people try to crack to code to make money.

No. Go woke, go broke isn't a real phenomenon.

After all, the people that want to push these ideas can never go broke. They can never run out of money, only you.

The DSP's of the world have an infinite supply of money you owe them and then spend it to desensitize you to ideas. You think you're being kind and understanding and finding middleground when you say "okay it's just the transtrenders that are annoying, the legit transgenders are alright". And it makes sense. You want to offer a carrot and stick to tranny's to behave somewhat humanely, as you want for everyone else. You want to appeal to them politically, sell them products besides just hormones.

But in the meantime it is another retreat, another battleline that's moved miles ahead for the woke agenda. It doesn't matter if you lose 9/10 battles when your supply is infinite.

ButI yes, for anyone else, go woke is go broke. If you can go broke, you will.

Not if they're making products that cater to angry neckbeards. Anime and games have a long tradition of piracy and the circles in general tend to be suspicious of cliques that threaten the integrity of their particular autism.

Don't pretend there's not a legion of reddit users who ask for boycott and 4 minutes later are the first ones consooming the product.

Don't pretend there's not a legion of reddit users who ask for boycott and 4 minutes later are the first ones consooming the product.

That's pretty much the case with every social movement.

All these right wing spergs saying "we need to punish China" and yet they can't do the basic task of not buying Chinese products.

Most consumers who rack up debts can't stop consoomin. However, with niche hobbies and communities that organize you need to be wary. Going woke directly affected the quality of comics and absolutely alienates people who play games. These communities have the organization and desire to fight a boycott.

However, the consumer is replaceable. Companies usually get woke just as they're getting big. Warhammer is getting bigger than ever and their practice of hiring Californians has made them woke. Blizzard is getting woke but they have the Chinese audience.
