Dobson accidentally makes a great point about his art. We can nitpick his anatomy or his shading technique all we want, but in the end everything he draws suffers from Chronic Who-Gives-A-Shit Syndrome.
Take Sergio Aragones as a counter-example. If he understands anatomy, it doesn't really show up in his most famous work. But the work is funny, it shows a clear grasp of wordless storytelling, and it's instantly recognizable as his. You see it, and you give a shit. Nobody's going to mistake one of his drawings for something by, say, Chris Ware or Lynda Barry (both distinctive artists in their own right, and as different from one another as they are from Aragones).
Meanwhile, what makes Dobson's art distinctive? Aside from the wrinkled bear, not much. His characters all look like the narrator of an overly cutesy "Learn Cartooning!" book with no credited author. Even the basic premise of Alex Ze Pirate reads like someone set out to make the most formulaic webcomic possible. "Ok, there's a protagonist, a wacky sidekick, a wet blanket character, and a cute critter who's - get this! - actually insane and does non-cute stuff! And they're pirates, because people still like Talk Like a Pirate Day, right?" His art is just one drop in the endless flood churned out by the Generic Fanart Machine - the stuff we all see every day without once wondering who the original artist is.
That's the closest thing to a compliment I can give him: his work blends in and gets lost among all the 16-year-olds with their first tablets.

I know I was thinking of using this analogy a while ago in regards to Dobson's art, but I'm pretty sure I held back for some reason. Now however, it fits perfectly.
Dobson's art is the equivalent to a prefabricated home. Like, when you go into the suburbs and you drive down a road and EVERY SINGLE HOUSE looks exactly alike structurally? It's exactly like that. they look nice by passing glance, but then you stop to really notice the details. You notice the siding is shit, the water faucets wobble in their sockets, the carpeting is placed poorly, so on. Just so many imperfections, minor in their own, but cumulatively, it's just reflects sloppy work on the constructor's part.
This is Dobson's art. He doesn't care about improving or having any real say in anything. He's not interested in thinking outside the box or trying to improve on his profession. He just wants to make something that looks "pleasant" and expects everything to just fall in love with his slipshod work.

Just when you think he's made his most insipid, most inane, most ridiculous claim, he shits out such a turd.
Just... why? It's such a whiny, pathetic comment that reeks of unprofessional behaviour. Well done Dobson, seldom have I seen someone so profoundly capable of shooting himself in the foot at such a high rate of fire with such stunning accuracy.
It seems there's only 3 modes he currently operates in:
Either he's playing Wu's lapdog, he writes angry nonsense or he's making "woe is me" posts. Hasn't he realized by now noone's gonna show up to pat his ass?
Maybe people told him to make more art and this is his exceedingly lame way to try and deflect that criticism? "I'm making tons and TONS of art... I -uh- just dont upload it... for some reason, I guess? Yeah, that's it!"
I faintly remember Dobson making a comment about being spread over too many platforms and thus ending up cannibalizing his pageviews or something. I guess having his own server was just too expensive and so he fell back on DA or something, but without ONE DEDICATED DOMAIN he's not gonna cut it. Again: it's almost as if he doesn't want to succeed at what he's allegedly dreaming to do.
Who's gonna bother with the artist that doesn't even have his own website?

I might be being too cynical, but his whole depression woe is me schtick just seems to coincide too much with his move to a crowd funded model… Feels like he's trying to monetise sympathy but doesn't dare go full Coffin mode on it.

You know there's a lot of stuff I don't upload. I look and say "Not worth it" or "messed up too badly" though.
As for how everything doesn't need to be perfect? That's true. I've even taken a look at some pieces I've admired and noticed bits that I'd probably rip apart had I done it.
However when saying that "not everything has to be right" that's generally talking a more stylized approach. Even stuff that doesn't show much clear knowledge of anatomy still needs it. Seen artists that mainly do cartoony things but they've shown in others that they do know what they're doing.
Helps that the imperfections fit in with the rest of it. When you have barely defined blob fingers and ultra-detailed everything else, it will be noticed. When everything else is kinda simplified then it fits. Dobby doesn't go for that though.

I'm reminded yet again about fragile egos. It seems like Dobson seems a wee bit defensive over what he does with his spare time. "How dare you imply I don't read, I read all the time!" Sure you do, Dobson, we all totally believe you.
Also, someone should tell Dobson that what he does on twitter isn't talking to people, its whining at people.
