“Hal” transferred to my university when I was a sophomore. He apparently had a successful basketball season as a Freshman at the nearby junior college he attended. Given his major was in a field the university was known for, he seemed to be a good fit both academically and athletically. Most importantly, he'd give our relatively-new varsity basketball team a legitimate scorer for the next three years as the program continued to be built up. Even better, Hal's brother was finishing his college basketball career playing for a top-level team, so there seemed to be a family pedigree in the sport.
Although the team didn't do as well as hoped during Hal's first season, he proved to be a skilled player and finished as leading scorer. One particular week, he was recognized for scoring the game high total in a loss against a nationally-ranked team. However, Hal had his weaknesses... or chinks in the armor one might say.
In close games, Hal had the habit of ignoring play calls and shooting three-pointers that almost always didn't score. Teams picked up on this and used it to their advantage to turn close games into wins for them and losses for us. He also seemed to pout at the end of the season when he didn't make the first team for our conference. Given another player at his position outscored him in the playoff game where the two of them went head to head, it was a no-brainer that the other person would be recognized ahead of Hal – just not in the latter's mind.
The following year is where things took a turn into the bizarre in revealing Hal's darker side. At this point, he and two teammates were roommates in a house they rented close to campus. One day after practice, said roommates approach coach privately to say Hal had a gun on his bed and made a comment that they interpreted as a threat he might use it against them. Since the house was private property off campus, I believe coach's hands were tied and he couldn't do anything about it based on what school policies were at the time.
After the first few games, however, something disgusted Hal enough he abruptly walked out of practice – earning himself a brief suspension from the team. Hal and I had a Humanities class together and he wanted me to write a midterm paper for him during this time period. I flat out told him I had no time because of my other classes (and my desire not to get expelled for plagiarism).
For better or worse, I missed the the fireworks where the situation reached its boiling point. I was sick the day Hal was supposed to be reinstated from his suspension. That same day, the team had an away game against a very competitive opponent. It turned out Hal was failing the Humanities class and refused to meet with the professor to talk about it. So, Hal was told that he could dress for the road trip, but he was not yet allowed to play because of his poor performance in his Humanities class. From what I heard, Hal had a major meltdown when he was informed in the locker room and claimed that being benched was worse than death. Within a matter of days, he quit the team for good. When a teammate filled me in on what happened, I found myself glad I was sick at home because Hal sounded like the type of person that could have gotten violent had he been angry enough during his meltdown.
Either right before or right after Christmas of that year, Hal apparently decided that he wanted to transfer to another school to continue his playing career. Because he never turned in his away game uniform that he wore the night he had his meltdown, the athletic department placed a hold on his academic record (transcripts). He had to return the uniform or pay its replacement value before his transcripts could be sent to the school he wanted to transfer to. I'm not sure what he did, but he never transferred. Although he seemed to disappear from campus after that, the story continues...
Fast forward approximately five years. I'm now a college grad and helping out at a holiday weekend pro-am basketball tournament an associate was running at the time. As one of the teams takes the court for warm-ups. Hal is out there wearing his former university's away uniform that he claimed was lost. I just shrugged and prayed he wouldn't recognize me. From what I remember, he neither approached nor interacted with me (thank Godbear).
That was the last I had heard from him for an extended period of time apart from unsubstantiated rumors that he might have been dealing drugs. However, there's one last part to the story.
Two years ago, I was attending an alumni function held by my University. One of Hal's old roommates, someone I've stayed in touch with over the years, attended the event as one of the honored guests. I'm not sure how our post-event conversation shifted to Hal, but I was told that Hal was in jail and that I could look up his name on our state's online offender registry to verify it. I was curious enough to do that when I got home. Sure enough, Hal's name was listed. Going back nearly 15 years, Hal's listed convictions ranged from multiple DUIs to felony firearms. His listing further indicated that he was currently serving up to 10 years after a no contest plea to assault with great bodily harm less than murder and a second offense for felony firearms.
Worse, he had used his brother's name as an alias at some point which irritated me. I've interacted with his brother in the past and he was Hal's polar opposite: polite, classy, and successful with his life after playing basketball (with a stint playing professionally overseas). To know Hal had no qualms with giving his brother's name as own to law enforcement wasn't too surprising, but hard to accept

. I also felt bad for the brother who might have to spend the rest of his life dealing with people thinking he committed the crimes that Hal committed should they run background checks on the former.
A quick check as I composed this shows Hal was released from jail back at the end 2018, a few months after I originally looked him up in the offender registry. I have no idea what he's doing now. I'd just as soon forget about him and hope I never see him again because of his violent tendencies.
