Kris, Robin, and Corrin aren't silent protagonists though. They talk a lot.Eh, the FE fandom has ALWAYS been like that; even from before there were any silent protagonists a la Kris, Robin, Corrin and now Byleth. I got into FE many years ago and the Blazing Blade fans would tear each other apart over who was the best waifu for Eliwood or Hector, or the best husbando for Lyndis.

My mistake on that one, oops. But otoh they're protagonists supposed to be more or less audience surrogates like in visual novels (not all of them being dating sims), so there's always a bit of a self-insertion deal with them (and Byleth) and it can't be helped because that's how things work. :/a
The utter buttfury coming from the detractors is hilarious as fuck, though. I remember people wailing because Avatar Characters in FE are "SUCH SELF-INSERTS, WAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!", then turning around to whine that Byleth "has no personality" aka "s/he's NOT ENOUGH OF A SELF-INSERT, WAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!".
As a bonus, the Bleach fandom is still stupid AF. Noriaki "Tite" Kubo makes a cute "Stay at home" doodle including Ichigo and his son with Orihime, Kazui, and the IchiRuki titbabes go WILD.

Tatsuki/Orihime is actually a cute alternative to IchiHime, if you ask me, and so are Rukia/Orihime and Riruka/Orihime. Seeing the Tumblrettes latch on genuinely cute ships because OMG LESBIAN FETISH UWU UWU is pretty disappointing.

Some of my personal experiences with shippingtards
Pokemon shippers have their "nevermet" cult where they go insane masturbating to imaginary relationships between characters that had nothing to do with each other. I would see obnoxious "big name on the forum" users at Serebii with long signatures full of cutesy fanart claiming "official shipper of so and so"... for example two gym leaders from TWO DIFFERENT GENERATIONS, a forgotten character of the day with a recurring character of a different story arc, anime characters with manga characters, etc. Ash/Gary cultists are the oldest holdout of Alphabet shippers and they were already calling everyone else Literally Hitler homophobes since the early 00s. Ash/Serena cultists completely miss the joke that it was supposed to be one-sided because Ash is a fucking kid, and when they say "they kissed" it's also the same lunacy, the joke is that the kiss is implied and Ash didn't even register he got a smooch because again, he is a fucking kid.
The normie spergs: Ash/Misty is so normie but still deranged. Just waltz through any casual "nostalgia chillposting" topic about Pokemon and you'll start seeing normies regressing back to spergling rage "BACK IN MY DAY IT WAS ASH AND MISTY!" or the trying-to-sound-cool "guys i totes didn't watch back then, so did ash ever do misty?" And whenever the show has a cast change they start whining "i totes don't watch anymore but ASH AND MISTY FOREVAR". It comes combined with the "ash never grew up" meme, as if in 20 years they still haven't realized it's like the Simpsons - they keep repeating Ash should be X years old by now and should go back home to marry Misty.
And just point to them that most "hints" they sperg about were a fabrication of the dub and the original version just had less than five minor gags every now and then that the writers never intended to be anything more because once again, Ash is a fucking kid, and they will explode in autistic denial and rage. Noooo, the "hints" are TRUE and HONEST and OFFICIAL and CANON...
With Digimon is kinda similar in the sense that Tai/Sora and Mimi/Joe were fabrications of the dub, but tell people that and they will explode. For all they idolize Japan, they selectively disregard the creators of their animu.
And the worst thing? These people are supposedly normies, or former watchers that now resemble functioning members of society. Just trigger them and they'll turn into the proto-Tumblrinas they were back then, they just sprinkle a bit of "we were the cool kids" rhetoric on it.

Lol the crackshipping is really huge in the Pokémon fandom. It's one thing for being such a fictional "what-if" that can make for some interesting takes in fan fiction, but it's another to be such a proud shipper of it. The Ash shippers are bad about this, Ash gets shipped with every Pokémon girl, even the ones who've never been in the main anime, and then they get super protective of it. There's an Ash/Hilda fangirl on there who once admitted (before editing her post when she got called out for it) she left reviews on fanfics harassing the writers for not writing a fic about the two or some other rare ship she also supports despite them also being a fan of the ship, too.
They also forget that was I believe the third chick to kiss him (although it happened off-screen lel), but they like shrieking about this one because it's "TOTES CANON" and the other two happened in "non-canon" movies.
Good times lol. 4KIDS was really adamant about making this pair a "thing", too, for some strange reason. At least with Jessie and James, it's all but explicitly stated that they might actually be a thing (it was at least true for an officially-licensed manga, "Electric Tale of Pikachu"), but Ash and Misty were more like squabbling siblings at times. But they had such strong chemistry together even in the original that I don't think I can totally blame 4KIDS for this. They emphasized it more for the dub, but it matched up really well with the animation.
I don't think it really helps that Misty really is a bit of a flirt/romantic even in the original, fawning over the idea of boys.
There's supposedly an interview with the Japanese actors of Gabumon and Matt where they were shocked/joked that Tai didn't end up with Sora, and then there's "Our War Game" that teased Tai/Sora even in the original. The chemistry between Matt and Sora was that subtle that not even the people working on the show realized Kakudou wanted them together to subvert the expectation of "hero gets the girl". Fucking Joe had more on-screen time with Sora than Matt did.
Joe/Mimi surprises me, actually, 'cause she spends more time with Izzy than with Joe, although Tri showed that she and Joe do get along pretty well, which was nice.
But yeah, you bring up a good point that it's supposedly normies who bring this up. Think it just goes to show the awesome power of the editing wand and its effect on impressionable young minds.

Honestly, Digimon Adventure didn't have much room for shipping since yet again the whole cast were fucking kids. So they could get away with making Sora having a thing for Matt really subtle and irrelevant, you know, as things are when you are 10 years old. It was in 02 where they started actually writing for it.
I really get miffed when they do the ship thing with KID CHARACTERS, or take too seriously a "toy ship" joke. It's like ruining the innocence of a kid cartoon. It's why I can't stand CLAMP with the reverse gay pedo shipping already embedded by the writers.

Personally I don't mind kid shipping as I see shipping as just theorizing who would make good, bad, intresting, fun or cute couple. I don't think it matters what ages the characters are for that. Even if those characters are too young in this point in canon that wouldn't close off future possibilities. Plus they are fictional and fictional kids tend behave way more mature than actual kids of that age so more mature subjects about them don't really bother me.
I doesn't think the problem is shipping kiddos or shipping otherwise anyway. No, the problem is how seriously some fans take it and how annoying they are about their OTPs. This just tends get highlighted in kiddy series where romance just feels out of place. Twilight shipping wars were cringy as hell but when the series is mostly about romance and love triangles, you can't really say that shipping arguments are missing the point.

Dammit, Kiki and Tombo's friendship was one of the cutest parts of the film. And ffs, she's thirteen, god forbid a girl that age possibly like a boy and be a little tsundere for him.
