Culture Patreon’s Ban on “Anime” Art - War on Anime Intensifies

Patreon Is Being Asked to Ban Child Rape Animators — 37,000+ Have Signed the Petition

Anime content is being banned on Patreon now too, allegedly..

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Patreon's coming for everyone now.

Where should Patreon draw the line?
Patreon is a great platform for creators, especially those with strong, loyal fanbases that want to directly support artists. Musician Jack Conte and developer Sam Yam are the founders of Patreon, and the concept was created because creators were getting stiffed by low-paying platforms like YouTube.

But they’re also getting censored, de-monetized, or de-emphasized if they don’t comply with the rules of YouTube, Facebook, or any other platform. Now, Patreon is being asked to issue its own set of policies around certain kinds of content.

Primis Player Placeholder

Patreon’s creators are extremely varied. YouTube videographers, writers, webcomic artists, podcasters, musicians, and many other creative types connect with targeted audiences through Patreon. And the system is simple: the creators can receive funding directly from their fans, or patrons. They can be paid on a recurring basis or per work of art.

The result? Many artists and creators feel that they are able better express themselves and get paid while doing so. In fact, more than a million active users and 50,000 monthly active creators make Patreon a seriously popular solution for artists. At present, Patreon estimates a staggering $150,000,000 is earned by artists on their platform annually.

Sounds great, except some fringe artists are attracting a lot of negative attention. Journalist Vonny Leclerc first discovered something disturbing: a ‘no pornography’ policy by the company wasn’t being enforced. That started the ball rolling.

+ Sorry, You Can’t Fund Your Fetish Porn Site on Patreon Anymore

Patreon has already clamped down on fetish porn site creators, though shocked onlookers are noticing something far more extreme.

Horrific acts of child rape depicted in animation.
Many of these artists are defending their right to create animations depicting child rape, torture, and other activities. Of course, actually doing these acts is completely illegal, but what about drawing it?

These artists also say they’re creating works for patrons that are demanding it. And it turns out that patrons have been requesting all sorts of pervasive acts from creators. These now include horrific acts of child rape, personalized abuse fantasies, and acts of violence.

Lecler says it’s gone too far. “There are more and more violent, hyper-realistic animations being uploaded all the time,” he shared. “I wondered who had the time, now I can see people are making a living out of creating animated rape and snuff films.”

Lecler says Patreon is not only ignoring these activities, they are encouraging them.

patreon_care2petition.jpg

More than 37,000 thousand people have signed the petition demanding that Patreon stop people from selling child abuse animations through their platform.
The petition has been gaining steam, with more than 10,000 signatures arriving in the past 24 hours. Care2Petitions is hosting this particular protest.

According to the petition, this actually goes way beyond child rape illustrations. It also includes artwork of brutal killings, eye-gouging, other forms of rape… the list goes on. Lecler says one prominent artist is earning over $20,000 a month depicting extreme violence.

Here’s a quick excerpt of the petition page:

This is so many levels of disturbing: that these men can make it without caring, and that others buy it. Patreon is helping facilitate the creation of personalised abuse fantasies. One person [I found] is making $20,000 plus a month making adult games. Many making serious bucks.

What does it tell us about society, about sex and capitalism, that the most lucrative animation careers can come from made-to-order pornography? If you want to understand the things men wish they could do to us, look at the porn they create when they don’t have to use real women.

Patreon is being used to fund realistic animations of rape, eye-gouging, torture. Home-invasion when young women are shot in the face and then raped. @Patreon know about this. What’s being done? I can find hundreds of accounts making this kind of content.”

So where should Patreon draw the line?
Technically, this artwork isn’t illegal — at least in the United States. A picture depicting extreme violence may be extremely distasteful, but an artist has the right to create it. Once that crosses into depicted child pornography, however, a judge may have to decide.

Another legal counter-argument relates to the actual harm done. If patrons and artists exist in an insular environment, one free of actual crime, it’s possible this group is merely acting out gruesome fantasies without dragging people into them. Some of the artwork in question violates Patreon’s pornography policy, though not all of it does.

+ Less Than 2% of Content Creators on Patreon Earn Monthly Minimum Wage

If that artwork is connected to actual crimes — or worse, if it’s depicting real events — then there’s a much different level of enforcement that’s needed.

Now, Patreon is undoubtedly going to be forced to respond — and make tough decisions that balance the broader interests of the community.

More as this develops.

Problem is that they might be banning all anime artwork, not just the porn.

That means even normal PG rated stuff like Sailor Moon, Naruto, or My Hero Academia would be banned solely for the art style it's drawn in. I don't think it's an SJW cabal trying to ban the anime art style though.

Either Patreon is trying to just ban hentai (or maybe even just the more extreme types of hentai like loli or guro) and weren't clear enough in their wording or a major corporation like Disney and Marvel or Warner Brothers and DC are tightening the screws on the payment processors to try and crush any of the potential competition.

It's probably the former and people are jumping the gun, since a total ban on all anime artwork is a really dumb move for Patreon, but I'm not going to entirely rule out the latter idea since I wouldn't put it past The Rat to try and enforce their monopoly now that their MCU gravy train is no longer headed in any clear direction and Disney's finally starting to take some major hits as Iger makes his exit and Corona-chan is literally killing their biggest audience in droves.
Disney and Warner don't give a shit about their comics divisions outside of them being IP farms. Outside of comics American superheroes are slaughtering anime in the West weebs are not a threat to Disney and AT&T's empires.

On topic Anime is just going through what comics went through in the 50s,what board games went through in the 80s and what video games went through in the 90s.

It's a niche hobby that the kids like that isn't approved of by moral crusaders.

Back then it was fundies today it's SJWs.

And just like with the others all this will do is make it more popular because people especially young people hate these kind of cunts.

I really wish Secret Asshole hadn't gone into hiding he was really good at explaining this.

True, I know the comics themselves are an afterthought for Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC while the superhero genre is dominant at the box office, but never underestimate the forces of greed and hubris or even good ol' fashioned stupidity and irrational paranoia when it comes to mega-corporations like Warner Brothers or The Rat.

Right now, the MCU is dominant but they've also kind of hit a wall now that Endgame (AKA the big payoff that most people were tuning in for) is over and done with and their new phase of the MCU franchise isn't really headed anywhere specific, as opposed to the first three phases that were meticulously planned and announced years in advance and finished with Endgame.

Now that the MCU isn't headed anywhere specific and are now scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel with D-List characters even more obscure than Guardians of the Galaxy and utterly loathed characters like America Chavez and now Corona-Chan is throwing Disney a really huge curveball by completely shutting down their biggest market AND their parks and attractions on both sides of the Pacific, I wouldn't be surprised if The Rat is panicking about their MCU gravy train no longer being able to maintain their empire-building efforts and are now panicking enough to start seeing weebs as a potential threat.

Otherwise you are spot on in your assertions and I completely agree with you.

This outrage over anime really is a lot like the previous uproars over comic books, rock music, horror movies, and video games from the previous decades, except the only difference is this time the moral guardians are left-wing anarcho-punks, champagne socialist hipsters, and cat ladies instead of the right-wing fundies, rednecks, and soccer moms of yesteryear.

Why would Warner Brothers want to ban anime art when they own Crunchyroll?

Why would Warner Brothers want to ban anime art when they own Crunchyroll?

Same reason why Disney would, to crush potential competition, albeit from a different angle than The Rat.

They've been investing into Crunchyroll original shows, and if a talented creator were inclined to make their own anime-style original series and it turned out good and was largely self-funded via something like Patreon, it could be a problem for CR, whose most well-known "original anime" is the infamous High Guardian Spice, a woke CalArts take on anime so downright awful, that last I checked, it still has yet to get a proper release and had to be saddled with some Korean shows as part of a wider "CR Originals" branding to even see the light of day.

Of course, this is assuming that the big Western media corporations are panicking and putting the screws on payment processors, and it's not just Patreon trying to appease the Australian, British, or EU censors. Or it's just a typical porn ban that's focusing on hentai (or even just loli) for now and Patreon misworded the announcement making it sound like a blanket anime ban.

The dark irony of it all for me is that ever since Disney raped and murdered Star Wars because they let some SJWs and hacks at the helm, they've shut down a potential avenue of profit and stained their reputation even more through it.

Its starting to look ligitiment that something happening.

Hoooooooooooooly shit, are you fucking kidding me? They're seriously using the "well if they look like a kid, then they're a kid" reason?; really reaching by using that fucking excuse. By making the case that youthful features = gateway to degenerate art, then you may as well ban any other artwork that have people drawing doe-eyed, big-headed humans/animals/robots/etc that only the most fucked-up of mindsets would associate with C H I L D P O R N.

Personal opinion: I don't like questionable subgenres like loli and guro. I think it's disgusting, but so long as you're an adult that knows of said stigma, it stays in the realm of fiction and that the work doesn't contain depictions of real life humans (ie., go eat the barrel of a hot railgun, Shadbase), then go nuts. Just don't look for acceptance among the culture when you decide to openly ree about how you get off to 1,000 year old loli dragon-girls on your personal social media page.

Also lol at Amazon all but banning people who sell SFL (Safe For Life) Hatsune Miku figures. Newsflash kiddos:

Miku isn't fucking real.
Miku is a fictional character.
Miku is software AI (a more humanized AI, but AI nonetheless) for people who want to make music/music videos. So they may as well stop selling the program, too while they're at it because a small minority uses mods or whatever the fuck to make porn.

Wait...does Amazon sell it? Let's check, shall we?:

Hey, why's Amazon selling smut creation software? I think people should look a little deeper on Amazon selling smut creation software.

You know, because anime character design totally, objectively depicts minors.

sincerly I understand if they only go for the most horrifyng and depraved hardcore guro loli shit. But look like they go for all NSFW anime style.. and if it not just nsfw patreon gonna dig their own grave

Are they going to ban SFW anime artwork too? Or is this just targeting the more outre hentai stuff like loli and shota or things that can be misconstrued as such?

If they ban SFW anime artwork, then I think this is SJW-driven astroturfing, likely from the usual suspects (Disney/Marvel, Warner/DC, the CalArts crew) wanting to snuff out any potential anime or manga-style competitors.

At the risk of sounding autistic and dumb, I think a lot of these companies really do fear a second anime boom.

Manga outselling comics was probably an early warning sign despite how small the markets are in that sector

Between COVID-19 wrecking everyone's shit and the capeshit fad more or less primed to finally crash and burn now more than ever for a variety of reasons, and the fact that 2020 is a year of insanity and the most unlikely of things happening, I would not put it past The Rat and the people at Warner to put the brakes on any competitors and just use the smear tactic of "if it's anime-style artwork, it's clearly depicting minors in a sexual way!" regardless of how tame or non-sexual the artwork itself may be or what the artwork is meant to depict.

If it stops at loli and shota, that is understandable. Hell, even if it's a blanket hentai ban, I'd be fine with that so long as they also ban "Western"-style pornographic artwork and NSFW content.

But somehow I get the feeling these rules won't be applied to loli/shota so long as it's drawn in an ugly CalArts Tumblr style or in a Marvel comics-inspired art style, while a clean and completely work-safe drawing will get banned solely because it's drawn in the anime/manga art style.

It's also funny how this thread was dormant for months but then Patreon started actually doing shit around the time the rest of the corporate landscape is going turbo-woke. It's probably just a coincidence, but it still makes me wonder.....

Marvel Comics (not the film branch which is totally separate) and DC consistently lose money and at best bring in pennies. There's a million other stupid things Disney/Warner would do than scream at Patreon to ban competitors in some hairbrained scheme. These people are probably too dumb to come up with a scheme so convoluted, look at the development of Galaxy's Edge for proof of how incompetent they are at making money.

True, but it could be a frog boil thing, especially if AT&T/Warner wants a tightened hold on anime dubs via Crunchyroll (and Toonami to a lesser extent)

Or maybe some dangerhair punk sows and bearded widemouth bugmen at Patreon are pissed that coomers are wasting money on hentai but won't fap to Tumblr "CalArts" gender-blobs even if it's being given out for free.

It's probably the latter. Honestly, I could see Disney and Warner getting involved on the anti-anime crackdown if a second anime boom really gets going outside the manga and comic books sphere or if one of the MCU films bombs at the box office, but I don't think they're at the point where they'd be actively initiating the charge now that I think about it.

On a more serious note, I think that if the SJW culture war shit somehow actually does die out after 2020, then we will probably go back to the pre-2008 divide of "normie pop culture" and "geek pop culture" that only rarely intersected at points (Lord of the Rings, OT Star Wars) since the SJW culture wars more or less torpedo'd geek culture because it became a mainstream fad
